Ultimate Spider-Man #103... SPOILERS!

Heh... I love how we are sincerely the most vehemently anti-Ultimate Spider-Man board on the interwebs...

From the Bendis Boards:
I thought the Doc Ock reveal was great. This wasn't a HUGE surprise, but a surprise nonetheless. It was geat to see Ock almost excited to show Peter the full extent of his abilities. I really hope there is some connection to Magneto here.

Although to be fair, a lot of people were less than thrilled about the reveal, but the hype was generally positive...

...

*sigh*

EDIT: Also... I absolutely adore how the Newsarama boardsmembers refer to the term Magneto as if it applies to any humanoid with magnetic abilities. According to this concept, Polaris is a Magneto. Magneto is a Magneto too, I suppose... They think this issue is a brilliant issue as well. The silly buggers.

Maybe I'm alone, but I really liked this issue, which is the first one in this entire arc that I"ve seriously liked.

Peter's "deal" with Fury was a cool little twist. Richard Parker as a clone, well, I am actually relieved on that point. There's something weird about having Peter's dad around, something that IMO messed with the dynamic of a Spider-Man story. I was wondering about him too, there's a lot of things that seemed weird about him and didn't add up, and this makes sense.

I agree - it's a major plot hole with Doc Ock, but it's a good one. It makes him really tough to stop from now on and ups him a notch on the villian level. I do wish he wouldn't have thrown metal around like he did, it would be better if he could only use his magnetic powers to control metal he forms into arms. A plot hole's a plot hole anyway you look at it though.

If I had to take a guess, I think all the clones will die except for Spider-Woman, which is fine by me. I think all of them were throwaway characters.

Maybe because I feel like my childhood has been raped? I dunno, but I'm feeling seriously violated here.

"What's a Magneto?" - Wolverine, X-Men

You're not serious. Unless you're, like, twelve years old. I don't understand how something that happens to a character that's been around six years could make you feel that way.

Not saying it doesn't suck, but come on. This is a new book and character and if you're just judging it by some other book or character than you're completely wrong.

I'm sure he was talking about Doc Ock in general, who has been around longer than most of us, and not Ultimate Doctor Octamagnetopus.

I used to worry about that. That maybe we were wrong and our UC contained hatred of this book was just fueling each other and spurring us further and further into the USM sucks cycle.

Then I go visit other boards to see what they think and I realize they are all ****ing idiots. This sucks.

There is no such thing as a good plot hole.

Yeah. Seriously, how do you screw up Doc Ock? His origin worked in USM. They had a good thing going and then *bam* Bendis screwed him up for no particular reason.

You really like that, don't you?

Me too, but when you have Doc quoting an ****tard that says, "I hope there's a Magneto connection" with Doctor Mother ****ing Octopus...you realize...we're not drinking the same water supply as these guys.

The biggest problem in Doctor Magnet is that you cannot call him Doc Ock anymore. If he has Magnet powers he doesn't need four arms on his back. His name is invalid.

Of course the running up big problem to this is that it's retarded.

Ultimate Doctor Octamagnetopus.

It's fun to say outloud. I didn't believe you guys at first when you said that on other boards people liked USM. I laughed at your alleged sarcasm, slapped my knee and went back to writing angry letters to Brian Michael Bendis. However...I was on 1up, reading about some new game (hell if I remember what) and I didn't believe the score that was given to it by whatever reviewer. So, I went on the boards to see what people thought of the game. While I was there I decided to check out the comic book forums.

There was, literally, a thread titled "ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN ROCKS MY SOCKS OFF LOL" or something stupid like that.

@$#% YOU BENDIS!

I think it's extra painful because Doc Ock was just so utterly terrifying before that moment. He was so smug and totally certain he was right, gloating over how he'd utterly destroyed Peter. It was bone-chilling, then it sucked.

It's like getting ice cream seconds before getting hit by a car.

actually , I would accept doc ock's new powers if they were explained!!

because the dialogue he did with Peter about how he messed up his life was the mest villain-monolgue I read on any Ultimate title since the Norman Osborn's threat to Peter "I'll beat you up until you nearly die, then I will watch you recover, just when you feel human again I will beat you up until you die!"

but the rest wasn't as great as the green goblin fight (shame on bendis!)

The twist about Fury is nicey too, but after the devastation this story created, this doesn't mean much to me. After MjGoblin and Magnetock nothing can make me feel good about USM, as long Matt Murdock becomes his spritual father or something.

And the raping my childhood thing is pretty much true!!
6 years is ain't a small amount of time, after the expectations I had on USM, when it gets this far from what it should/could have been, well, its raping our childhood!

Something just occurred to me.

How are Ultimate Doctor Octamagnetopus' (it is fun to say!) arms sticking to his back? Is he stabbing himself, or are some metal bits wrapped around his chest under his shirt?

Also, I think he's supposed to be able to control metal, but not magnets. So he's able to use shrapnel to attack the clones and control his arms, but he can't mess with electronics or the earth's magnetic field like Magneto can.

There's an interview with Bagley here that has some pages from 104 without dialogue. He also mentions some of the things coming up in the series. It's all stuff you could figure out was coming on your own--shots of Peter and Jessica fighting Ultimate Doctor Octamagnetopus and predictable things like that.

i think the only way ock could be saved, is if these magnekinetic (is that the right term) is a rouse, using a sophisticated series of magnet's installed throughout oscorp allowing Ock to get the upper hand

other wise we might be facing ultimate marvel's second major retcon (the first being ultimate iron man)

*EDIT* the USM readers on newsarama scare the hell out of me, they say that the clone saga has been better than civil war, and that bendis can do no wrong on this book, and this book delivered exactly what it promised, how can stupidity be so rampant, even from repected members of the forum's there. i smell a conspiracy

Wait... what? I think I'm confused... is it just me, or was EVERYTHING that Richard/Peter Parker told in the big, all-important 100th issue, completely false? I spent literally over half of a comic book reading a backstory that was a lie? Sure, pieces of it were true, like everything that happened before the plane crash, but everything that Richard/Peter talked about during and after the crash- even it had an element of truth to it- was distorted by the fact that Richard/Peter wasn't there. That means that (counts pages...) 12 pages of USM #100 are now being retconned. I can only think of one possible solution- he was cloned within a few months of the whole "Venom" thing, and then met May- but, wasn't he created after "Hollywood?' Ugh, someone who's smarter than me, please explain how this whole Richard Parker clone thing works, because the way I understand it, it's really, really dumb.

Other than that, it was an alright issue. 2.5/5

No, it really was that dumb. You know, with all the useless Richard Parker bull**** and the recap pages (and I guess some people might count the sketchbook pages as crappy, though I liked them) the 100th issue actually had less real content than the average issue. Plus, you can pretty much write any scene with Tarantula off, since the poor guy was completely redundant. Maybe his weird chest anatomy means the girder missed a vital spot? If Tarantula dies, it will be so completely lame that they wasted time on him.

You're not alone. I'm probably alone in liking this entire arc so far. Also Keehar's theory does seem to hold some water particularly since Doc Ock hasn't ruptured the entire building yet with all the metal that must be running a facility like that.
