Astonishing X-Men discussion (spoilers)

Re: Astonishing X-Men - series discussion (spoilers)

Your brilliant arguments are failing to sway me either way. Its difficult, but somehow I resist.

LOL....that's my point Caduceus. My arguments do not need to be brilliant. But I guess I should somewhat explain. The reason I even responded to E's post in the first place because Astonishing X-men has been flying off the shelves at the comic book store I go to. When I went in for my weekly rounds, there were some X-fans doing the exact opposite of what E and Hibiki were telling me. Gobbling up Issue #18. What can I say? The irony is almost divine. On top of that, it's the logic of the statement, Not to be a dick, but X-fans are notorious for gobbling up horrible stories just because they like the characters implies. I hope I don't have to explain this part.

One of us isn't understanding the other.

I didn't mean that they aren't buying it in the literal sense (i.e. not purchasing it). I meant they are reading it and not liking it because they prefer crappy stories as long as they cram every crappy character into them.

Of course people are buying it. The sales figures indicate this.

I have no idea what this "irony" is you speak of.

That's why I said "(w)hen I went in for my weekly rounds, there were some X-fans doing the exact opposite of what Eand Hibiki were telling me. Gobbling up Issue #18." I wasn't repeating myself. It was flying off the shelves, but the day I went in, there were some X-fans talking about how much they liked the story in Astonishing X-men hence the irony I saw in your post.

Well, they may have been X-fans, but how devoted were they? Are they like 90's fans that are uber into AoA or are they just getting into it since deadly genensis like me and loving the fact that they split into four teams without having every character show up and putting top writers like Bru and Whedon to make it interesting?

Re: Astonishing X-Men - series discussion (spoilers)

I both love and hate this book.

Love it because Whedon gets the actual "character" of the individual he's writing. Some of the jokes tend to seem dated (as I've said before)...but they work. Love the surprises each issue throws at you.

Hate the fact that it's a better read (storywise) in TPB. Each issue will leave you with the Kitty Konfusion Face........but when you read the story as whole in TPB it makes better sense.

I never thought of that but it's true. I think the cliffhangers or almost on par with the Ultimates cliffhangers.

This is true.

The bi-monthly schedule isn't helping that either.

The bi-monthly schedule isn't helping that either.

That's another thing that hurts this book's single issue format. His books are so character driven that I find myself having to go back and read the previous issue to remember where I'm at with the story before I can read the new issue.

That annoys me. I have enough comics to read as it is......having to go back and read one that I already read just to follow a new issue is an annoyance to me.

With all that said---it'll be sad to see this book end after Whedon ends this next arc. But at least he said it'll go out with a bang. :D

Re: Astonishing X-Men - series discussion (spoilers)

It's been monthly since 16 or 17, now though. But even then, we dont have any issues for Jan. or Feb., so for the new arc, we (at the moment) have to wait 3 months for part 2.

Re: Astonishing X-Men - series discussion (spoilers)

This issue put everything into context for me.

It all made perfect sense.

The X-men are off to break the Breakworld.

Re: Astonishing X-Men - series discussion (spoilers)

I'm waiting for Lockheed to show up on Breakworld and explain what he's been doing with SWORD.

I want to hear Lockheed speak English! I know he's got something to say.

I couldn't answer any of those questions for certain.

I love this book.

The crew is aboard the SWORD ship headed for the Breakworld. We get a few glimpses at the Breakworld and its inhabitants. Ord sends a transmission to let them know he has Colossus on the ship. Their leader decides to meet them half way.

Meanwhile, Emma is unconscious. A telepath examines her and declares there is no trace of Cassandra Nova in her mind. She later wakes up.

Agent Brand reveals that there is a huge missile which can crack the Earth in half hidden in one of the moons of the Breakworld. The first objective is to disable that missile. But before they can, they are attacked by a huge fleet of ships.

Best moment - Brand is talking about how the people of the Breakworld have id'd Colossus as the X-Man who will destroy them. Peter says he's not surprised; he's been planning to destroy the Breakworld since he was a young boy (!)

Everyone looks at him and he says this is why I never make jokes. Heh.

The way Wolverine and Beast talk and bounce dialog off each other - I love it. It reads so natural and fits their characters perfectly.

Re: Astonishing X-Men - series discussion (spoilers)

I found this issue kind of... daft? I don't know what word to use to describe it. I'm not sure if I liked it. It's certainly wasn't bad, but I don't think I cared for it.

I'll still keep reading though because the dialogue is pretty good and the art is great.

Re: Astonishing X-Men - series discussion (spoilers)

Overall, great issue. I loved the Colossus line as well. It'll be interesting to see how they get out of this alive. I'm waiting to Lockheed to show up and explain what he's been doing with SWORD.

Re: Astonishing X-Men - series discussion (spoilers)

this issue was so cinimatic. i really wish whedon was givin the x-movie franchise. he really gets these characters. cassaday's art is so detailed, clean and simple. i really love this book. it makes you wish that they'd cancell all the other x-books because none of them are near this level.
