Harry Potter Discussion (spoilers)

Notice how the American cover is like a reversed version of the American cover for Sorceror's Stone? That's pretty cool.

In other news, word on the street is that the covers and design schemes for the British/Canadian editions of the HP books kick absolute *** compared to the boring, cartoony american ones. And by "word on the street" I mean "in my opinion". And by "in my opinion" I mean "in my correct opinion".

Ugh. I hate the British covers.

Out of curiosity, how many of the books did you read, and did you read them before or after you saw the films?

I've read them all, and seen all of the films. Read the books before I saw the movies. I don't really know what one has to do with the other, but the series never stood out for me.

A spot of speculation:

I was just reading some of the tidbits about book seven that Ms. Rowling has let out, and just wanted to toss some ideas out there.

1. Dumbledore's Ancestry and Family will be explored. There's a little to suggest he's somehow related to the Weasleys, but I think that that's most likely complete bull****. Many believe him to be the descendent of Gryffindor or Merlin... But I still believe Harry to be the descendent of Gryffindor...

2. Sirius' two-way mirror communicator and flying motorcycle will play a role in the next book. Since Harry has not passed apparition, I bet you the motorcycle will be a primary means of transport as he seeks out the other horcruxes across the english isles and very possibly beyond. The Mirrors I think will be Harry's way to communicate with the order, or possibly even Ron and Hermione. One thing that I definitely noticed was that Harry was very much emotionally unresponsive at the end of the last book, so I think he's going to need to learn what love is for himself so that he can defeat Voldemort. That theme is too important not to play a major role in the final book... I sort of see him getting more and more distant, dressing more like sirius as he flies his motorcycle getting clues on his own as Hermione and Ron do research about this and that from 12 Grimmauld Place. I bet that it'll be Ginny who brings him back to himself and shows him the strength of love somehow giving him the power to destroy Voldemort.

3. We still haven't heard anything about Dumbledore's will, and I gaurentee there will be some things he leaves to Harry... For one, I think Harry will get his penseive and various memories instructing Harry about destroying horcruxes... I also think having the penseive will get him to look at more of Lupin's memories about Snape, revealing the fact that he was in love with Lily... I've mentioned that theory before, Snape defected to Dumbledore's side the second he endangered Lily's life... He hates Harry because Harry has the spitting image of his father, but his mother's eyes, which is important because there have been a few times where Snape has stared into Harry's eyes, thinking. Honestly, I think Snape's going to find a way to get in touch with Harry, perhaps sending him important memories...

4. The final showdown HAS to happen at Hogwarts. Half-Blood Prince cemented the importance of the school to Voldemort and even highlighted the fact that harry and voldemort had that in common. I also have this great image of the entire school readying itself for battle... Death Eaters, Giants, Werewolves, Imperi, and Dementors marching on the Castle, The Order of the Pheonix at the forefront of the battle, but also the House Elves, the Students, Hagrid, Grawp... Perhaps the Centaurs and even the Giant Squid could take a few out. I can picture it all coming down to this... I see Draco and Lucius versus Ron and Arthur Weasley... I see Lupin and Bill (and perhaps even a more Veelaesque Fleur) versus Fenrir Greyback... I really hope I'm right about this...

5. Harry is the final Horcrux... His scar at least... But honestly it makes the most sense. If not, its some artifact left in Godric's Hollow, probably created with the death of James Potter, perhaps a relic of Gryffindor. Nagini is CLEARLY a Red herring, as Voldemort would have never used the death of someone so trivial as the guy who worked on the old Riddle Mansion. Also: People need to stop saying there are Seven Horcruxes, when there are only six, with the seventh piece of his soul resting within his body. The others are/were the locket (possibly the unopenable locket found in the Black house, particularly if RAB is Regulus, which seems to be the consensus.), The cup of Hufflepuff, the destroyed diary, the disenchanted ring, and then two mystery objects. Nagini, as I said, i think is a red herring, but I bet he found something Ravenclawy, perhaps with some connection to Luna Lovegood. But I do think Harry is the real deal... Harry's connection to Voldemort throughout the series, particularly in book five, seems almost as if a part of Voldemort's soul was a part of Harry...

6. Deathly Hallows means Dead Saints, AKA Dead people who will help Harry somehow from beyond the grave... Sirius and Regulas Black, Dumbledore, and perhaps even Harry's Parents... All through memories and whatnot... I think that will be a major theme in the book, but I dont think any of them will be coming back in any real sense... What they left for him after they died will be what helps harry... Anybody think that once Harry comes of age he might inherit some more Family heirlooms?

7. Hermione or Ginny will die... I feel sure it's going to be one of those two

You forgot the Aunt, I bet she still has a role to play somewhere. Maybe holding on to something for the past few years, waiting to give it to Harry when he is lof legal wizard age

See, you think Nagini is the Red Herring, I feel Harry is the Red Herring. We'll find out who's right soon enough.

Your other ideas are solid, except for the deaths. I think there's going to be more than one important death in the storyline, and if Hermonie dies, thne I bet Ron's going with her in a blaze of glory.

I also see Draco turning on Voldemort at some point, helping out Harry, redeeming himself throughout all these books with a sacrifice.

Hagrid is going to take that motorcycle and run over a couple Death Eaters with it. Or something like that. I'm expecting that motorcycle to used in a "Grindhouse" moment.

Also, I'm certain that at least one of the Horcruxes is in Gringotts. I'm sure Voldemort, like any good villain, apprechiates the irony of having your enimies do your work for you. Plus, the UK cover looks just like the vaults. I'm expecting Ocean's Eleven. With magic and dragons.

Also, I think Lily worked at Gringotts. Possibly helped build the vault the horcruxes are in. Harry could learn this at Bill's wedding from Bill...and maybe the key to the vault is a magical version of those eye scanners...that's why Harry's eyes are so important.

Also, I'm hoping that the snake that Harry freed in the first book from the zoo returns. I just like him :D

Thought I'd revive this guy, due to the fact that the book is soon on its way to our bookshelves...

I actually just caught up with your theories, Strangefate, and I've gotta tell you - all of them sound absurdly accurate to what COULD happen. Especially your explanation that Snape was in love with Lily and everything... That would be a really well-crafted twist... Although, I would love for Snape to remain a villain... It would make the sixth book stand out so much more if that were to happen. I mean, "Half Blood Prince" showed real, wholesome development in the series... Snape turned on Dumbledore and eventually axed him, Malfoy was put in a dangerous position that his ego could not withstand, and Harry was given the knowledge of the Horcruxes... Which is the one thing he needs to know to defeat his adversary. Anyway... Yeah. I like where your head is at. Nice.

I'm almost through with the sixth book -- only my second time reading it!!! -- and, of course, I'm liking it a lot better this time around; it's probably in my top 3 or 2 of the Potter books.

There's a good chance that I'll be home alone the night that Deathly Hallows comes out, so I'm going to invite a friend over for the night. We'll camp out at the bookstore around 9, 9:30 -- where it's 40% off!! -- and walk home around 12:15, 12:30. Then I'll do something I've never done before.

I'll stay up all night reading, and shut myself in the house for the weekend so that I can finish it without any possible spoilers headed my way (I was spoiled by others about both Sirius and Dumbledore), except for the times where I'll walk around the block, reading on the go. Of course I'll stop for meals, but I really shouldn't use the internet or read a paper in any shape or form until I finish, which I'm guessing will probably be sometime on Sunday -- I'm not gonna read straight through entirely, I've got ADHD god damn it! :)

Under no circumstances am I going to read the book in less than a week or two. It's the last one. I'd strecth it out for months if I could.

Still, though, I not going to use the net during this time. It'll be hard but it's not as bad as having stuff spoiled.

On another note, is there any food people here traditionally eat while reading the HP books? I developed the habit of slowly gnawing down Black Licorice "Pipes" back when I happened to have a bunch of them when I was reading OOTP. I've made a point to get some with both subsequent re-readings of it and when I read Half-Blood Prince. Mmmm.... can't wait to start reading it again leading up to the 21st!

I agree with you... sort of.

I am in no way the sort of person who gobbles up every new book like they're stuffing food into their mouths on Thanksgiving. The shortest it's ever took me to finish one of the books was six days, with HBP, because I was at camp that week, and by Monday, it's third day of release, everyone there had finished it and were eager to talk about it with everybody, and there were only about 20 kids at the camp. (Theater.)

When I read it this time, just like with all the previous ones, I'm going to take it really slowly, making sure I take in everything and understand it all, and letting every big paragraph sit with me for a little before I read on. That said, I still think I could finish it by Sunday/Monday. :)

Voldemort's plan in the fourth book is ****ing genius.

I used to think it was way too complicated--just have the fake Moody Stun Harry, drag him to Hogsmeade, and Apparate away with him. Don't **** around with all this stuff. But then I realized its true genius.

All the members of the Order in the fifth book were saying that Voldemort didn't want Dumbledore to know he was back. They were wrong.

Imagine it. At his moment of triumph, Harry disappears. He's snatched away from under Dumbledore's nose. Not only that, but he was being watched and protected by the Ministry, by the Auror Moody, by Karkaroff, by Maxime... none of these people, the most powerful wizards in Europe, were able to prevent it. All the students, impressionable young minds, will receive the lesson that if Voldemort wants you, there is no one on the planet who can protect you, no one. The foreign students will spread this message of fear across Europe. A new generation will grow up believing that Voldemort is more powerful than Dumbledore and the Ministry combined.

Maybe he would keep the Triwizard Cup and the corpses, or maybe he would send one or both of them back. It depends on his plans. He could keep the Triwizard Cup, keep his resurrection secret for a while, then use it as proof that he was victorious when he re-emerges in wizarding society. I think he would've kept it, just as a little trophy for himself, something he could look at and smile as he recalled the way Harry died in front of him and his greatest victory over Albus Dumbledore. If he wanted everyone to know he was back, he could send back the corpses with an enchantment to make the Dark Mark appear over them. No matter what he did, Fudge is clearly too stupid to start to move against him, but Dumbledore would read the signs and immediately begin to reinstate the Order.

And when he did, Moody would be there, hearing who all the members were, hearing what their missions were, and getting one of his own. Dumbledore trusts Moody. But as we all know, it wasn't really Moody.

That same night, his newly reassembled Death Eaters would visit everyone who was given orders. Hagrid and Madame Maxime would've been cut off before they could reach the giants, the Death Eaters would visit the Weasley house with only Bill and Mr. Weasley to fight them off, they would've known Snape was acting on Dumbledore's orders, they would've trailed behind Sirius and killed everyone he visited after he'd left... a few probably would've been left alive, mostly under the Imperius curse or closely watched. The real Moody would've been killed and his body left wherever it was that he had been sent on his mission. That way, people might not be able to figure out how Harry was taken, increasing fear and paranoia. Before it was even assembled, the Order of the Phoenix would've been nearly wiped out. Depending on how secret he wanted to keep his return, he could've left the Dark Mark over their homes or made it look like an accident. I think he would've tried to keep it quiet, because he operated very quietly in the fifth book.

That last stage still could've been carried out, if Crouch Jr. weren't such a ****tard. Plus, Harry's surviving makes Voldemort's grand return not look so great. "And for my first act, I shall fail to kill a fourteen year old boy!" But basically, it was a very good plan.

That's why Book 4 is my favourite.

I really need to read Book 6 again. I can't remember much about it.

Words cannot describe HOW ****ING PISSED I am right now.

I had heard in last week's paper that there was supposedly some guy who hacked the publisher's computer and got the seventh book early, and so I have been avoiding spoilers like the plague.

Then, whaddaya know, I'm watching the Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest, and as one of the contestants walks out, he holds up a sign with THE ****ING DEATH SPOILERS FROM BOOK SEVEN.

ARRRRRRRGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!
