Honestly, any modern LCD TV can connect to any PC or Mac.

If you get a new/refurbished PC, check and see if it has an RCA connection on the video card.

Cool thanks. Is there any difference in quality between the two?

yes, if your TV has a DVI connection, then it's like any other computer monitor of its size (being 720 or 1080i)

if you use the RCA cable, you're getting a lower resolution.

BTW, if you're connecting a PC/Mac to a standard resolution TV, it's going to look like hot buttered ***.

Ah , Thank you. Yeah was looking at lcd monitor and a lcd tv the same size and thought "I wonder if the tv would be better" I think i'll play it safe and get the monitor

I just had an epic battle with Antivirus 2009. That'll teach you for trying to corrupt my computer.

This can mean anything from trouble with your OS to serious hardware problem.

Does you computer work in the time it's "locked up"?
A common problem with computers that freeze temporarily is that it is over-heating. Just a hint. It could be memory problems or other hardware that needs replacing too.

Pretty sure its major hardware failure since I've got a roughly 1 in 3 chance of it detecting the hard drive on startup.

We're running out of disk space.

We've got about 700 MB left and I've done everything I can do to delete all the programs and files that we don't need, but it's not enough. I've recently come to terms with the fact that it's my music downloading that's causing the trouble: half of our computers 30 gig disk space is my music. And I'm certainly not deleting any of that.

So I've been reading up on external hard drives and it looks like a good solution. What I'm wondering is, what should I be looking for and what kind of experiences have people had with external hard drives?

I know E's digital music collection is gargantuan so I imagine he has some experience with this kind of thing...

Currently, my digital music collection sits at about 30 gigs. That 30 gigs is on one of my two external hard drives. As far as playback in itunes, I havent experienced any slowdown or bad sound quality. I have never had a bad experience with an external hard drive, although I've had quite a few with internal hard disks. Its an excellent solution to your problem Moonmaster.

That's why my brother had bought an External Hard Drive. It was like 500GB's or something like that for something around $100 or so.

I keep my entire 210+GB music library on a 320 GB external drive, and that is backed up at least weekly onto a 1 TB drive. External drives are definitely the way to go if you're out of space. You could get another internal drive if you want to hassle with installing it (it's not hard, it's just a whole thing to open the case up and put it in, assuming your computer is in a regular tower).

I like the portability of the external drive. Mine is a Western Digital MyBook that connects via Firewire 400 or USB. You can get a 250 GB MyBook for under $100 on Amazon.

My advice - stay away from the smaller USB powered "portable" drives (Western Digital makes one called the Passport I believe). They are sllllooooooooooooow, exponentially so as you put more data on them.

Okay, so my laptop shows a red shield with an "X" in the notification area telling me my automatic update option is off. When ever I try to turn it on to recommended it either doesn't register or gives me an error. I've tried three different methods to turn and all fail. First was clicking on the balloon and click a button to turn it on, sometimes it does nothing other times it tells me to go to control panel - Automatic Updates and turn it off there. I did and it failed. I saw on microsoft's website that I had to go to:

Run: services.msc
Clicked automatic updates, switch to enabled and clicked start.

Then got an error message:

Could not start the Automatic Update services on Local Computer

Error 1058: The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it.

I honestly don't know what to do and my school's network will not allow me internet access without the automatic update. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

My automatic updates have problems too. When I go to shut down the computer, it lists "Turn Off and Install Important Updates" or something like that. I did this a couple of times, but the message would always remain. So now I tend to click the "Turn Off Without Installing Important Updates". I tried to manually install them (they seem to be a bunch of Microsoft Office updates) but it said they all failed.

So... is this a big problem or can I just ignore it?

Try this (Random)

1. Control Panel, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Services.
2. Double-click the Windows Update service
3. Click the Log On tab.
4. Verify that the service has not been disabled for the hardware profile that you are using. If it has, click Enable.
5. Click the General tab. Verify that the service has not been disabled in the Startup Type box. If it has, click Automatic to have it start when you start the computer.

It's not a huge problem, a lot of the 'important updates' are kinda rubbish. Some of them can be important though. The MS Office updates are usually security updates that you wouldn't miss as long as your normal security is decent or tweaks that you wouldn't even notice.

My computer is slow.

The Internet, mostly. It's been slow for a while now but it's been getting worse. Now I can barely load a page. It's not the connection, because my iPod works on the same connection and it's fine. (I'm posting from it right now)

It could be that you have many programs running or that your firewall is crap OR you might have spyware on your computer. Have you done a sweep with some anti-spyware program lately?

It's fine. We reset our modem and restarted the computer and suddenly it's as fast as it was before it first started to slow.

Ah, yeah sounds like the buffer/RAM in the modem got overloaded or something like it. 99% of problems with computers can be solved by reseting/restarting it or one of the things connected to it. :D

Nice for you.
