24- The Bauer Power Hour series discussion (spoilers)

As I posted in another thread on the concern when shows will be back, here's the bad news on 24:

Fox's 24 will produce the remaining 16 episodes of its planned season this spring, to avoid losing options on its actors, but the drama won't return till next January.

*Ahem*

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!

More bad news:

No Morew Surnow

"24" co-creator/executive producer Joel Surnow is leaving the Emmy-winning Fox drama.

Surnow's departure is effective immediately. He served as an executive producer on the first eight episodes of the real-time thriller's seventh season that were produced before and into the strike but will not be creatively involved in the remaining 16 episodes, slated to begin filming shortly.

Sucks that Season 7 won't air until next year. I understand the reasons behind it, but still hate it. Oh well, gives me time to read through the rest of the Declassified novels, and rewatch the first six seasons (I went through all six and the videogame in about a month and a half), read the comics, maybe play the video game again before it comes back on the air.

The good news is, since they'll probably start shooting the remaining 16 Season 7 episodes soon, and finish in a few months, the actors, directors, writers, crew, etc that all work on 24 will have some extra time on hand. This could bump up the production of the 24 movie. Supposedly the script is already done, so it wouldn't take long for the project to get underway assuming there are no major setbacks. They could film the movie late this year, or early next year while the Season 7 episodes are airing on TV, for a mid to late 2009 release. Heck, they could even start filming Season 8 next year while Season 7 films, to help ensure filming completion. Who knows?

I doubt this will bump up the movie. If anything it pushes it back. It mentions in the little quote I posted that they're shooting the rest of the season this Spring, likely starting sometime in late March or early April.

They said that the movie is the absolute last thing on their mind until the show is over. I really don't see them starting production and stopping for the next season to shoot and all. They have the script done.

For the show to complete all 24 episodes, it takes about 10 months or so, as officially stated by Sutherland many times. So really no 24 movie until 2011 by this point.

Oh well.

And 10 months to film 24 episodes? Damn. Most shows with similar episode numbers only shoot around 5-8 months a year. Though I guess since Sutherland is Executive Producing the show, he's involved with a lot more than just acting in it, and therefore helps in all aspects of the show, from early on in the process. I guess that 10 month mention makes sense when you factor that in.

At least it would be out before the end of the world

Well I think filming outdoors gets complicated due to sunlight considering the real time aspect. Also Editing this show has to be a *****

So looks like we won't have to wait until early 2009 for new 24 after all! Check it out:

Jack Bauer is making up for lost time.

Fox has confirmed that a two-hour prequel to the upcoming, long-delayed seventh season of 24 is in the works, set to hit the airwaves this fall.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, the prequel will bridge the gap between the sixth and seventh seasons, the latter of which will premiere next January, one year later than originally planned.

The Emmy-winning, clock-ticking Kiefer Sutherland series was the first major casualty of the writers' strike. Only eight of its title-fulfilling 24 episodes were finished when the industry-debilitating work-stoppage took hold.

Rather than air a portion of the season, and face the threat of alienating fans, Fox opted instead to sit on the completed episodes so the season could air in its entirety next year.

It's unclear how the show's trademark gimmick—each one-hour episode takes place in real time—will be altered during the two-hour prequel movie or how far in advance of season seven's start the action will be set.

Its also stated in the report that the cast and crew go back to filming (both the prequel and remaining 16 episodes of Season 7) in April.

Can't wait!

I. need my. fix

Fall 2008 is the only date given for when the Season 7 Prequel movie will air (I assume it'll be in November). Other than that, you're only option for new 24 is the one-shot comic that came out last week, 24 - Cold Warriors, or the Declassified novels they release every few months. Admittedly, both are pale comparisons to the real thing, so I feel your pain, brother. Stay strong, its what Jack would do.

A two-hour prequel? While it's good we're getting something in '08...still, ARGH!!!

Yeah it isnt much. Maybe Jack wont even be in it?

What? You people are actually complaining? Would you rather they NOT do it and just wait until 2009 for Season 7?

Seriously, you guys have to be kidding. This is an attempt by the producers to keep people interested and get them geared up for Season 7. Why is this being looked down on?

Plus, instead of just a 10 minute DVD exclusive or webisode, this one is a 2 hour MOVIE! How is this bad?

And Jack will be in it. Wouldn't be 24 otherwise.

Yeah, I'm still complaining. In all of 2008, we will only get a two-hour special. Something that will come almost a year and a half after season 6 finale, and still 4 months before season 7. Whether we have the special or not, truly- it's not going to make a difference besides letting us know what happened right before the next season starts. And for just a two-hour special, it's almost like nothing.

Like I said, it's good we're getting something, but I'm still pissed of all this time in between seasons and everything. **** the whole "let's show all 24 episodes back-to-back w/o breaks" deal. I'd rather have breaks with the show airing this year than not. But whatever.

I can understand that, but its just a casualty of the writer's strike.

And I agree, it'd be better if they split up the season, but also understand why Fox doesn't want to: they dramatically lose viewers over those extended breaks. By playing all 24 in a run, they retain viewership and keep the ratings up (which is the bottom line from the studio's standpoint).

Still, they're attempting to rectify that by making the extended S7 Prequel. That to me is very good news, and definitly helps ease the wait until next January.

They wouldn't even have to have such a long break. They already had about 8 episodes filmed by the time the strike went down. And they're filming the rest now. They could've easily had done the show with one break, breaking up the season in "two parts", showing 12 eps. before the break and 12 after. It's not like when they first began where they would have breaks every other week or anything like that.
