He started off as a fairly mundane blind monster hunter in the DCU, moved over to Vertigo with the Books of Magic, where he tried to kill the hero, and exhibited symptoms of schizophrenia or MPD. He later appeared in The Trenchcoat Brigade and had his own miniseries that's not really considered canon anymore.
