Anyone Computer Savvy?

My laptop suffers hardly any start up time, it's usually on and ready to go within two minutes.

And I even have it password protected.
Yeah as inclined as I am towards to make fun of Windows Vista, the problems with it --- like many many many Microsoft products --- tend to vary on a case to case basis.

My girlfriend's system boots much better than E's eight minutes, but she has loads of hardware AND software compatibility problems. Hell, she can't even get her podcatcher, Juice, to work with it.

On the other hand, I know many people who don't have any problems with it, and I'm also not surprised that your rather basic needs --- word processing, web surfing and the like --- invite little complications.

I actually have a problem with people who are so inclined to hate Vista just because it's fashionable to do so (and that goes for people who don't even own Macs as well) but my problem with them is that they have absolutely NO inclination to learn anything about their technology.

Consider that the same kind of personalities who own PCs assert that Macs aren't user-friendly just because they don't use the same kind of keyboard shortcuts that Windows does and that they can't right click or what ****ing ever.

I hate people who hate something solely because it's new, different, or doesn't use the same style as another computer does.

Seriously, in a few minutes, most new operating systems are easy to learn. And they all have their advantages and disadvantages.

I don't know how to explain it, but I have trouble operating Vista. My brother bought photoshop for his new photography class and I helped him install it. It kept giving me an error and when i finally got it installed, the next day he was complaining about Steam(for countersrtike source) crashing. My mom was complaining about how all these sites she would go to suddenly needed Java, so i downloaded it for her and the firewall kept blocking it. so i programmed the firewall to allow it, but then it kept shutting java off after every use. same thing with activex controls.

I get the activeX problem on my xp computer as well but only because I have pop ups blocked on medium. That wasn't the case with vista. Now i can't even play movies in Windows media player because my drivers are outdated and when i update, it says i need a mandatory upgrade (im assuming it means vista) in order to play a movie on media player. So now I have to either play them on PowerDVD or on VLC. And Dell! Don't get me started on Dell.

I've to totally agree with you. As much of a PC geek I was in the past, I really badmouthed Macs, until I owned one. What really irritates me most on all sides of the geek battle royale, is the irrational hate. Whether it be Windows, OSX, BSD, or some flavur of *nix, it's impossible to make everyone happy. So find what you like, use it and shut the **** up.

The issues I have with Vista is that in many instances you, as a user, are completely locked out from configuring your own computer. Microsoft has made some changes so it would be "safer" for the every-day user but for the more advanced user you are completely in the hands of how Microsoft thinks your computer should act.

Other than that I just have the same problem as I did with XP when it was first released; security-, crashing- and compatibility issues. This will be fixed with every update and new release of software but for now it, still, sucks.

I think the software and hardware industry has a lot of issues it needs to address, I just think that there are too many people who are unwilling to meet them halfway or conclude that any quirk or aspect of design that could be considered 'unfriendly' is automatically the industry's fault, simply because the industry has been at fault so many times, that they therefore must be at fault ALL the time.

So... my brother is working for a wine importing business and he just asked me this:
Basically, I'm looking for software that can not only send out emails to 9000 club members (NOT spam) and bypass anti-spam filters and firewalls, but can also give me metrics on web bugs, click-throughs, return and read receipts, etc.
Anybody have any suggestions?

He says he has looked into Arial Software's Campaign Enterprise and Email Marketing Director, Eloqua and Salesforce.com but can't really determine which is best.

I'm currently using Windows XP on a laptop that my Dad passed down to me after purchasing a better model.

I used to know how to do this but: How does one reset the file display to show extensions? I have a lot of PDF files from work that aren't named PDF and also don't register as PDFs, so I have to keep clicking "Open With" to view them.

Tools->Folder Options->Hide extensions for known file types (uncheck this)

So I'm having some issues here that if anyone can help me with I'd really appritiate it. I'm only getting about 30 seconds of usable time out of my computer at a time. Then it freezes up for 2+ minutes. My anti-virus (AVG) isn't picking anything up. I think it might just be age. the computers is about 8 years old now...

Still, any ideas?

So last night I recieved a message on my laptop which stated "SMART Event as occurred on hard drive st1920823as. This is a Seagate 120 Gb 5400 rpm hard drive. I read a little about what a smart event is, and apparently it details an internal problem in the hard drive, but it said nothing about what exactly that error was. Everything seems to be working properly after the boot up. Should I send it in on warranty to get fixed or is there anything I can do to fix it myself?

The first thing I would do before any of that would be to make sure I am keeping regular backups of everything on that drive...

This can mean anything from trouble with your OS to serious hardware problem.

Does you computer work in the time it's "locked up"?
A common problem with computers that freeze temporarily is that it is over-heating. Just a hint. It could be memory problems or other hardware that needs replacing too.

As E said; back up your important data from that hard-drive just in-case there are something serious.

A SMART Event can mean anything. It could mean that the hard-drive just started spinning when it wasn't suppose to or it could be much more serious. All in all the problem means that the hard-drive did something that was not expected.
I would recommend that you try to find some diagnostic program for your hard-drive (you can most likely find it on the manufactures homepage) and run it. You should get a more detailed explanation if there are something wrong with it, and if it is I recommend you send it in AFTER you back up your data.

If I have a laptop that runs on an adapter whose output voltage is 18.5V and 3.5A - volts and ampieres I'm assuming - does that mean I can charge it with another charger that has an identical setting?

Additionally, is it possible to charge it with say 15V?

Here's kind of a weird one: Since I upgraded to the most recent MSN, almost everytime I change my display picture, within a few minutes my internet disconnects. Not just my MSN, my entire internet connection. Then it reconnects within ten seconds or so, MSN signs back in, it's fine for a minute or less, then it happens all over again, and again and again until I sign out of MSN and leave it like that. Sometimes this goes on for a day or two until it spontaneously stops...... until the next time I change my display picture.

What the **** is going on and how do I stop it? And answering with "get Skype" will receive you a good ol' fashioned beating.

It shouldn't be a problem with the display picture, as I've never heard of something like that happening before.

My limited internet knowledge thinks it may have something to do with your router or firewall.
