Astonishing X-Men discussion (spoilers)

Wow...that was heavy.

I'm not even sure I understood the whole thing.

So, basically Cassandra Nova planted a part of her consciousness into Emma waaaay back when Emma turned her into Stuff? And has been plotting to make her move (similar to what she did with Charles) in Emma's mind the entire time?

How was she able to make everyone see things that weren't there?

Kitty said 3 years...how much time has really passed? A couple days or so?

Deep, man. Whoa.

I was kind've hopeing for a reason to pick this up. I've been briefly running through the issues as they come out. And the online reviews are all the same "I don't have a ****in' clue what's going on." This doesn't really help much. I don't think this is the best X-title everyone's making it out to be.

Well, it has a very solid story. I enjoyed the issue very much. It got a little confusing at first but the fact that Colossus is the detroyer of the breakworld and now that Hellfire wasn't really there is making the title just very cool.

Not to be a dick, but X-fans are notorious for gobbling up horrible stories just because they like the characters. This is actually very well-written and uses characters very well instead o just throwing every X-character in the book and coming up with convoluted time travel and crap. This is the anti-X-book.

The best stories are ones that make you think, not ones that retcon 40+ issue runs or feature the X-men playing baseball (I'm talking to you, Chris Claremont).

I hate Claremont. Regardless of how long he was on the comic, he represents everything bad about the x-men. He's the X-mens worst enemy.

i.e. people who like X3

Well, I still haven't taken it all in yet but it just seems like a lot of people are saying it's confusing. Which could be good if it all pays off in the end or could be disappointing if it leads nowhere.

Re: Astonishing X-Men - series discussion (spoilers)

What didn't people understand about it? I thought it was fairly simple. All of the members of the Hellfire Club, including Cassandra Nova, weren't real. Emma used her psychic powers to make people think they were there. Emma drove Cyclops crazy and then attacked the other X-Men and wiped Beast and Wolverine's, so Kitty stuck her in a hole in the ground. The fake Hellfire Club members kept fighting her. Then, Emma made Kitty remember three years that didn't happen, where she had a son who the other X-men imprisoned, so Kitty brought Nova's body out of the box and passed out. While she and Colossus were unconscious, Cassandra told Emma to transfer her (Cassandra's) mind into Kitty's body. However, Cyclops shot the fake Emma to make her disappear, because it wasn't the real Emma, it was a mental projection. After she and Colossus woke up, Kitty went and fetched the real Emma from the hole in the ground.

Cyclops explained that Cassandra planted a piece of herself in Emma's brain, a psychic command that would drive Emma crazy and make her rescue her body. While Cyclops was talking, Emma hallucinated that Cassandra was talking to her and no one else could see her (like Six and Gaius Baltar). Kitty wanted to kill Emma but didn't. While the X-men were talking, Emma started to transfer the mind of Cassandra from the Stuff body to the body of the new student (the one who could project armor around herself). Then Danger and Ord broke in and SWORD beamed them all up to their spaceship. All the X-men definitely got taken, and I think Ord and Danger, but I'm not sure about the Stuff-body and the new student.

I'm kind of shell-shocked from the issue-I can't decide whether I love it or I hate it. I guess I'll have to wait and see where it goes.

Ooooh all right.

And if they're gobbling up this one? Would that make it a horrible story? But seriously, I can see how the story can be confusing but it all made sense in the end. Good storytelling is what you come to expect from Joss Whedon. On a personal note, I would of killed Emma Frost myself if I was Kitty. That woman is evil. Cassandra Nova or not.

Actually I like seeing them play baseball or doing something fun every once in a while. Series like these need such a balance.

MWoF, you should pick up the first trade, "Gifted", sometime. It's the best arc, and then you can decide on whether or not to pick up the rest.

Agreed. I mean, what's wrong with showing them playing baseball once in a while? The last time that was shown was a looooooooooooooooooong time ago and its not like it was a whole issue or an arc.

The first arc was the only good one. Danger was mediocre, and this latest arc isn't very good so far. Its confusing, convoluted, and the writing isn't that good. What made the first arc good was that it was simple and direct... qualities this issue lacks.

Although I have a feeling Whedon will increase the quality between now and issue 24, I just dont think issues 7 through 18 have been very good (with a few exceptions). Still better than every other 616 x-book though.

This feels like Morrison's New X-men, not just because of the characters, it'1s just creepy and awesome.

I thought it was a great issue.

I'm still loving that Kitty remembers last three as they played out in her mind. She's got to carry that with her. Just totally awesome.

The Hellfire Club revealation actually isn't that far out there. When your messing with Cassandra Nova, you have to expect some telepathic twists.

My favorite part had to be Beast and the ball of yarn.
