I always liked to assume the destruction of the Death Star is what is considered midnight of their New Years.

0BBY is Before Battle of Yavin and 0ABY is After Battle of Yavin

It Is basically the same year but before or After the Battle of yavin. Imagine that you have a birthday you have 2 moments 1 before and 1 After, but in the end It Is the same day.
