Dreamcasting #22: The Astonishing X-Men

Well, you see, Oglethorpe is a character on Aqua Teen Hunger Force which is a show on Adult Swim, which also shows Family Guy, which is a TV show on the Fox network which was once cancelled; another cancelled TV show on the Fox network includes Firefly, which starred Nathan Fillion, who was my pick for Cyclops, a member of the AXM.
Nice try, but no.

Nice try, but no.

Ok. Firefly is a show that was cancelled on FOX, as is Family Guy; Family Guy is shown on Adult Swim, Adult Swim shows the program Aqua Teen Hunger Force, one of the characters on Aqua Teen Hunger Force is an alien named Oglethorpe, Oglethorpe was used as an avatar by Bass, Bass is a member of the UC, which holds the Dreamcasting Astonishing X-Men competition.

I did have Oglethorpe for ages. I love that avatar. To be honest, my favourite avatars are this Fillion one, a Superman one (also by Adam) that I loved, and the Oglethorpe.

Cyclops – Eric Johnson – Cyclops is to me at least , the boy scout of the X-men . Eric Johnson seems perfect for that. Plus from his new Flash gordon show people would buy him as the leader of the X-men too.

Emma Frost – Keira Knightley – from Pride & Prejudice to Pirates of the Caribbean I think she handle Emma Frost , She was at one point a rich snob of kinds at least that is my understanding so I picked an actress who can handle that and be a strong female character.

Wolverine – Dougray Scott – I always say Dougray Scott would make a great wolverine and have cast him as such in previous dreamcasting. He could play wolverine I honestly believe almost as good as Hugh Jackman

The Beast – Liam Neeson – Beast himself would be CGI but Liam Neeson's voice , I choice him because he was the only person besides Kelsey Grammar who's voice I could see working on beast.

Colossus – Dolph Lundgren – I know most of his films suck BUT he was good as Ivan Drago the silent but strong Russian which is how I see Colossus been played. I know Dolph Lundgren is older now than before but most of Colossus's fight scenes will be with the cgi metallic version.

Shadowcat – Jamie Lynn Spears I mentioned in the last round I like this actress and when it comes to kitty , I Honestly think that Jamie Lynn Spears is a perfect choice , She has the look and the talent to make kitty really be awesome on screen.

Phoenix – Jennifer Garner – This choice may be an odd one I'm not sure. She just always reminds me of Famke Janssen but slightly better suited for Jean I feel. This is my choice that I am not 100% sure on.

Professor Charles Xavier – Sam Neill – This was a damn hard choice for me , Patrick Stewart IMO IS Charles Xavier , How ever I feel you can't do X-men with-out him. So I picked Sam Neill , I imagine him playing Charles Xavier really well , Different to Patrick Stewart's one but still a strong figure head for the X-men to follow.

Mole....at least you tried.

But I do like the idea of Sam Neil as Xavier. Not too sure I'd use him in my final cast if I was doing it....but still an inspired choice.

And as for Spears........... :noway:

Scott Caan as Cyclops - I'm not sure about this one. Cyclops in Astonishing is a great character. He's cool, intelligent, and a great leader. The problem is that he's in a full body suit most of the time, so the attitude and charm Caan could bring to the role won't really have the full affect if you can't see him. But I think Caan is cool... the only problem is that I'm not sure if he's leader material or would have good chemistry with Emma Frost.

Someone as Emma Frost - I think this is the hardest one to cast. Not only does Emma Frost have to be an ice cold *****, but she also has to be intelligent, sarcastic and a lot more than meets the eye. I can't think of anyone suitable, though I do have quite a few options, but I don't think any are perfect: Maggie Grace (she has the look, but she's too young and she's too American), Melinda Clarke (she has the attitude, but I'm not sure about her all in white)... I'll have to get back this one.

Adam Baldwin as Wolverine - I think I had Baldwin as Logan in the New Avengers cast... I think Bass did too. The thing is, Wolverine is not a main character in Astonishing. He's more of a supporting member of the team. Writers need to learn that he actually works better this way. He's still tough, but he adds the hint of comedic relief that stories always need. Baldwin can do tough and funny, and I would love to see him calling everyone bub and craving a beer.

Powers Boothe as Beast - I'm pretty sure Beast would be mostly CGI, but he still needs a voice. I've been watching Justice League lately, and I really like Gorilla Grodd's voice. It shows that Grodd looks like a beast, but is really quite intelligent. This is the same quality Beast needs to have. Boothe would also add that hint of experienced wisdom that Beast always has.

Someone Else as Colossus - I'm really stuck with this. To the point where I'm going to have to cast an American actor who can play Russian. It's too hard to find someone who's the strong and silent type that fits this role...

Alexis Bledel as Shadowcat - I thought Ellen Page was a pretty good Kitty Pryde, but I'm not allowed to use her. Kitty is the kind of character who's not incredibly sexy; she's timid, quiet, smart and cute. Bledel and the characters she plays are all like this. I think she'd fit.

I personal love the idea of casting Scott Caan. The problem is, is that I can never really think of anything to cast him as. He's too good for throwaway characters....but not strong enough to be the lead. I really gotta find more ways to use him.

As Cyclops? No. Iceman maybe. But not Cyclops.

Scott Summers/Cyclops - Nathan Fillion
Scott is supposed to be in his late 20s / early 30s.

Emma Grace Frost - Sienna Miller
Emma's supposed to be British, and in her late 20s.

James Howlett/Logan/Wolverine - James Purefoy
The actor who plays Logan should be in his late 30s at the youngest, late forties at the oldest.

Henry Philip McCoy/Beast - Ian McShane or William Hurt
Ian McShane might seem a little too old, which is why I've also cast William Hurt in the role.

Piotr Rasputin/Colossus - Ralf Moeller
Ralf Moeller's the huge mother****er on the far right.

Kitty Pryde/Shadowcat - Jena Malone

Ord of the Breakworld - Ray Stevenson

Prof. Charles Francis Xavier - Robert Knepper
This is a more eXtreme Xavier. It's around the time of Astonishing when all of his dirty little secrets come out. So we need a darker portrayal of the character. Just shave his head. Also, I don't think Xavier was originally intended to be British. Patrick Stewart just made him British. But when I read stuff like Ultimate X-Men, I picture Xavier with an American accent.

Points for Ray Stevenson and Sienna Miller. Especially Miller.

But all those points are negated by casting the insuferable Malone.

Cyclops, Scott Summers - Karl Urban

Cyclops is the leader, while still ridden with insecurities. Urban played a similar character in Lord Of The Rings. I'm sure he can pull it off.

The White Queen, Emma Frost - Charlize Theron

I've never been a real fan of Theron, but she is the best option I can think of. She's still not perfect, but she has shown to have a decent range of acting. It's not much of a leap to see her playing the super*****.

Not a very big named actor, he played tough guys in Fast And The Furious, Transporter, and Blade 2. I think he would a fantastic but different Wolverine. I'm sure he could probaly do better than Jackman.

Shadowcat, Kitty Pride - Reigh Leigh Cook

This verison of Kitty is older and more sure of herself. I can her and Theron's Frost having their brutal interactions with each other. Cook is a cute girl that has the ability to bring Kitty alive.

Colossus, Piotr Rasputin - Kevin McKidd

This was the hardest one to cast. I wanted someone big enough but I wanted the russian accent. This guy seems to be perfect. He stars in the HBO series Rome and well as some movies. From what I can tell he can pull of the Russian accent.[/CENTER]

Love the Karl Urban choice. Not the Kevin McKidd. I agree that Cook looks the part....but too bad she's sqwandered her talent away on bull**** films.

Cyclops - Scott Summers - Josh Duhamel
I choose him for his role in Transformers. I've always picture Cyclops as a very militaristic leader, he know strategy and fighting. So I wanted someone to have a commanding presence of a leader. Josh can do that.

The White Queen - Emma Frost - Scarlett Johansson
This one was very tough. It hard to find an actress who can do the cold hearted Emma but still have to be likable, and hot. Even though Scarlett is young I think she can pull off the role.

Wolverine - James "Logan" Howlett - Thomas Jane
I think Jane is the perfect Logan, he's great at playing the tough guy in both serious and funny ways. I was going to have Keifer Sutherland cause imagine the intensity he would bring to the role. Jack Bauer+Healing Factor+Knives coming out of his fists= Awesome. But I do think he could do the calm humorous aspects.

The Beast - Henry "Hank" McCoy - Kevin Spacey
This was a big challenge, I still see Kesley Grammar as the perfect Hank. But Spacey has that intelligent voice and great personality to carry Beast.

Colossus - Piotr Rasputin - russell crowe
This one is the toughest, mainly because I don't know anyone that has the build and accent, I'm disappointed with this choice, buts its really they only name that keeps popping into my head.

Shadowcat - Kitty Pryde - Reiko Aylesworth
I picture Kitty as strong willed, and very oppose to Emma being on the team. Reiko really shows that on 24. This Kitty is a bit older and more mature than her earlier career and I really wanted to keep that character evolution.

I want Duhamel to be in more stuff. And not just because he's a pretty man. But because for some strange reason I like him. Even though he hasn't really done anything too much too impress me. I used him for my Flash.

And I want to do naughty things to Reiko. Mmmmmmmm.....Michelle Dessler. I'll be your Almeida.

Here's my cast

Emma Frost: Charlize Theron
I think she looks and fits the part. She's smart, sassy and attractive and has that thing about her that just completely fits Emma.

Cyclops: Brad Pitt

He is good looking and can easily play a self-righteous douche who can be the fearless leader in the face of adversity. Pitt's my pick and he's around the same age as theron making it believable as a couple.

Kitty Pryde: Natalie Portman
This one was easily castable. Kitty is small. Portman is small. Both are simple people that can become complex and deep in character when the situation calls for it. Portman also has the looks and feature to play kitty.

Wolverine: Thomas Jane
He's played the unrelatable gung ho anti-hero before, and he's only interested in those types and I think he fits the bill for wolverine. He can be the scruffy, tough on the outside but chewy on the inside character that is wolverine and i just don't see anyone better. I tried finding someone shorter but no one came to mind

Beast: Nick Frost
I love Nick Frost and him being Beast would be the coolest. Even if he doesn't quite fit the physique, he'd play well to wolverines cynism and bring that light heartedness the astonishing has at times. He's accent's a little off too and I'm really stretching the possibility here, but I think given the chance, He'd be a great pick.

Colossus: Robert Maillet
This was the guy who played the huge Immortal in 300, the one who got his head chopped off by Leonidus in the heat of battle. He's massive and the one reason i could think of not casting cheesburger eddie. Shave the beard and give him the clean look and you may have the quiet, kept but massively strong Colossus.

Agent Brand: Jordana Brewster
I'm not too familiar with her movie base but with this picture and her hair the way it is, all you'd have to do is slap on some green hair, big shades and a famas and you've got agent brand.

Danger: Kate Blanchett

i'm thinking danger would be robotronic or cgi in some scenes but for voice, I totally see her doing it?

Ord: Benicio DelTorro

This one just kind of came to me. I think it makes sense though. He can play arrogant. He can play tough and superior and even though his accent might throw it off, I think he'd fit Ord pretty well, green skin and all.

I love the Natalie Portman choice more than my own.

Alright. Here's my cast for...

Astonishing X-Men

Matthew Settle - Scott Summers
This was the second hardest part for me to cast, but eventually I remembered Spiers from Band of Brothers. Good, strong leader who seems crazy from time to time. It just seemed to click for me.

Julie Benz – Emma Frost
The way Whedon writes Emma is very similar to the way he wrote Darla. Plus she looks the part. Hot blonde.

Tom Wilkinson – Henry McCoy
Assuming there is some random hump in the suit or that he'd be entirely CGI. Wilkinson would do the voice. Henry always strikes me as intelligent, but soft spoken. If he weren't a big blue cat he'd kind of fade into the background. Wilkinson has the right voice for me.

Mila Kunis – Kitty Pride
Difficult pick. It was made easier when Bass used Amy Acker. Mila looks the part of Kitty and she can do comedy. Go read "Yeahbutwhat?" or any of the catty arguments between Kitty and Emma and tell me she couldn't play this role.

Adam Baldwin - Peter Rasputin
You guys were on the right track by casting Adam Baldwin, but you've got him in the wrong role. Yes he has the acting chops to pull off Logan, but the guy is 6'4". He's not Wolverine. I do think that he could play Piotr though.

Thomas Jane – Logan
I don't care if someone put him up first. I'm picking him too. Rough, gruff and not 6'4". Jane is perfect.

......

I don't hate it.....but I don't really like it either. I really wish I could pick out something in particular....but I can't really.

When you look at the X-Men you need to realize that they are a family. I picked actors and actresses that could work well together and act like a tight-nit group of heroes. I tried not to pick any actors who are overtly blockbuster actors so thy won't overshadow each other in their efforts.

Cyclops- Casey Affleck
Ug, this one was hard. After reading Whedon's run on the comic I've come to realize that Cyclops wasn't this all-star uber-confident leader. Cyclops is much more of a loser than he seems. He's conflicted and doesn't know what the hell to do with his life. Unlike his brother, Casey Affleck is an actor who can show his conflicted feelings and thoughts on the screen. I picture him conming of age in this film somewhat and showing his true heroic colors.

Wolverine- Gerard Butler
Wolverine's a frigging psycho who has a penchant for draining beer. Gerard Butler, there you go.

Shadowcat- Nora Zehetner
Kitty's the POV of the movie. Like someone said, she's the polar opposite of Emma. Nora Zehetner is a real sweet girl who can pull of shades of hardcore.

Beast- Clancy Brown
Oh yeah. I take casting the Beast very seriously. Clancy Brown does no wrong and he'd be perfect as the voice of the Beast.

Emma Frost- Ali Larter
Now when you think of Emma one word comes to mind, *****. From playing her deeply dark side of Jessica in Heroes I think Ali Larter can play the White Queen to a tee.

Colossus- Kevin Durand
Colossus really doesn't have to speak up much. He kind of just stands in the background. But I think that Durand can pull off the Russian accent (I've seen him have a French one) and play off of Nora well. Plus he's 6'6 so that helps.

Phoenix- Amy Adams
Jean won't have too much impact in the film but only to serve as a reminder for Cyclops that he's not good enough. Phoenix is also very much unlike Emma, and therefore has to have a soft side. Adams is very bubbly and I really can see her being Scott's highschool sweetheart. Oh and Dark Knight wants me to mention that he suggested this to me.

Ord- Chow-Yun Fat
I see Ord as an intergalactic dictator who comes to kill Colossus. He happens to be a dictator of the worst imaginable place ever. Though he isn't in charge but Kruun is, I'd see Ord as the most powerful of the Breakworld in the film. Chow-Yun Fat might not be as much of a thug as Ord, but the man can act. I see Fat as that tyrannical dictator who comes to Earth.

Cassandra Nova- Glenn Close

The scariest villain the X-Men would face, Cassandra Nova preys on the insecurities of the X-Men. Shave Glenn Close's head and you've got one scary villainess.

Danger- Kate Blanchett
Danger doesn't have to be inherently evil, but more of a sophisticated, straight-forward machine. There also have to be paings of uselessness when she realizes that she can't possibly kill anyone. Kate Blanchett is a fantastic actress and like in Lord of the Rings she can play off the detached mercilessness of Danger. BTW I didn't realize you had picked this Hibiki, good job!

I'm going to go ahead and say this is my best cast I've ever done so I hope you all like it.

Clancy Brown as anything makes me giddy.

CyclopsPeter Krause – The perennial overachieving leader. Krause definitely has the classic everyman looks to play Cyclops…but it's his dramatic skills from HBO's compound dramatic "Six Feet Under" main lead that proves that he can properly handle Whedon's complex mental deconstruction of the cookie-cutter team leader. Plus look at him…he LOOKS like Cyclops.

Emma Frost Portia De Rossi – The cold queen bee. Frost is a former bad girl gone good…who is still technically bad. Kinda. Deep down we all know that Emma is merely being good because her boyfriend is good. If given the chance, this prissy ***** would turn evil so long as it's convenient to her. It's this snobbish attitude that Portia De Rossi portrays almost constantly. Even in her comedic turn on "Arrested Development" she was the shallow, snobbish, self-centered female. Take that aspect and add her sexy dramatic roles…and you have the perfect demure psychic *****.

Logan Justin Theroux – Savage. Primal. Compact. These 3 words describe Logan. Not many people are familiar with Theroux. Most only know him from "Charlie's Angels". But look at the intense physical role he played. That's perfect for Wolverine. And remember when Logan was turned into a little English schoolboy? Well Theroux can handle the comedy too. Remember the evil breakdancing DJ in "Zoolander"? Yeah…that's Theroux.

Beast Sean Bean – Beast is the classic secondary character who is integral to the story/team. Essentially he is the collective consciousness and moral compass of the group. Logan will do what's needed. Cyclops will do what he thinks is right. Emma will do whatever she pretty much wants. But it's Beast who holds it together. And what actor properly exudes this quality and could deliver it behind a giant furry blue mask? Bean. He's the perfect dignified character actor. Plus he has that soothing baritone voice. Perfect for a brilliant giant cat. When I see that scene from Astonishing where Beast explains how he broke the feral mental hold with a super ball of yarn…I don't know why…but I see Bean.

Colossus Eric Bana – Big…quiet…and a force to be reckoned with. Bana has already tackled this dignified role twice in "Troy" and "Munich". He's the perfect candidate to play the high physical gentle giant. Bana has the gravitas to switch from nurturing, sweet boyfriend who'll hold you by the big tree in the park and just watch the clouds go by…to quickly go to the battle ready warrior. And…Bana can do accents! It's brilliant. Plus…can't you just see Bana delivering that horrible joke about how he has "dreamed of destroying Breakworld since he was a kid"?

Kitty Sarah Michelle Gellar – This was probably the easiest role to cast. As much as I tiring of seeing the Whendon-verse actors peppered heavily all over these projects…with such diverse actors and so many different projects…it's inevitable to come across an actor/actress who's perfect for the role and just so happens to have been on Whedon's stuff. This would be Gellar. Whedon himself has already said that his Kitty is based on Buffy…or was it Buffy who was based on Kitty? Either way…why mess what the creator has already established? Sweet, sexy, sassy and quippy. How many times have we seen Gellar do this? She could do it with her eyes closed.

Swoon.

Garret Hedlund to play Iceman.

More swoonage.

Doom you conceited prick.

My cast wasn't as bad as people make out

I note you're too intimidated by my cast to review it.

HA! I actually missed that one.

Ok...I like Fillion. I really do. But not as Cyclops. I really wish I had a reason why I don't, but I can't really say. There's something about Fillion that makes me say "Filly. Baby. I love ya. I do really. Ya know who else loves ya? FOX. And even the casting guys say they think you'd make a great Cyclops......buuuuuuuuuut.....they've decided to go in another direction. They're giving the part to Chow Yun Fat."

And Fillion would just look at me and reply with "But but but...he's Chinese?"

And my only response would be "Hey. Baby. I know that. You know that. But those casting idiots are the ones pulling the strings. What can I do? Tell ya what. Lemme talk to FOX. I hear they wanna do a new 'I Love Lucy' sitcom remake. I'm trying to get you the part of Ricky."

So no to Fillion.

And I don't like Jeri Ryan. At all. In anything. So I can't in good conscience cast her as Emma.

And Baldwin would actually be a good choice. If he weren't so tall. But I guess they could do a Hobbit move and have him do his stuff via green screen and then later superimpose him in the film with his size reduced.

Can't really say too much about Beast. I'm familiar with the actor...but not enough to really say whether or not this is a good casting choice.

As for Welling? No. No no no no no no no no no no no no. No. At all. I don't want Tom Welling getting anymore work in Hollywood. Ever. Not even as an actual waiter in some ****ing coffee joint. No.

Acker....I'd pass as well. Mostly because I didn't really like her as Fred. And try as I might to not be biased....I just can't help it.

You have some really great choices for your villains though. Like almost all of them are perfect. But your main cast is too Whedon heavy. And you'd think that something like that would be perfect for a Whedon-scripted project.....but instead I find it too complacent. You're not getting enough diversity. Your characters fall into the groove too easy and the next thing you know you've Fillion and Baldwin interacting with each other and instead of Cyclops and Wolverine....you've got them falling victim to old habits and now I'm looking and Mal and Jayne.

My cast wasn't as bad as people make out

Mole your cast wasn't bad. But IMO it wasn't that good either. I just think you've got a lot of miscastings. But....by that right, the same could be said about my cast as well.

Sweet doom said nothing about my bad about my cast. That's a good thing i hope. I don't think it's too bad for my first time. *cherry pop!*

Colossus and beast were the hardest and i don't think there's anyone tough enough to play wolverine in hollywood, even jackman with his broadway dancing face. I was thinking the vinster but that would be generic but his attitude he has in other movies fits well and im still not sure about the thomas jane pick. The only ones I'm 100% on are kitty and emma.

blah blah blah

Jackman was the talest looking guy in the X-films. Wolverine always looks stupid at 5'3".

And you're wrong about everything except how my villain's are awesome.

Also, you doubleplus suck for not mentioning anything about my Xavier choice.

I would have cast Kurt Russel as Wolverine

he's not exactly right for the part (him as cable would work) but it would be awesome

How about:

The UC AXM Version!!

Cyclops - Scott Summers (Ultimate Houde)

-Houde can have the uptightness and leadership that Cyclops has. "Saturday we're running an all day drill!"

The White Queen - Emma Frost (TwilightEl)

-Who else has the toughness and attitude to play Emma? No one.

Wolverine - James "Logan" Howlett (ProjectX2)

- Piss him off, and he'll do what he does best. Ban your ***.

The Beast - Henry "Hank" McCoy (Bluebeast)

-They're both blue, and they're both called Beast. 'Nuff said.

Colossus - Piotr Rasputin (Dr. Strangefate)

-I don't know what to say. But he fits.

Shadowcat - Kitty Pryde (Hibiki)

- Same. Hibiki just seems to fit this role. And she can provide the perfect perkiness to boot.

Phoenix - Jean Grey (Joe Kalicki)

-Why not?

Professor Charles Xavier - (E)

-Leader of the X-Men and founder needs to be played by leader of the UCers and founder. E is....PROFESSOR CHARLES FRANCIS XAVIER!!

Abigail Brand, Director of S.W.O.R.D. (Moonmaster)

- A bad*** person to be played by the bad*** ninja.

Armor - Hisako Ichiki (Ourchair)

-All Asians look alike. That's my reason and I'm sticking to it.

Dr. Kavita Rao (Bass)

-Bass as the sexy doctor? Rawr. :heybaby:

Ord of the Breakworld (VVD)

-True story: VVD was played by Ord. Therefor, VVD is playing himself. Cool, huh?

Danger (Thee Great One)

-TOG as the crazy female bodied robot? Sign him up!

Iceman (Ice)

-Come on. Come on. Come on. I. AM. ICEMAN!

Kruun (McCheese)

-McCheese has the right stuff to be Kruun. Watch out, now. He's waiting to kill you.

Well considering that Cable is Wolverine in the now-piece-of-crap that is Ultimate X-Men, it makes sense.

However, Kurt Russell looks like Cable because he's old - Cable only looks old; he's actually only supposed to be in his thirties, but his hair has always been white.
