The Black Donnellys

Another week and another fantatstic show.

First off---I just love how the opening credits roll. All to the sounds of gunshots. No faces...no montages...just names and gunshots. Awesome. I am now on a search to find the theme song.

Recap:
We pick up where we left off last week with Kevin and Tommy walking away from shooting Sal Manetta, the boss of the Italians, and Hughie Farrell of the Irish mob. It's hard to believe that they are kids who have just murdered two of the biggest names in the neighborhood because even though it doesn't seem like this has ever happened in their past, Tommy seems to handle it well.

They return to the hospital to visit their badly beaten brother Sean and solidify an alibi. When Helen Donnelly sees blood on Kevin's shirt she just pushes his sleeve under his coat, acknowledging and at the same time ignoring what she must know her sons have been up to.

Jenny, who is connected to Tommy on a much deeper level than just friendship, knows that something is wrong. So she gives him the third degree but he tries to be allusive. That fails and he starts to cry so she kisses him to make it all better. It's the first physical acknowledgement of their feelings for each other, which had been insinuated in the pilot episode. It also shows Tommy's duel personality: cold-blooded killer and soft romantic.

As Jimmy waits in prison for someone to bail him out, the Donnellys hear that Sean will probably pull through. We get another glimpse of the matriarch of the family, Helen, as she reigns over Sean's bed and barely acknowledges his girl of the moment, Tommy's ex, Kelly.

In continuing their quest to cover up the shooting, Tommy and Kevin do some sly shopping or rather shoplifting. In a method new to me, they wrap clothing in aluminum foil to protect it from the security detectors and walk out with another, cleaner, outfit.

When Kevin and Tommy go to burn their clothes, they find the body of Jimmy's ransom victim: Louie. There is some heavy and seemingly unnecessary dialogue about how to dump the body until the phone rings and it's Jimmy who wants to be bailed out. Jimmy tells Kevin where the ransom money is and he takes it to go bail him out with but Tommy won't have it. Kevin is either a pushover or Tommy is too domineering, either way it is hard to see any character development in Kevin. Joey Ice Cream just shows up at random times for some comedic relief.

Tommy and Kevin steal a van to dispose of the body. Of course Chuck Barry's "Louie Louie" is playing in the background. The "abandoned swamp" that Kevin suggested turns out to be a Howe's, so they have to make other plans: burning the body. But his feet stick out of the trash can so Tommy leaves Kevin with the body to go back to the Howe's and pick up a hammer and they strip down to smash him to bits. Kevin can't stomach the breaking bones and blood spatter so he throws up while Tommy is unfazed. Tommy keeps going with the brutality, a complete bloody mess, and then rolls the drum with the body into a river – he's covered in blood and dressed in only his underwear.

After we see Jenny cleaning off the blood in the bar's basement, Tommy is hosing off his own blood spattered body. Kevin apologizes for not helping but Tommy isn't interested. They fight each other over the ransom money and though Kevin points a gun at Tommy, he just breaks down emotionally. Tommy takes over and burns the van.

Tommy goes to see Nicky Cottero to talk and says he let Louie go and that he doesn't want bad blood so he gives back the ransom money. Nicky says he'll take the money but that he wants 1,000 per week until Louie gets back. When Nicky threatens Jimmy's life to seal the deal, Tommy informs him that Jimmy is in jail, smiling after that statement on the way out. Joey Ice Cream is in the background again.

Tommy goes to the diner to see Jenny and they end up making love in earnest as he tells her that he loves her. She seems a bit cold afterward and then tells him that she can't be with him, after she just had sex with him. He's shocked as am I. Idon't think this is anywhere near over, their relationship seems like it will be a large focus of the show, the only non-violent part about it thus far.

As Tommy leaves the diner, Hughie's brother stops him in the street to talk about Hughie. Tommy keeps his cool and doesn't let on he knows anything or that he is, in fact, the murderer. He just keeps eyeing the axe that Hughie's brother is holding. They end their conversation peacefully but I can tell that it is only the beginning of that saga.

Seriously...I pity anyone who is able to catch the show but just doesn't. It's that good.

I like the parts where Joey Ice Cream just appears outta nowhere. It's done for comedic purposes....but also shows a deeper side of his character as "the guy who was always there...but always looking in and regardless of how tight---he will never be a Donnelly".

I'm also interested in Jenny's side as well. She seems to be the root of normalcy in Tommy's life. But I wonder how their "romance" will play out---especially with her being married....but doesn't know her husband is dead.

Such a damn good show.

Last night's episode was probably better than the premiere episode.

The ending just perfectly fit the story until that point. Tommy said he would make any sacrifice if his brother could walk again. In the end, he sacrificed what made him special in Jenny's eyes.

It's amazing how methodical and bad *** Tommy is. He's the kind of guy I'd like to be.

See....I think it wasn't what made him special....but it was losing Jenny herself. The one thing he wanted most in the world was her and her love....but she knows what he's becoming and she can't be part of that world. So he sacrificed her.

Doesn't hurt that the kid is deceptively ripped. I was watching that scene with him and the hammer and I kept trying to cast him in some kinda superhero role.

That's the other reason I'd love to be like him.

If I had that kind of body, I'd find rediculous excuses not to wear a shirt.

im a little bit mixed on last night esp. it was good, really good BUT, if they keep up this kind of storyline, it seems there going to run out of ideas by the 2nd season and just become a 3rd level drama show with a lot of repeating material, yet im still holding out.

and i have to wonder how long in the future this takes place? cuz if JIC (Joey Ice Cream) is in jail and ranting his guts out what happened to the brothers?

the way the age is set up (if i understand right) Oldest to youngest.

Jimmy- the oldest and a drug junki, owns the Fire Cracker Lounge (Bar)

Kevin
- Gambler that looses money on everything, and backs up Tommy no-matter-what.

Tommy-Art Student in college, only one able to drive, and busted jimmy's leg when younger on a joy ride.

Sean- the youngest and likes women and takes everyone else's.
_____

Jenny-Seems to be the same age as Tommy and helps her father run a diner.

JIC
- about the same age as Kevin and knows everything some how, even though he can't be a Donnelly. was in Juvi around 2000.

So this episode was great. Not as great as #2.....but just as great as #1.

Recap
Joey Ice Cream is again telling the story from jail. Only this time he isn't in interrogation, he's just in his cell.

We see Jimmy drinking and then throwing up in the alley, where Dokey finds him. Jimmy was apparently mouthing off in a bar about him and his brothers killing someone and Dokey is suspicious. It doesn't really amount to anything but Dokey spends the rest of the episode hunting for answers about Huey's death. Jimmy later asks Tommy for a gun to kill Dokey but of course Tommy won't give him one.

So Jimmy heads off to his girlfriend to do some drugs instead. This leads to them becoming highly intoxicated and causing a general uproar elsewhere. They first crash Sal's funeral, where Jimmy pees on a gravestone while the Italians look on. Then they crash the wake at the Firecracker. It's the most enjoyable part of the whole episode, as the drama of it all starts to wear on you after a while.

Kevin and Joey Ice Cream troll through New York and steal a cab to pick up booze for the wake. It's also an enjoyable little jaunt as they go to a restaurant in order to steal some booze and they can only find kosher wine. When they return the cab, someone jumps in to take a ride, so Kevin smashes his face in. Of course, that is a natural reaction.

Kate Farrell, Hughie's widow, asks Tommy to hold Huey's wake at the Firecracker. Tommy stops by the diner to talk to Jenny about helping them out (since Jimmy ruined the food in the freezer) and she's completely cold. She says she'll help him "for Huey's family."

At the funeral, Tommy talks to Kate and her young son Mathew. It's all nice, despite the fact that Tommy killed her husband (she doesn't know so I guess there is no harm done), until Dokey shows up. Dokey has a word with Tommy and tells him that he knows about Huey, but Tommy plays dumb.

Back in the pew, Tommy has a flashback to his own father's funeral, where Huey helped them prepare. Joey gives us voice over stating the connection between this day and that day so long ago. Tommy is again reminded about Dokey's suspicions during his speech at the funeral, which seems directed towards Tommy.

Jenny gets hit on while working in the diner and later flirts with the same guy at the funeral. At the wake, Dokey talks to Jenny about the night Huey died. Jenny lies for Tommy and Kevin, saying they were at the hospital the whole night. After rushing outside, Tommy follows and they have a short talk. She says she can understand about avenging Sean but doesn't understand why he had to kill Huey. He tells her to trust him and stop asking about that night. So she goes from being cold to being warm again and crying on Tommy and then telling him she has to "try something else."

Dokey and his partner are in the basement of the Firecracker with Jenny and Dokey's signature axe. Dokey says he knows that Jimmy and Tommy killed Huey. Tommy tells Dokey that he'll tell him what happened if Dokey lets Jenny go. After Jenny leaves, Tommy tells Dokey (after some gun drama) that they needed Huey's help with an Italian that they killed (Louie Downtown). Dokey finds blood in the basement drain and so he believes Tommy's story. When they come out of the basement, Jenny is waiting. Tommy apologizes but she walks away. Tommy tries to give a speech about Huey but notices Jenny walking away with another man and can barely keep his composure.

You all need to start watching this show.....or else I'm gonna do some traveling and throat punching. You diggin' my ditch?

Seriously.....as much as I love 24....this show now surpasses 24 as my "Most Beloved Monday Night Show".

For serious.

I watched the last two episodes on NBC.Com this afternoon, and they were great.

Tommy is like my role model now. He's a good guy who does terrible things.

Oh for ****s sake!!!!

Why do I even bother watching new shows? Why do I bother liking anything? Anytime I like something on TV...it either gets cancelled or starts to suck.

**** you NBC.

So I guess since I like "Andy Barker P.I" that show only has another 2 weeks left? And I guess if I like FOX's "Drive" that they'll only play about 5 episodes before they cancel that?

You cancel great shows like this......but then you replace it with retarded "improv" comedy from actors/comedians who haven't had some work in a while?

I hate you NBC. I ****ing hate you.

My only consolation is that I can watch the remainder of the episodes online. Still.....it's a raw deal.

The other night I watched Jay Leno for the first time in ages (letterman was preempted for Masters coverage) and he made some sort of smarmy joke about how bad the show was.

I haven't seen the show, but I bet it's Cheers compared to freakin Jay Leno.

Leno is the last person to say something sucks. The only reason he is on air is because he's locked into a fat contract.

I kid you not.....I would rather watch a Patch Adams, Bicentennial Man, RV, and Jack marathon 16 times over rather than watch 10 minutes of Leno. I trid watching his show just the other day because he had Kurt Russel and Shia LeBouf on. Even on fast forward I couldn't end the show quick enough.

Trust me.....it was REALLY great. I think it suffered from mid-season scheduling.

This is such bull crap. I just watch one of the last episodes on NBC.com, and it was ****ing great! NBC exec don't deserve to breath for replacing Black Donnellys with crappy game shows. I swear game shows are the work of the devil. TV execs love that game shows are much cheaper than dramas and sitcoms.

Now I actually resent people who watch shows like Deal or No Deal for perpetuating this terrible system.

This is why on principal I like networks like HBO because they put shows on the air that people want to watch and then actually keep them on the air.
