Bruce Timm Universe Adoration Thread

I know , but most cartoons do the old oh it just happens randomly or do not explain it well. Batman forever didn't even do it like batman TAS and that was a live action film with no excuse.

I'm not defending the Two-Face from Batman Forever, because he was easily one of the worst things about that film, but the reason why they didn't delve so deeply into his character is because he only existed as a secondary character in that film. They didn't see him as being as important as the Riddler, who was given a fairly decent origin (even if it was more suited to the Mad Hatter or Hugo Strange).

I don't think the joker got an origin properly in Batman TAS I know he didn't in the The Batman.

I think the reason for that was because, similar to the way they didn't go right back to the start and do Batman's origin; they didn't want to retread too much on movie territory. Something similar happened on Spider-Man's animated series a few years later: because there was a movie in the early stages when the first few episodes were being produced, it was decided that the show would not deal with Spidey's origin and also as a general rule of thumb, because they would probably die in the movie (as most comic book villains did at the time), it was decided that Electro and Sandman (who were the planned villains) would not appear in the animated series. Electro eventually made a few appearances toward the end, but Sandman was never used.

The only movie villain in Batman: The Animated Series (at that point) who got a decent origin was Catwoman, and that was partly because they completely (and successfully) revamped her from her stupidly gothic movie counterpart.

So yeah the two face thing was a great surprise

I'd love to just completely forget everything I know about Batman: The Animated Series. Completely block out every episode, every moment, every sound out of my consciousness. Then, I'd go back and read and watch every Batman-related thing ever. That way, I think I'd enjoy BTAS and all the villain revamps a whole lot more.

In other news, I watched Superman: Doomsday today. I didn't think it was all it was cracked up to be, unfortunately. I wanted a Superman version of the Mask of the Phantasm that totally retooled the sub-par Superman animated series, and instead, all I got was a reasonably decent 90-minute episode, complete with nods galore to the 90s episodes and the DCAU in general.

The special feature documentary "Requiem and Rebirth" or whatever it's called was excellent and only served to further my belief that the "Death of" trilogy in the comics is entirely under-rated and is a perfect send-off to the Byrne-style Superman (even though Byrne had nothing to do with the project). After that trilogy, Superman just became mindless, ***-kicking, 90sman.

I think my biggest problem (especially after watching the documentary) was that the film focused too strongly on the mindless action and dull exposition of Superman dying and Superman coming back to life, rather than focusing on what Superman meant to the world. A lot of people forget that the events that followed The Death of Superman weren't dark or bleak at all, they were some of the most star-spangled, feel-good, Christopher Reevey Superman stories ever and in that respect, I think this movie should have been a lot brighter and should have been called "Superman Lives!" rather than "Superman: Doomsday".

Lastly, I think the violence was wholly over-rated. Everyone kept going on about the blood and all that; but really there's only one bit where Superman coughs up a bit of blood and if you blink, you might even miss it. Also, there's some badish language forced into the film, which also annoyed me. They say "frickin" a few times and Perry White very uncharacteristically throws in an "***" here and there, but it never really seemed like things people would actually say. Maybe it was just because it was an animated feature, I don't know.

Anyway, overall, I'd give this film a 6.5/10. I'd say that my reaction to this film is similar to Planet-Man's reaction to Superman Returns: pretty good, but not as good as it should or could have been.

Your right on the origins thing

her stupidly gothic movie counterpart.

I liked returns catwoman

I didn't read everything and a lot of characters I had not read about when I saw them but still loved it. I mentioned earlier in this thread that my main reason for preferring it over say JLU was the way it was executed.

Batman : TAS , it had a perfect soundtrack to accompany the action in a way that together fused to make it more Oprea like. It's just beautiful , It's almost like Fantasia in way.

Then as well as the Beauty from that you have the depth and somewhat complex story with things like Two Face and Mr Freeze , The voice acting was perfect e.g Mark Hamill IS the joker as far as animated series goes.

Now I am in no way saying the other Timmverse stuff like JLU are bad as they are not I love them , But JLU had the action , it had some of the story but not as much but that's due to the big roster it's harder to explore every character right.

Batman however had the action , had the story , had the beauty in way I've still not seen an animated show pull off. It was just perfect. Even as a kid when it was on tv I was blown away and wished more cartoons had been like it.

Plus it gets bonus points for creating charracters like Harley Quinn and other such things that actually changed or at least influenced the comics in way that is just great.

Now days with The Batman , it's fun sure but I feel kids are missing out on what a truly inspirational and breathtaking cartoon Batman can be with the right writers , voices and music people.

I have Batman TAS on dvd and when my little nephew grows up a bit more and if I ever have a son THAT will be the batman cartoon I show them and even today I still think it's as good meaning it's not aged that to me says it all.

I cannot stand Batman Returns' Catwoman. I understand it was Burton's show and that film was all about revamping villains that he never quite understood, but in my opinion, Catwoman should never be about tearing up your apartment and completely losing the plot. Catwoman isn't a psycho-killer; she's a fun-loving, carefree adventurer. Now that I think of it, I don't think I like her as a hooker, either. I prefer her as a bored socialite who decided to stop living life the way everyone else says you're supposed to (pretty much the BTAS/TNBA version).

The more I watch BTAS, even as the years go by and I re-watch and re-watch; the more it becomes apparent that it's just...perfect. There's so very little about it that I don't like. And I totally agree about the execution of the show. JLU is great because it's about long, branching story arcs, funny human interaction between larger than life characters and brilliant, brilliant action. But it is sorely lacking in the style that BTAS had. I don't fault it for that, though, because I don't think JLU would have worked in that style, the way BTAS did. Nevertheless, I would count BTAS as being better than JLU, purely on a stylistic basis.

I watched On Leather Wings the other day. There's this scene where Batman climbs into the Batmobile and races out of the batcave along that narrow bridge, and then out of the descending ramp. A close-up is shown on the Batmobile's chassis as the Shirley Walker Batman theme booms in the background for the very first time.

"HOW IN THE NAME OF ALL THAT IS GOOD IN THE WORLD DID THEY GO FROM THIS TO THE PIECE OF **** THEY HAVE NOW??!?!!"

It's one of those things that has flaws that only serve to make it better and Bruce Timm agrees with me. All the dirt and grain and animation errors (of which there are several) that show up on the DVDs (especially in the older episodes) only further serve to make the show look like a Fleischer-esque masterpiece.

Oh yeah, I finally bought Mask of the Phantasm on DVD yesterday, after enduring years of only having it on VHS. Bit disappointed by it, really. Since it's arguably one of the best and most definitive pieces of DCAU (next to the Cadmus Arc in JLU and several BTAS two-parters) it seems surprising that they never made a Special Edition DVD.

I would find it completely amusing if they produced a special edition DVD that presented the events of Phantasm in chronological order. Granted, that kills the dramatic strength of the whole thing, but it'd be an interesting sight to see it without flashback ripples.

WTF?!

Not often I say that, but I felt the situation warranted its use. Anyway, if that's what you'd enjoy, then fair enough. Can't understand it, myself.

I think you've got me wrong. I'm not faulting the movie at all. I love it to pieces.

I just think it would be perversely amusing to re-arrange the scenes in chronological order, in the same way one has the option to see Memento in chronological order: it abnegates the point of the experience, but is interesting nonetheless.

So today I almost laughed like crazy in an awkward setting thinking about when Flash and Luthor switched bodies and this happens:

"Aren't you going to wash your hands?"

"No... Cause I'm evil."

Not the first time I've heard of someone laughing their *** off at this joke. I didn't think it was all that. I loved it when Flash tricked the villains into ''reminding'' him of ''his''evil plan.

I still quote Jeffrey Combs' The Question as much as I can.

"Aha! Just as I suspected. Thirty-two flavors."

God the Question is great.

The tips at the end of shoelaces are called "aglets". Their true purpose is sinister.

Huntress: [over the phone] So, what are you wearing?
The Question: Blue overcoat. Fedora.
Huntress: [frowning] You really stink at this.
The Question: Orange socks?

Imagine how great it would have been if they had spun an Outsiders show out of this starring the Question. But who would be on the roster. I think it would work best to have Question, Huntress, Nightwing, Metamorpho, Geo-Force, Arsenal, and maybe Katanna. Wow that would be great.

I plan on picking up a few seasons of Bats and Supes on DVD later this week, maybe with Mask of the Phantasm and Return of the Joker. I figure I'll watch them in order of release (Bats, Supes, Bats Beyond, TT, JL, JLU). Until then, though, I'm probably going to download a few Bats and Supes episodes to satiate my appetite. I've also been watching the Gotham Girls shorts which are surprisingly fun.

It's been so long since I've watched any of the Timmverse cartoons. I feel like I've been depriving myself.

Also, does anyone else view the DCAU as basically "Ultimate DC"? While it isn't really a contemporary look at the characters, there are a number of revamps and the shows are really iconic, possibly moreso than a lot of what DC has produced in the last twenty years. It's easily my favorite incarnation of the DC universe.

i love Gotham Girls

It's quite good.

I also like it because I'm a defacto fan of Harley Quinn. My ex was a huge fan of her (And, in fact, dressed up as her for a convention and Halloween) and the girl I'm currently chasing is also a huge fan of her and has also dressed up as her numerous times. It's become a running joke with my friends that the two conditions a girl needs to meet before I date them is 1) they have red hair and 2) are fans of Harley Quinn.
