Re: The strike is on

I did a whole long post earlier today and it's gone. I don't know why. I had a great doctor metaphor in it to express Mole's counter.

You mean they aren't getting paid more when people buy their work in a new format. They are most certainly getting paid for their work.

Their contract gives them residuals on syndication, video, and all the rest. But not iTunes or any of that, because it's brand new technology.

They're saying it should be treated exactly the same as the other mediums.

The strike isn't about getting more than they deserve, but keeping what they're getting.

Wage is increased to match inflation - this is the technological equivalent.

Re: The strike is on

A lot of the income people make on television is on the revenue created by sales... Keep in mind most writers aren't writing constantly, they write something, get paid a flat fee for it to be produced, and its the money from syndication (which honestly isn't happening all that much anymore unless its an older show) and sales that let writers do things like pay their rent, and not have to get a second job waiting tables so that they can continue to write scripts for television and movies.

And when a TV show gets cancelled, thats the money that helps them get along until they can get onto a new writing staff.

Less people are buying DVDs (which they aren't getting paid much for anyways, because the original contracts focus more on VHS sales, which i think we all can accept isn't an issue anymore) and more and more people are buying from iTunes and similar venues.

The Producers and Executives are the ONLY people getting money from online sales. How the hell is this fair???

I have not heard ANY argument against this that even makes a LITTLE sense.

Re: The strike is on

But wouldn't one notice that it would be?

I thought buying tv shows on the internet barely became big last year or the year before which was one of the reasons that justified shows like The Office to keep airing. So i think since then, it's been a noticable market to justify keeping shows from cancellation which also allows writers to keep their job thus them deserving a cut? i don't know, hibiki's crazy conspirator guesstimations.

Re: The strike is on

So, it seems LOST has 8 episodes in the can that will be shown starting in a few months, but ending with a cliffhanger:

Comingsoon

You'd think so but there's a real attitude in traditional media that new media will never be big, useful or good.

The strike isn't about getting more than they deserve, but keeping what they're getting.

Yeah, have fun with your inflation in the States guys!

Re: The strike is on

Next weeks' episode of THe Office will be the last new one for a while since Steve Carell refuses to cross picket lines, whatever that means.

I believe that means he's on the writers side.

I love the way he's wording it...

As someone who likes BOTH versions of The Office, I'd have to say that most arguments over which one is better are complete baloney.
