Re: Heroes *Spoilers*
Good episode. Baaaad dialogue.
"So that's why Clark Kent wears those glasses!".... DERP!
"I've done that and that and that.... but this hurts".....DERRRRP!
I know. It
hurt. Everyone was right about the emo-Bennets. :|
The fact that Hayden actually pulled that line off while forcing herself to cry shows how good of an actress she is.
I actually thought she was pretty crappy there. I didn't find her convincing at all. All her crying scenes are the same. There's lots of different types of crying, but it seems the majority of actors and directors only know one: the fake one.
(I think Hayden Patisserie is an okay actor, she's nothing amazing, but she's pleasant enough.)
(Another sidenote! I think it'd be cool if Claire got her memory erased - or if Noah had his erased...)
Anyhow, Bass' REVIEW OF DOOM!
I liked some of it. But not all of it.
Because this is written by the 'dark half' of the HEROES writing staff - the side that thinks Peter, Maya, and Monica are good ideas, while Parkman, and Nathan shouldn't appear. Ugh.
First of all - stupid "Clark Kent" line aside, Monica is an awful character. She finally decides to use her powers to do something, the kids show up, and she gets kidnapped. Where's all her super kung fu moves? Oh, she'll pull them off next week, but for now, she's "scared" and can't do anything. Even though the last time a guy pulled a gun on her she pulled off an insanely complicated acrobatic feat, took him down, and
didn't know she had powers. Instead, what will happen is Niki will show up, get shot, Monica will then go all Bruce Lee, and Niki will die in Micah's arms, saying something about loving her. Because in action stories, the only reason to give a character a terminal illness is to kill them off with a bullet. Or something else. Anything but the illness. And then Micah will probably give up the hero-ing idea because his parents died doing it, or he'll become a hero because of that. Who knows. I think it sucks. And killing Monica doesn't help because not only is she useless to the story so far, but she'll be forever useless. It seems her purpose is to replace Niki as Micah's mum. Awful, dead end of a character.
Then we get the twins - who for the first time, actually had a good week. I really wasn't expecting Alejandro to die, I expected this 'love triangle' to go on for at least two more weeks, but no, he got stabbed up and I felt not only sorry for him, but I thought it was about time Sylar did something other than rest on his laurels earned from season 1. I really liked it. I am confused as to why Sylar hasn't killed Maya yet since - well, I assume he'll have Candice's powers when he gets cured (or possibly, Mohinder will poison him if he's smart).
I actually think Mohinder is going to get killed. I'm really expecting it to happen.
Hiro was fine except for the "I can travel through time when I really want to" moment. Almost every time Hiro teleports through time, he ends up spending at least one episode in the time period. But this time, he does it super-fast because the plot needs it. :? (I still love him and Ando though).
The Bennet's sucked, and Elle was just weird. Why the hell would Bob send her? Why wouldn't he have an incognito suit following them? Doesn't make much sense.
But then, there's Peter "Plot Point" Petrelli. This character is almost unwritable. In the scene with Victoria Pratt, where she says Adam wants to kill everyone, why doesn't he read their minds to find out the truth? He
does read her mind to find out where the serum is kept, but doesn't read her mind to check? Sure, sure, he trusts Adam. I get that. But trust is an emotional state based on instinct or experience. Peter can
know for certain. Not doing it just makes him stupid as hell.
And it gets worse, Hiro shows up and they're about to have a Marvel Team-Up: fight for no reason at all. "He killed my father...
and will release a plague to kill everyone" and Peter reads Hiro's mind (whom he'll trust a damn sight more than Pratt's and so mind-reading is completely within his character) and discovers its true and cuts Adam's head off in frozen time. But that won't happen.
Peter will be stupid again next episode. I hope he dies, but he won't.
And I find it bloody stupid that they've decided to say that taking off their head kills them. All of a sudden, Adam Munroe is laughably weak. Anyone can kill him. It better be a lie. Maya being the only way to kill him makes more sense.
Some of this episode was cool, but I'm more excited about next week. This week was kinda stupid all around.
To a larger extent, I'm disappointed at the repetition. Look where we are: season cliffhanger and we've got Sylar in Mohinder's apartment -
again. We've got them all trying to stop an apocalyptic future -
again. It's like they had one good idea.
I'm hoping there will be a plot-twist. I am begging that the Shanti virus that kills everyone is
not serum 1138 or whatever, but is the mutated virus created when Maya is given the "virus" to kill her powers. The other alternative is that the plague is actually Sylar once he gets her powers and can't control them (but I doubt it since Sylar has always proven he can control the powers he takes and because it would
really just be season 1.1 - they just replaced "bomb" with "plague". The last episode can be called "How to Stop a Plague-making Man").
I dunno.
I think they messed up the chronology on this season. They could've done everything they did by 8 or so.
I said already that Peter never needed the amnesia; and to do it my way causes two problems: one is Caitlin, and the other is the fact that Adam killed people while Peter was absent.
Solved thusly: the only woman in the Company prison who was nice to Peter is called Caitlin. And he leaves her in the future - that's when he decides to break himself and Adam out. To stop the plague. Adam of course takes this future trek as an omen that
he will succeed. Good for him. He then has the founders killed - but by Nightmare-Man. He doesn't need to kill Kaito personally. The only reason he does is so that Hiro can easily find out Adam's still alive in 2007. It would be cooler for Hrio to not know who Nightmare-Man is, and then do some detective work, meet up with Parkman, and so forth. I loved the detective work he did with Ando this episode, and there should've been more of it.
Monica doesn't need to be in it at all. But if you must stick her in, you can do so over two episodes - the first one has her discovering her powers and Micah giving her an iPod with all that stuff on it (he totally could do it) and the second one has the gang stuff. Maybe you need to cut a third episode in so it doesn't dominate the episodes its in, I dunno. I don't see the point to the character at all.
We should've seen Maya and Alejandro only in newspapers and on telly, continually in the background, being warned of these "two Mexican murders making their way into the US". And the first time we see them in the flesh, is when Sylar calls Mohinder and asks him to come see them... ****ing scary. I always felt it was a mistake to bring Sylar back so soon. He should've been missing until #8, as late as possible. His 'return' doesn't mean much if he's only gone for an episode.
Meh - virtually everything could've been sped up. The only thing that I think played out fine, was Hiro in 1671, and the only reason that took so long was because of all the other plot lines demanding attention.
Some of this episode was fine, but it really feels like a "we've been treading water for several episodes, let's just do something" as opposed to the near clockwork precision of the previous episode or the "Save the Cheerleader" or "Exploding Man" storylines. It's weird - every "resolution" episode (Nightmare-Man, Bennet's painting) so far has been awesome, but this... this week just wasn't that good. It was a big cocktease.
