Batman: Arkham Asylum

Kinda sorta, but that's Dini's MO with the Joker. It's pretty much one zany scheme after another. He (Dini) seems to have a great grip with the mythos and with Batman himself, but his Joker seems to lean too much towards cartoonish capers.

Yet, he's make him look like a psyco at the same time. I've see his joker as combination of different types of joker interpretations.

Cool beans,

you deal with Scarecrow more than once,
I'm currently on my third, and most disturbing encounter.

Sweet. The first encounter is very cool. I love the morgue and the creepy voices. (although the battle wasn't that great and was pretty easy)

If later encounters get even more disturbing then I am really looking forward to it.

Love the game so far. Graphiclly I like the Scarecrow first encounter. I got a busy day tomorrow so I don't know if I'll be able to play until Sunday.

The next one actually made me tear up. It's a bit heart wrenching.

Almost to the last boss. I'll try to get most of the riddle's before going. I already have all the Spirit of Arkham and character bio stuff.

Btw, i heard there are multiple endings. Is that true?

Sort of. There is a stinger after the credits. But the viillain that shows up is completely randomized.

As I've said to Venom and I think TOG, this is hands down one of the greatest games, ever. And THE best Batman game, ever.

You see, while I definitely agree that it's the best Batman game ever and the best superhero game ever, I don't think it's as incredible as people are saying.

The game is very, very linear, although it disguises this really well with (admittedly cool) gimmicks (introducing new gadgets halfway through the game, etc) so it doesn't feel like you're just doing the same thing over and over. I find it interesting, and kind of funny, for example, that Batman uses his 'scanner' a few times, in a variety of different ways, to track something down using fingerprints, or vapors or DNA, and so on. The game makes a big deal of pointing out all the little blotches of whatever it is you're tracking down, when they could just as easily have put a big arrow at the top of the screen. It makes more sense from a storytelling point of view (and it's certainly cooler), but the game is still holding your hand and telling you what to do. There's no actual need to be Batman.

Similarly, I find it really annoying that you have to do the missions one-by-one in the order of the story and you can't explore the Asylum and just do whatever the hell you feel like (like in the Spider-Man freeroamers). It takes away from feeling like you're actually Batman and it ends up just feeling like you're taking orders from him.

I will say that they basically got the whole 'stealthy, enemy intimidation' thing right and it's the one part of the game that is completely and utterly satisfying and a huge improvement on attempts at something like this in other Batman games (you could do basically the exact same thing in Batman Begins, only it was all pointed out for you, taking all the fun out of it). This game lets you strategise and think just as Batman would. But seriously...I don't care how insane Amadeus Arkham was...nobody needs that many gargoyles. Again, it takes away from it. There should be other things for him to swing and grapple on to (...there's a fun sentence).

The combat is truly, madly, deeply wonderful and probably the best combat I've ever experienced in a video game. The Bane level was so cool. Not only do you have to fight mother****ing Bane, but then you have to fight, like 8 able-bodied henchmen as well, without a single health power-up for the whole thing! Pure Batman.

The voice-acting is great, if a bit corny sometimes. Conroy gets some great lines ("[How did I keep it a secret?] Come on, it's me." or the way he giggles patronisingly at Harley after she gives away the Joker's location). Hamill gives his best performance ever, I think. If he never played the Joker again, this would be a decent swansong.

I just beat Harley, so I'm about halfway through, I think.

EDIT: I forgot to mention, has anyone been getting the really obscure references to the comics? So far, my favourite is
the mannikin in Clayface's cell; a reference to Preston Payne's "love interest" from 70s comics
.

I got this today and the game is 100% awesome. Yesterday i downloaded joker from psn ready to install but as Pro-ordered game i got bonus code to enter on psn. The villain map/challenge (scarecrow level) = not actually on the psn store till you enter code which is nice.

At the start as opening cut I thought "Ahh the demo" but then everything happened in different order or with extra scenes between them. Nice as it kept it a surprise. Not sure how far I am (most likely not very) but I'm currently at the point where
Gordon dies and batman is all high on what i guess is scarecrow juice

I LOVE just like I did demo the interview recordings. Those are very nice touch and hope to find them all. Also damn riddler  Insulting me each time I find one one of his trophies "oh very good what gave it away was it the bright glowing green question mark?"

Riddler will start getting frustrated the more riddles you solve. He even acuses the player of ''Looking it up on the internet" at one point.

I thought I read somewhere that players can go back after they finish and collect the Riddler trophies they missed. Is that correct or does collecting them over the course of the game somehow impact how the game plays out? (assuming you have finished already)

Yeah, you can finish up the riddles post after beating the last boss if you want.

So I finished thes game last night.

Earlier impressions remain: fantastic game. No question there. In fact, from a gaming perspective, it's nearly perfect (although I do agree that it seems to hold your hand a bit through certain parts). Combat, stealth, and exploration are all masterfully implemented, the island is expansive but not by any means barren (SO much to do and see), and all those Riddler challenges make it so that you actually WANT to backtrack and find everything the game has to offer. Just incredible. Easily among the best action-adventure games I've ever played, right up there with Okami, Metroid Prime, and Ocarina of Time.

However, I hated the ending. Everything up to that point, I was fine with. I'll get on too long a rant if I go off about it, but it felt so out of left field and resulted in the final two boss battles being insipidly uninspired. However, it's far from being enough to sour the whole experience to any degree. An easy 9/10.

Oh, and I got
Bane
in my post-credits dealy.

Meh, I loved the ending. It was fun for a video game.

My only problem was that
the status quo was back to normal by the end of the game. I had heard in advance that there was a really weird ending and that they had to get permission from DC Comics. I assumed that in this 'verse there was going to be some lasting death or something. But no, they just set everything back to normal.

Wouldn't it be cool if while recovering from the Titan chemical, Joker became temporarily sane?

Another thing that annoyed me was that, while going back to look for all of the Riddler's challenges, Batman's glove wasn't charred the way it was in the video, after that balls-to-the-wall awesome explosion-punch he used on Joker-Beast.

Riddler will start getting frustrated the more riddles you solve. He even acuses the player of ''Looking it up on the internet" at one point.

Why do people ever pay for strategy guides?!
