Actually some astrophysicists believe that of all the apocalyptic scenarios, the transversing of the galactic equator could be very real. Every time this has happened in the past (roughly every 250,000 years) there has been a massive shift in the earth's poles (the last time moved them to their current place from roughly where brazil is now)
