The All About Manga Thread

Vinland is up.

Still boring. No killing.

I'd also recommend Witch Hunter. It took a few chapters to really get going, but they're up to 17 now and it's quite good.

So, I started reading Alive: The Final Evolution. I gotta tell you it's pretty damn good. After reading the link Houde posted at the beginning of this thread, I don't see the incest link the critic was talking about. I get where he getting that info from, but I don't see it. Besides that, it's really good. I recommend it.

It's alot farther in.

It's never really explored either. Just a passing issue, where the trucker and the sister get drunk together.

oh i see. Yeah i followed the link iceshadow posted and realized about 4 issues in that it wasn't anything like the article described. Alive is just about two guys that avoid execution and live in a small room together. and across the way is a "magic" girl. It wasn't bad but the art bothered me.

so far i'm really digging it. The art is good. Every character so far is interesting. It's just gonna suck when i catch up.

Will do. Also, I gots me some opinions on series that I haven't seen anyone mention yet, I will post sometime tonight or this week.

I've spent the past three days on an archive binge for 20th Century Boys.

Oh lord, the awesome.

So I caught up on Witch Hunter and I'm really digging it.

Anyway here's some other series I'm liking right now:

Deus x Makina- A manga set in an alternate world that's part steampunk part wild west, the story occurs several years after a war where killer robots (called Clockworkers) were created and almost brought the world to ruin. Makina and her partner Deus (who is also a Clockworker) are agents of the CWA, an organization that hunts down rogue Clockworkers, and the story goes from there. It's only nine chapters in, so not that much has happened, but there is promise with the story really picking up once they return to the city. My favorite scene so far is
when the kid sidekick is seriously contemplating beating the guy who got his parents killed with a pipe, all at the urging of a CWA agent Killer Bee.
4/5 for now.

Gamble Fish- A more contemporary manga set at super elite private school. Shirasagi Tomu who is neither rich nor elite has just transferred to said school. His goal? He wants 10 billion yen, and he's going to make it by gambling against the other students. This manga was a nice change of pace from all of the usual stuff, and it's fun trying to figure out how Tomu beats people at the games even when they cheat. It's only four chapters in but I can see how the premise could get stale after a while, however, for now this is a series I look forward to every week. 5/5.

Defense Devil- From the guys who did the awesome Shin Angyo Onshi, Defense Devil is about the demon Mephisto Barto Kucabara (and his servant/friend Bichula) who was forced out of hell and now lives in Limbo. So he decides to become a defense lawyer for humans who were might not deserve to actually go to hell. In return if he clears their name, Kucabara is able to collect dark matter from his clients. If he collects enough, then he can go back home, but the various shinigamis/grim reapers will be fighting him every step of the way (since they want the human souls for them selves). One thing I love about this book is the detailed artwork (especially with the various shinigami personal hells). The book also has a pretty solid mix of mystery and action. The story was about to get slightly repetitive but then it shifted gears and is now laying the groundwork for the overarching plot, so I got hooked again. 4/5.

I liked the scene where the scientist was trying to explain to the bad guys how impractically stupid a giant robot is in real life.

It is a great scene. Both because the scientist just shoots every idea they have out of the water, and the bad guys just refuse to listen to reason.

I think by favorite part of TCB is the fact that the villain's plan was cooked up by a bunch of bored eight-year-olds. And he makes it look fabulous.

I should see the live-action movie sometime.

I'm really enjoying Naruto, One Piece, and even Bleach right now. It's cool that they're all hitting their big arc conclusions in unison like this.

I loved how they beat the big skeleton guy in Bleach, and Sasuke is so ****ed right now. One Piece is pretty insane too.

Really? I haven't truly enjoyed Naruto since the Hidan and Kakuzu arc. Ever since it seems like Kishimoto has no clue where he is going with his own story. Hell, even the Anime's subpar Three-Tails filler arc was better than the manga has been.

I hated the Pein arc, but the Kage meeting and subsequent fallout has been pretty good.

kinda in agreement. When read all together, the Pein arc is pretty exciting. It just didn't have a good balance of talking and fighting for a measley 16 page issues over the span of what seemed like 5 months.

The kage summit is interesting because now we're seeing more new characters that are actually interesting.
