Batman: The Brave and the Bold (series discussion)

Re: New Batman Animated Series to Air on Cartoon Network

Batman's had probably more interpretations than any other character. He spent a good chunk of his life as something you don't enjoy, but it's wrong to say it didn't exist and it wasn't successful and isn't entirely valid. Spider-Man never had that.

Why can't Batman stay evolved? Why does he have to go back to his other intrepretations all the time?

Batman was created to sell comic books to kids. It was a kids' medium, he was a character for kids.

I'd jump up and down like a schoolgirl if they made a cartoon based on what Batman was like when he was created.

I don't think you're being completely fair, there, Gothamite. As Joe said, there've been many interpretations of the character, and even though I personally have no interest in this incarnation (much like yourself), I can understand why others do.

We've gotten the more modern, post 80's incarnation in multiple incarnations across multiple media sources (movies, tv shows, comics, video games, etc). And we'll certainly get a lot more in the future.

I don't think the same can be said of the "Silver Age" type Batman character that seems to be the influence for this cartoon, at least not in recent history. The last time this version of the character had its hey-day was thirty plus years ago.

I think it at least deserves a shot to see if the audiences of today will be as entertained by the Silver Age version as opposed to the modern version of Batman most people know so well.

I have no interest in it, but I wish it well.

In his early, Bob Kane penned days, didn't Batman use a gun? I can't remember specifically, but I thought that was the case.

Re: New Batman Animated Series to Air on Cartoon Network

Yep. He did only full-on use a gun once, though. Most of the time, he just threw villains off of buildings, though. Who wouldn't want to see a children's cartoon where he threw gangsters off of buildings? It would be awesome!

Re: New Batman Animated Series to Air on Cartoon Network

Batman hasn't "evolved". Batman works equally well as the innocent child-friendly bat-themed vigilante in bright spandex as he does the more realistic, darker knight. But neither is better. One can be executed better than the other, one can be preferred to the other, but neither is inherently better.

Superman for example, works as wonderfully whether he's an alien roaming the bizarre worlds of shrunken cities and sun-eaters, or when he's a fanciful hero who can change the course of mighty rivers and deals with environmental problems. :)

Nice to see some of that in TDK, then. Poor Maroni's knees. *ouch*

You're such a ****ing know-it-all. No wonder you never get laid...

...except when Moony's in town.

Or if he is just a dick you gets off on denying people water

Re: New Batman Animated Series to Air on Cartoon Network

I won't say anything other than that I am in no position to say what Batman should be portrayed as. That's all I'll disclose.

I'm ****ing sick of this thread. It's the same thing over and over again.

Re: New Batman Animated Series to Air on Cartoon Network

Batman went from being a violent, stock pulp vigilante with a gun and no subtext; to being a colorful and goofy crimefighter with a sidekick and no subtext; to being a sci-fi hero; to having Denny O'Neil inject the original version of the character with actual purpose and depth; to having Frank Miller's Batman hammered on us for twenty years.

Bass is right. They're all valid. But the "original" Batman wasn't particularly deep, or very unique for that matter. It's just retrospectively that we add that depth.

Re: New Batman Animated Series to Air on Cartoon Network

I don't know, I think Batman should be a robot from the future. And a woman. Who likes to **** goats.

Re: New Batman Animated Series to Air on Cartoon Network

Everyone should know it hasn't been cool to post drunk since the time MWoF vomited in the social thread and I had to clean it up.

Re: New Batman Animated Series to Air on Cartoon Network

Word is that Tom Kenny (voice of Spongebob Squarepants and Starscream in the new Transformers cartoon) is voicing Plastic Man.

Pitch-perfect casting, there.

I love the guy holding up the cup in the second pic. It's like he's begging for superman to ***** slap the cup from his hand to say,"No Water!"

I actually have that issue. I think his justification was that the water supply had been poisoned.

Superman...The Water Nazi.

Definitly beats Seinfeld's Soup Nazi.

I'd totally love to see an Elseworlds mini written by Garth Ennis where Superman takes advantage of his powers and is just a complete *******. That'd be great.

I think "Superman's a Dick" should be occupy a universe in the multiverse.

The premise of the universe isn't that Superman's, like, an authoritarian dictator or some militaristic *******. He's just.... sort of a douchebag. And he just flies around, making **** difficult for people. Because it amuses him.

Thats exactly what I mean. He should constantly be giving Super-wedgies to Jimmy and snapping Lois' bras with his super strength. Maybe even shaving Lex's pubes and then gluing them onto his upper lip.

Like Biff Tannen, but worse.

Stuff like that would get my $3 every month for sure.

Hell yeah. Sounds like a series deserving the title All-Star Superman.

Do you read The Boys? Because that may fill part of your Superdickery fix.

O'Doyle rules!

Actually, I haven't read the past couple arcs. I have the first trade, been meaning to pick up the second (though I read that in single issues). Haven't read past that. Fully plan to, though.

But I'm thinking along the lines of slightly less adult-themed. Superman as more of your innocent, high-school bully with super-powers as opposed to the extreme sex and violence kick of The Boys (which I love). I don't want to see Douchbag-Superman punch through people's chests o anally rape Lois with a corn-cob from Pa Kent's fields. I just want him to get off annoying and ****ing with people in a disturbing and jerkish manner, but non-lethal: wedgies, the gluing pubes to face thing, forced head shaving, playing pranks on other Super-heros (its not like they can do a damn thing about it).

He's not a killer, just a douche-bag, you know? It'd sort of be a blend of the tone of the comic covers above, with a little more adult type humor thrown in (just nowhere near the level of the Boys).

Thats how I'm envisioning this cash-cow, anyway.

Speaking of which, I think Moonmaster should write it if Ennis isn't available or willing.
