24- The Bauer Power Hour series discussion (spoilers)

Re: 24- The Bauer Hour series discussion (spoilers)

Here is a link to Stephen King's review of the new season of 24, which he's seen (I think) the first four hours of. I haven't read it yet, but I don't think there'd be too too many spoilers.

Re: 24- The Bauer Hour series discussion (spoilers)

Most viewers of 24 will want to know one thing above all others: Is the upcoming season of Fox's groundbreaking experiment in serial TV (father of Lost, grandpappy of Heroes and Jericho) as good as last year? Let me put it to you this way: There are more thrills and suspense in the first four hours than most series can pack into a single season. Or an entire run of show, for that matter.

Wow. The reviewer comes off REALLY bad from the start. I'm all for excitement in 24, but to give it credit for spawning those other shows is SO wrong. It makes the reviewer sound like they never watched TV before 24. Is there ANYONE here who CAN'T give a sample of successful serial TV that predates 24? Anyone at all? I would agree that Lost begat Heroes, but what REALLY begat Lost? Nothing comes readily to mind. That's an example of a man with a lot of clout from a past success trying out a new idea he had. (As many of you probably know, the ABC producer who greenlighted Lost was fired for doing so.) And how many Lost ripoffs came out this season? And how many survived? WHY did they die? Because they clearly didn't understand what makes Lost good, which should have been painfully obvious before they even bothered filming their ripoffs.

But back to 24. HAS there been anything else that was actually similar to it? I think Vanished took a shot at it, but they really shot themselves in the foot with that one. The DaVinci Code angle they had was what really made that show worth watching... and they waited far too long to include it in the series. By the time they got around to trotting out the good stuff, everyone had already become bored and turned the show off.

So when you boil it down, what makes 24 work? A great lead character. A real cliffhanger at the end of every episode. A real sense that anything can happen and that no one is safe.

No one but Jack Bauer.

Edit:

This is probably already on the 24 site, but Yahoo! TV has some clips, a music video, and more on 24.

While none come to mind (I'm really not much of a TV watcher myself), Lost does owe at least some of its success to 24. 24 may not have invented serialized television action/drama, but it is one of the major factors in the new popularity of the genre. The man who green-lit Lost may have had a different reaction to the proposal if 24 hadn't been so successful in its first few seasons.

No one is saying that Lost is a ripoff of 24. However, the idea that Lost could have succeeded without 24's popularity is ludicrous

 You've never heard of Stephen King before?

I know there's more than one Stephen King in the entertainment industry, but I don't really know if this is the horror writer or not. Is it? *shrug* I find his books to be pretty dull, but I know they're immensely popular.

Off of the top of my head, Dallas is an example of a previous successful serial TV show. *shrug*

I'm not sure I see 24 as leading to Lost's success. Survivor's popularity is what got the ball rolling with Lost. Alias' popularity is what got Abrams the job of creating the show.

According to Wikipedia, there is only one major Stephen King in the entertainment industry. I'm curious to know which books of his you've read.

I never said that 24 invented the television serial, only that it played a major role in revitalizing its popularity. Dallas was in 1978 and followed an episode structure unlike 24 or LOST. While Dallas was, by definition, a serial program, it was more akin to a primetime soap opera than an ongoing story split among a season.

I'm afraid that you do not understand the point I am trying to make. Whatever television shows influenced LOST's storyline are an irrelevant subject, But 24 has had an undeniable affect on television programming. If FOX didn't have 24, what motivation would there have been for the exec at ABC to greenlight a risky, long-term series like LOST? None.

Don't think that LOST owing part of its success to 24 makes it any less of a show; by now it has proven itself to be a well written, acted, and plotted series.

MAJOR? Quite. The other guy I'm thinking of isn't even close to the horror writer's fame, but he has written articles for entertainment news sources before.

What have I read? It's been SO long that I'm not sure I can remember them all but I'll try. Salem's Lot, Night Shift, The Stand, The Dead Zone, Firestarter, Pet Sematary, and The Tommyknockers. I've also seen a number of his movies, which I realize isn't the same thing, but it is relevant as far as what I don't really like about King.

King is good at writing, by which I mean he has a very good command of the English language. He's also good at developing characters. His plots are where the stories fall short for me. Once upon a time, I worked in a bookstore and I just had to shake my head when I'd hear some fan come in to the store and go on and on about King's "bizarre" imagination. Please. The man's not totally lacking, but his ideas aren't that wild at all. I think that has a lot to do with his mass appeal though. He has a LOT of fans who really aren't big readers, thus they really don't even know what else is out there. If you go too far, they'll disconnect from the story. No, not EVERY reader of King's is the lowest common denominator, but that's where the money is so why not make a career of it? I'm not reading much horror any more, but if I had to choose one author who I think does a better job in the genre, I'd go with Dean Koontz. As with any author who has a large body of work, he's written a few yawners, but I would be MUCH more likely to recommend one of his books over King's. Too bad there has YET to be a decent Koontz movie. :)

That's nice and all, but....24.

This is sort of off topic, but I like the thread title. I would go with "The Hour of Bauer Power" because I remember seeing "The Hour of Power" on Sunday mornings.

A big entertainment news today was that the first four episodes (apperantly two hours each) of the new 24 season is already online for download.
Yeah. S&P told me about that. I told him if he watched them I would go to his house and kick him Jay & Silent Bob style.

*shrug* He asked and we don't have anything else to talk about until next week. :)
He also was talking about 24, too. :)

It seems to me that you read the article, and now my post, until you found something to respond to, then disregarded the rest. I'm not trying to attack you, that's just how it seems to me.

A little something to get back on topic..
