Re: Tom Cruise banned by Germany
I'm currently in Berlin.
Deutsche is the only European language I know with (minimal) amounts of skill. I took it seven years ago, but had no one to practice it on so I am no longer able to hold any kind of conversation with it.
However, I know enough words to vaguely decipher things I see in print. I bring this up only because I wanted to point out that here in Germany, there's a lot of ribbing on Tom Cruise.
One newspaper columnist was genttly putting down an American columnist who made fun Germans speaking English with a German accent and suggested that Germans should make fun of Americans who speak German with an American accent.
He then says that the only exception to this is if the American in question is some short dude with a tall young brunette, to which the responsibility of the German is to tell him to "stop ****ting on our history" or something to that effect.
In any case, writers are liberally injecting small amounts of Tom Cruise jokes into their columns regardless of its relevance to what they are talking about, simply because it's topical humor now in Germany.
Oh, and there're also some articles about Scientology, but I still haven't deciphered them yet.
