What Do you Read

I'm reading The Belgariad Quintent by David Eddings.

The first one was iffy, there wasn't really a climax, but it has gotten so much better as it went on.

Just finished reading Seeing Redd, the second installment of Frank Beddor's The Looking Glass Wars, which I am reviewing for work.

I'm a little meh on it, but I can't really give it a thumbs down since the reviews I write are meant to SELL books, so at best I'm giving it an even-handed appraisal of its strengths and weaknesses.

I'm obsessed with cheesy Doctor Who novels adapting the TV series, which I have never seen. They're like 140 pages each and just awesome.

I'm reading His Dark Materials.

And not too impressed with the later ones. He builds this world in Golden Compass, then abandons it in the next novel.
Pretty much.

The first book is really great, and it has a nice tight perspective on Lyra and limits itself to a very interesting world...

...then we get weirdly self-reliant orphan boy from another universe only not an interesting one, who cuts himself with a Super Knife and bleeds for like thirteen chapters.

...and by the last novel, a super-physicist starts hanging out with a manimal tribe and develops a Super Spyglass.

I still like the defiant attitude it has towards organized religion, but there's no denying it's still a mess of a trilogy.

I've been re-reading London Fields, and I picked up The Fortress of Solitude the other day, which I've been meaning to read for a while.

On another note, I'm trying to work on a novel, but still need some research material, so if anyone knows any good books on pro-wrestling they could suggest, I'd really appreciate it.

I read No Country For Old Men. It was awesome.

The movie was better, it made some brilliant edits, but the book was still very good.

But then, I usually like things that make me feel sad about getting older.

I am reading Salem's Lot by Mr. Stephen King... I mean, its early king, so its not the best writing in the world, but I'm still enjoying it.

That reminds me, I was going to order Salem's Lot today.

Thanks DSF, if I could go back in time I would vote for you in the Greatest Member competition!

(but I can't)

Early King tend to be better stories. Later King are mediocre stories written better. And longer.

I think the Stand is his personal best. I also liked IT but that's largely because the made for TV movie scaring the **** out of me as a kid. So after that, I had to track down the book and read it.

I agree with that, but I've never bothered with the Miniseries. The book was too perfect.

I think my favorite works by King have always been his short story collections. Novel-wise, Pet Sematary has always had a fond spot in my heart, but I think his best works in the genre are his Richard Bachman works. Those books and his short story collection are real proof that King is actually an author of merit, rather than just a sell-machine.

I just started reading King last year. I've read The Gunslinger, The Shining, Cell, and The Colorado Kid. I just ordered 'Salem's Lot.
