Your 5 Favorite Films of 2007 -- Update As You Go

I completely agree with all of the praise that Yuma is getting. If I ever compose one of these lists, it will surely be featured as the best movie of the year (thus far).

Yes, yes, yes, and yes. Bale deserves that Oscar like Rosie O'Donnell deserves a punch in the face.
I hope Bale NEVER gets an Oscar.

It's not that he doesn't deserve being recognized as a great performer, he just happens to have a limited range --- one that is very multi-purpose, and he is intensely good at --- and that Oscar would probably just damage his career anyway.

When actors win Oscars, they seem to immediately go and squander all of their respect by appearing in terrible movies. Two of the best recent examples: Halle Berry (Monster's Ball to Catwoman) and Jamie Foxx (Ray to Stealth).

The best you get is that they start appearing dry and predictable.

I mean really, who cares what movies Charlize Theron is in anymore?

Also, I have nothing against him as an actor but WTF to Cuba Gooding, Jr getting an Oscar.

It's strange. I tend to feel like Oscars are NOT a measure of talent, but at the same time, I don't want talented actors to get one either.

I'll get around to a more complete listing later, but I just wanted to say that I just watched Children of Men and thought it was fantastic. Should've known... Clive Owen is probably the greatest actor in the world ever. Yeah, I have a strictly platonic man-crush on him but I have yet to see him in a role where he didn't bring the goods. Closer, Sin City, King Arthur, even in his bit role in Bourne Identity... CLIVE IS THE MAN.

The story was excellent, too, and one need not mention the stellar-as-usual performances from Michael Caine and Julianne Moore.

Children of Men was great.

Michael Caine and Clive Owen are fantastic.

agreed. and Cuaron kicked a** making the thing.

the single steadicam shot at the end that followed him around for like 10 minutes through a freakin' war zone? coordinating that is an unbelievable effort

ok im gonna update mine, and ive seen alot of movies so this will be a long post

Pans labyrinth: (released in canada Jan 2007)
dude, this movie was fricking awesome, i can't beleive this movie was made by the Blade 2 guy 8.5/10

Smoking aces:
this movie was odd, i'm not sure what to make of it, on one hand i couldn't help but think that this story would make a cool comic book, on the other hand the hillbilly nazi's pissed me off 7/10

Ghost rider:
mediocre at best, obviously made by the DD director, to short, Blackheart sucked, Mephisto was lame, Ghosty was too powerful and Nicholas Cage was just about the worst choice imaginable 4/10

The number 23:
I expected this movie to blow, because i can only picture Jim Carrey in one type of role, the roles he had in In Living Color, but this movie surprised me. sure it wasn't great, but i liked it 7.5/10

Zodiac:
damn this movie was good, to bad it watched alot like an issue of Moon Knight, damn near incomprehensible. but still it was fricking amazing, 8/10

300:
one of the best movies ive seen in a long time, i really enjoy Frank Millers work when it is translated to the big screen (Sin City is one of my favorite movies), i actually bought a Leonidas McFarlane Action Figure 9/10

TMNT:
I loved the TMNT movies from the early 90's (actually just the first two i never saw the third one) I watched them over and over again, and i expected this movie to take a pretty serious turn away from them, but it didn't, this movie was really fun to watch 7/10

Blades of Glory
i only saw this because my dad rented this when i was at work, it's your typical Will Farell movie, so you might get some forced giggles here and there but totally not worth it 4/10

Grindhouse
Probably the best movie of the year, i have never had so much fun watching a movie seperatley each of the movies would both get 8/10, but together, and coupled with the awesome fake trailers this movie gets a solid 9.5/10

Disturbia
i have seen the plot to this movie in countless other movies, and tv shows, but this movie did it very well, it had great atmosphere, it really brings you into the movie, 8/10

Pathfinder
i wanted to like this movie, but there was nothing to like, it was a very mundane and average action movie, even if it had Indians (i dont care if its not PC) killing Norsemen 5/10

Hot fuzz:
the Shaun of the Dead team do it again!, one of the funnier movies this year, takes a turn i didn't expect. but it was thoroughly enjoyable 8/10

Spider-man 3:
probably the dissapointment of the year for me, what a frickin let down, they should have just made this movie about the New Goblin (make him the fricking green goblin, snowboarder reptile sucks) Sandman was unnecesary, and Venom should have been saved for #4 or something, plus Emo's piss me off 6/10

Pirates of the Caribbean: at worlds end:
i liked this movie, it was alot of fun just as youd expect a pirates movie to be, the story gets a little weird, and the shark does get jumped once you see the giant black lady, but whatever it was still a fun movie 7.5/10

Live free or die hard:
this was my first Die Hard movie so i can't compare it to the first 3 (is that right?) but this was a pretty cool movie, Justin Long (the Mac guy) made the movie for me, though, 7/10

Transformers:
this was a real surprise, i really enjoyed this movie, i didn't even care that Megatron was an X-Wing 8.5/10

The Simpson's movie:
the best simpsons related thing ive seen in along time, far better than anything from the last 6 seasons, but it still could have been alot better, cool animation, but they were still trying to be family guy in a few places and that pisses me off 6.5/10

Superbad:
THE FUNNIEST MOVIE OF THE YEAR, i loved this movie on so many levels, it was fricking hilarious, and its the only movie to ever get teen life so accuratley, this is a classic, and McLovin should get his own spinoff 9.5/10

Balls of fury:
i expected this movie to be alot better than it was, i could help but think about how aweseom Enter the Dragon was, plus this had the guy who played Shang Tsung in the first Mortal Kombat movie in it, overall it was pretty mediocre 6/10

Shoot em' up:
I really enjoyed this movie, you may have to take it with a grain of salt, because hey its very self aware of what this movie is trying to be, but i havent' had so much fun watching a movie since Grindhouse so thats gotta be a good thin 8.5/10

Children of Men:
Messiah Complex aint got nothing on this movie, it is a very enthralling movie, and the girl wants to name her kid Bazooka, i want to name my kid Bazooka well either Bazooka or Leonidas anyway 8.5/10

movies r fun

*edit* wow i just read this over, there is alot of spelling and grammatical errors, im not going to fix them

- The Darjeeling Limited - October 5th - Wes Anderson. 'Nuff Said.

- Bee Movie - November 2nd - The bits from the previews I've really enjoyed... Time will tell whether or not its any good
- Fred Claus - November 9th - I love Paul Giamatti, and him playing Santa Claus is just fantastic. I hope its not crap.
- Beowulf - November 16th - More Neil Gaiman! Woot!
- Enchanted - November 21st - The first Disney movie i've been excited about in AGES... Looks funny and charming and it might be the dawn of a new era for Disney
- The Golden Compass - December 7th - one of my favorite book series of all time... plus GREAT casting
- I Am Legend - December 14th - I love Will Smith movies, and I don't care who knows about it.
- National Treasure: The Book of Secrets - December 21st - enjoyed the first one enough
- Sweeney Todd - December 21st - Please God, don't suck. Sweeney is one of my alltime favorite musicals, and I might die if Burton doesnt do it justice.
- AVP: Requiem - December 25th - The first was the greatest love story of all time... How could I NOT see this movie?
- Charlie Wilson's War - December 25th - Aaron Sorkin Script. That's all I need to know.

And to get the ball rolling...

Movies I Plan To See Next Year:

- Cloverfield - January 18th - Hey, Its Mysterious! What can I say?
- Iron Man - May 2nd - Even if I hated comics, I love Robert Downey Jr. and will flock to whatever movie he's in.
- Speed Racer - May 9th - Unless it looks really, really awful.
- Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian - May 16th - I liked the first one well enough, time to see if they decided to improve or simply run with what they had before.
- Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull - May 22nd - God, I hate the title, but hey! Its Indiana Jones... They'd have to try really hard to **** up with this franchise.
- The Incredible Hulk - June 16th - I love Edward Norton. And I really want to see a Hulk movie that can wash Ang Lee's crap out of my mind forever.
- Get Smart - June 20th - If this looks more and more like the Pink Panther remake, it will be off my list in a heartbeat.
- WALL-E - June 27th - Pixar can do no wrong.
- Hellboy 2: The Golden Army - July 2nd - First one I actually liked better than Hellboy comics, hopefully they keep it up.
- The Dark Knight - July 18th - As if I need a reason.
- Mamma Mia! - July 18th - I want to see Meryl Streyp sing, dammit.
- The Mummy: The Tomb of the Dragon Emperor - July 25th - Why not? The other movies were fun to watch, I dont see why this one wouldn't be.
- Bond 22 - November 7th - I assume they'll find a better name for it, but Casino Royale was ****ing awesome, and you bet your *** I'm going to see all further entries in the Daniel Craig Bond line.
- Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince - November 21st - Another movie from the director of the best film in the HP franchise? Definitely.
- Star Trek - December 25th - It's weird to be thinking this far ahead. But I'm all onboard for JJ Abrams reboot of the Star Trek Universe.
- War, Inc. - Unscheduled - John Cusack in what looks like his role from Grosse Point Blank
- Ponyo on a Cliff - Unscheduled - Hayao Miyazaki's latest. Won't be missing that.

I won't reprint that with every new addition, but I'll be happy its there January 1st.

2008 is going to be a solid movie year. 3 great-looking superhero flicks, Indy, Harry, and Bond is salavating enough as it is.... AND we get a new Pixar, which, from that one teaser alone, looks magnificient? AND a new Miyazaki film?

:drooling:

yeah, I didn't fully realize how awesome next year is going to be until tonight.

I am totally excited.

I'm still skeptical of the fact that they're
incorporating live action into
the new Pixar movie, but since every single one of their films has a spot in my Top 100 (coming this December!!!), I'll try to reserve judgment till the film is released.

Wait, what's the Miyazaki film??

Yeah, that's the one thing that seems stupid and awful.... but the teaser trailer made me melt, so I'm hoping for the best.

Wait, what's the Miyazaki film??

Bottom of DSF's post, right above mine.

1. 3:10 To Yuma - 10/10 - This was a fantastic brilliant movie. First Oscar-worthy thing I've really seen this year... The Acting was fantastic. Plus im a little bit in love with the kid.

2. Ratatouille - 9.9/10 - The .1 is knocked off because of the beginning which was a bit weaker than the rest of the film, but the second we got Remy talking to Gusteau and introduced Linguini, the film turned to solid gold. It is going to be hard as HELL to outrank this movie this year.

3. Knocked Up - 9/10 - Best comedy i've seen in a long while.

4. Zodiac - 8.75/10 - Well constructed, but a bit longer than necessary. The acting was fantastic though, probably the best I've seen so far this year.

5. Hot Fuzz - 8.5/10 - Fun, Funny, Action-packed. Also: Timothy Dalton is fantastic, and I now want to write movies where I can make him the bad guy.

6. Superbad - 8.5/10 - I can't even properly describe why I liked it... Aside from it being one of the most real High School Movies ever at the same time as being absurd and hilarious. Funnier than I was expecting. By FAR.

7. Sicko - 8.5/10 - Sicko is an important movie, especially if you're an American... Actually, it might only be an important film if you are an American... But if you are, this movie is equally as important a film as An Inconvenient Truth was last year. This movie is about how our country's healthcare system PALES in comparison to EVERY OTHER Western Country... This is an issue that we should make central in 2008... So, yeah. See it if you are American, if not, its not going to mean all that much. (which i deducted .25 for... the other point off is from the films various flaws, but its still a damn good movie)

8. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix - 8.5/10 - The pacing was off for about the first third of the film, and Bellatrix Lestrange was exaggerated into rediculousness... but the feel and the look of the film outdid ANYTHING in the previous movies... By deciding to adapt the book as it should be adapted rather than as defined by the previous movie, we get the best film yet in the series... One that feels like it tells a complete story. And Sirius was awesome... Gary Oldman was simply the most perfect choice for that role.

9. Hairspray - 8.5/10 - Fun, Funny, and put me in a great mood... I love the music, Cyclops rocked as Corny Collins, and even though Zac Efron has soulless demon eyes, it was nice to see that he could sing without them splicing someone else's voice into his. Also: Amanda Bynes was adorable

10. Bridge to Terabithia - 8.5/10 - Most heartwarming story i've seen all year, based on my favorite book in Middle School

11. The Simpsons Movie - 8/10 - A fun, and suprisingly good escapade with the Simpsons family... I was laughing through the whole thing, but at the end of the day it just felt like a long, high quality episode of the Simpsons, and didn't do much to be something more than that... So it gets a pretty high rating from sheer enjoyability, but not all that much substance.

12. Grindhouse - 8/10 - Lots of fun, it has its weak points, but the sheer enjoyability of Planet Terror, and the newest Tarantino film (which includes what I now consider to be the greatest chase sequence of ALL time)... Death Proof is simply brilliant. I'll see it again if it hits the theaters on its lonesome.

13. Stardust - 8/10 - I love the book so much that this movie could NEVER satisfy what I wanted (a word for word adaptation, including the depressing epilogue), but the more I think about it, the more I think that I need to see it again, because at the end of the movie I was very pleased with it, despite all the things I think it got wrong. It isn't the book, and I think the book is better, but its still a ****ing fantastic movie.

14. Ocean's 13 - 8/10 - Its not quite the quality of the first one... But it's ALMOST up there... The first half of the movie I was really anxious, because it took a WHILE to get going... But when it picked up, it really picked up and I enjoyed the hell out of it... Clooney and Pitt's relationship gives this an extra point, but I might knock it down later in the year.

15. 1408 - 8/10 - Cusack did a damn good job in the movie, without losing his usual Cusackian Charm... My biggest problem with it all is the fact that they never really explain WHY the room was evil. It just was. But a good movie, quite enjoyable.

16. Pirates of the Carribean: At World's End - 8/10 - Satisfying ending to a well executed trilogy. I enjoyed the hell out of it, and I'll happily dish out the money for the next film on the list.

17. Tranformers - 7/10 - Your typical fun summer action popcorn flick. Good Characters, Lots of Fun action, but not much substance.

18. 300 - 7/10 - Fun. Good. But the scenes in sparta interspersed with the narrative slows the story... I need to see it again (for the fourth time), but I'm pretty sure that this is where I stand on it. Mostly Good.

19. Across The Universe - 6.5/10 - The newcomer who plays Jude is the reason to see this movie, outside of him (and his ****ing beautiful voice), the plot is entirely unsubstantial, some of the sequences and characters are ENTIRELY unnecessary. It had so much potential, and could have reached it by focusing on character development and keeping the film grounded in realism, rather than being one music video after another. I might pick up a soundtrack, because some of the best covers of Beatles songs that I've ever heard. But that doesn't make it a good movie. Not by a longshot.

20. Fantastic Four: The Rise of the Silver Surfer - 6.5/10 - Had a lot of the flaws of the first, but rectified several of them... Johnny Storm continues to be the strongest aspect of the series, which I absolutely hope continues... My biggest Problem is with Mr. Fantastic, cuz, well... he should seem intelligent.

21. Shrek 3 - 6/10 - Solid Enough... Not as much heart as the first, Not as much funny as the second, but still a the end of the day it was an enjoyable solid movie with fantastic CGI... There's this bit with The Gingerbread Man's life flashing before his eyes that still makes me laugh just thinking about it. Not great, Not Bad. Certainly better than I expected.

22. Spider-Man 3 - 6/10 - The most disapointing film experience I've had all year. This made me cringe so much with what they messed up that every time something decent happened it was ruined by the inconsistency of it all... The good parts simply showed that this COULD have been good. But they opted against it, apparently...

23. Evan Almighty - 5/10 - It had heart, but no real discernable message, and poor usage of Wanda Sykes, who I think can be fantastic when she's got a good script. I'm glad I saw it once, but doubt i'll ever see it again.

24. Ghost Rider - 4/10 - This movie made me want to make my own Ghost Rider movie, one that was good.

25. Bratz - 1/10 - One Point for being so bad that I could sit through the whole thing, laughing my *** off at the terrible acting and absolute lack of plot and anything worthwhile.

Movies I'm Looking Forward To:
- The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford - September 21st - the title says it all
- The Darjeeling Limited - October 5th - Wes Anderson. 'Nuff Said.
- Elizabeth: The Golden Age - October 12th - I loved the first one, the second looks more fun and actiony in addition to all that was good about the first... I'm excited.

I can't wait for American Gangster (I LOVE Gangster films and this looks to be amazing), The Golden Compass (Next LotR, in my opinion) and I Am Legend (Because I like Will Smith and the premise is awesome).

Oh, and next year is good for Indy alone. Batman, Iron Man, Half Blood Prince, Wall*E, and Bond 22 just make it bloody fantastic.
