Maybe they thought they had enough of that in Animal Man and Swamp Thing? It is an interesting idea though.
I don think I realized it before you said it here but I think you're right. It's one of the problems I had with Blackest Night.
I wouldn't mind an alternate interpretation of Aquaman but it just seemed like he was trying to do a horror thing and falling flat, at least with the first story. And Blackest Night absolutely struck me as a failed attempt at superhero horror.
The main problem is, he's trying to tell this hyper-defensive story about "Hey guys! Aquaman REALLY IS COOL!" but he doesn't offer anything that distinguishes Aquaman from any other superhero.
