Your 5 Favorite Films of 2007 -- Update As You Go

you put Mr bean's holiday above The Simpsons movie? seriously?

Definitely. With The Simpsons Movie, just like the recent episodes of the show, it felt like they were faking their way through a lot of it, putting in stuff they hope mainstreamers will find funny without knowing if it's funny themselves.

With Mr. Bean's Holiday, they just went with their tried and true style and stayed true to Bean and the type of gags he goes with, and since he's funny and that's funny to begin with.... it just worked. I enjoyed the heck out of it.

No it defeats the whole purpose , He was meant to be a zany , wacky , almost cartoon charracter BUT in our world. You do it animated and everyone is a cartoon and so is he and looses the magic

I've never seen the cartoon, but this sounds like it makes complete sense.

That's exactly it, I always have trouble explaining why I hate recent Simpsons

No, it does not. Mole is wrong.

The sheer essence of Bean has NEVER been about him being a 'living cartoon character'. He's not made to go through the same physical feats that Buster Keaton would go through, nor is the character about funny accents and quirky get-ups like Jerry Lewis.

The whole point of the Bean routine is that he thinks like a child --- not in the sense that a child is simple-minded or precocious but in the sense that a child can be selfish and clever --- prone to being completely oblivious to how the world AND society works. Which is why the Bean sketches revolve completely around presenting simple everyday things that a normal person would encounter.

The comedy comes from HOW Bean approaches these tasks --- redecorating, making sandwiches, going to the beach become elaborate puzzles for Bean to figure out, and the result usually involves complete lack of consideration for others, and a petty need to put one over a person or overcome ordinary inconveniences that most NORMAL people put up with.

What the animated series does for the character is that it permits mundane catastrophes larger than a modestly budgeted TV comedy would allow, expanding the range of chaos which Bean's behaviour could possibly cause.

No, it does not. Mole is wrong.

No he's not.

But here Planet-man http://youtube.com/watch?v=R3tnjZ5htCk watch that and try to tell me it's as good as the live action serious.

It's not , It maybe somewhat enjoyable but the series is just not as good , It's like the difference between Ace Venture the movie and Ace Venture the cartoon. Sure the cartoon is fun but it's not half as good as film.

Mr Bean the series has a quality to it , it is like a cartoon person in odd situations , kind of like Faulty towers. It worked it was off beat and just nuts and was very funny because of it.

The cartoon has things like one episode a fridge landed on top of mr bean and gave him the cartoon dazed thing. It works sure if it was anything but Mr bean but instead they moved from the Faulty towers style charm to be like tom & jerry or loney toons and so it's not mr bean.

Same thing I feel about the films. I like the first one BUT admit they are not like series , they try less wacky comedy to the series and feel like a watered down version of mr bean. They also try for story which doesn't work.

The series it came from simple things like Mr Bean paints his room :)lol: fireworks in the paint can = brilliant) I understand why they did this for the film but if making a film of it changes the style it shouldn't be made.

Go back and re-read my post. The argument was NEVER about whether the live-action series is better than the animated one. Degustibus non disputandem.

I have no contention with anyone who would disagree with my assertion that the animated series is 'as brilliant' as the animated series. But if you were paying attention to me saying you were wrong and WHy then you'll realize I was addressing this:

This is where I made my contention.

Bean's 'whole purpose' his comedic essence if you will, is NOT being cartoon-like n our world, nor is any of his 'magic' contingent on his being cartoonier than the world he inhabits.

but that is how this started kinda with

you are clearly daft, my good sir. The animated Bean series is brilliant. I dare say it's just as good as the TV sketches.

This is where I made my contention.

But it is , watch the show , he acts in a cartoon way. It's funny. He acts in a way that if you put in a cartoon he looks no diffrent to say Bugs bunny. You do it live action like he originally was then it's funny.

His humour and the best bit of the show comes from things his over the top reactions that no one does , His reactions and decisions ect... that can be best seen as something a cartoon character would do.

yes he is also like a child in other ways like you mentioned and I wont deny that. But it's just something that he starts out doing an easy thing e.g D.I.Y and before you know it he's done stupid cartoony stuff that gets worse and worse in a snowball effect. E.g D.I.Y he cuts out a hole to fit in his hatch to move the hatch. He messages with pencils , he cuts it out slicing through wires and pictures then slots it in place.

Hopefully you get what I'm saying but if not I'll just agree to disagree Or i'll pull out the "English card" like Americans and Asians on here have in the past with their shows and cartoons/anime ect.. :p

yes. And I dropped that argument several posts ago, on purpose.

And just two posts ago, I quoted it again so that it'd be clear that I had dropped it:

And four posts ago, I responded to Planet-man, who quoted responded to you, and his response quoted you:

Without quoting the part in which you said the cartoon sucked, likely because he had not seen it.

And from this chain of quotery, which I made it a point to go over prior to posting my response to Planet-man, we see that I was pretty much arguing about "Is the magic of Bean his cartoon character-ness?" and NOT "The cartoon does not suck," regardless of the fact that I believe it does not suck.

Are you reading my mind? :D I was smoking just twenty mnutes ago and thought "For someone who claims to be British, Mole sure has such an American interpretation of Mr. Bean"

Actually what i said is how a lot of people here see him , I know as Ironically at work we were having a similar convocation as Mr Bean's Holiday is out on dvd here this monday (29th) and everyone said the same things i've said here

Ironically Most people I know say Bean (the first movie) Mr Bean's holiday and Mr bean (the animated series) as Americanised versions as they are not the same and loose nearly all qualities and Magic of the original series :p

1. No Country For Old Men - 10/10 - The Coen Brothers prove yet again that they are some of the best filmmakers in this business... ****, man, I saw it yesterday and I'm still reeling.

2. Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street - 10/10 - Not quite the classic in the making that NCFOM is, but the single best movie musical I have seen in many years, and probably the best adaptation of the original (my all-time favorite musical) that could have been made.

3. 3:10 To Yuma - 10/10 - This was a fantastic brilliant movie. First Oscar-worthy thing I've really seen this year... The Acting was fantastic. Plus im a little bit in love with the kid.

4. American Gangster - 9.9/10 - Denzel is gonna get the Oscar, and he'll ****ing deserve it. This is the best Mobster movie I've ever seen in theaters, and only ranks behind the first two Godfathers and Goodfellas on my best Mob-Film list... Now I'm going to have to wikipedia the hell out of Frank Lucas.

5. Ratatouille - 9.9/10 - The .1 is knocked off because of the beginning which was a bit weaker than the rest of the film, but the second we got Remy talking to Gusteau and introduced Linguini, the film turned to solid gold. It is going to be hard as HELL to outrank this movie this year.

6. Wristcutters: A Love Story - 9.5/10 - A fantastic quirky film that's heartwarming and so utterly surreal (in a wonderful sort of way), that I look forward to seeing it again.

7. Enchanted - 9.5/10 - The best Disney movie in ages... I couldn't stop smiling when it was over. It's funny and sweet and immensely successful at what it tried to be. My only beef is the lackluster 2D animation, but hopefully this movie will be sucessful enough to bring about a revival of the Walt Disney Feature Animation films (and i mean the traditionally animated kind)... Unless you're too jaded to enjoy a wonderful sweet movie, catch this in theaters ASAP.

8. Zodiac - 8.75/10 - Well constructed, but a bit longer than necessary. The acting was fantastic though, probably the best I've seen so far this year.

9. Juno - 8.75/10 - Ellen Page was great, though the dialogue seemed a bit forced and unnatural at times, I still felt this was a damn good movie worth seeing. Heartwarming and ****ing hilarious.

10. Charlie Wilson's War - 8.5/10 - Aaron Sorkin gives us the usual funny, plus the charming, lovable characters that really make his work brilliant. Where it fails is properly weighing in the impact this little bit of history actually has on the modern day... But that's all secondary. If you only need one reason to see this movie, it's Phillip Seymour Hoffman.

11. Hot Fuzz - 8.5/10 - Fun, Funny, Action-packed. Also: Timothy Dalton is fantastic, and I now want to write movies where I can make him the bad guy.

12. Knocked Up - 8.5/10 - Best comedy i've seen in a long while. I'm knocking it down a bit after rewatching it, just because Hot Fuzz is a better, funnier movie... But Knocked Up still has a lot of heart. AND I love Paul Rudd. Forever.

13. Superbad - 8.5/10 - I can't even properly describe why I liked it... Aside from it being one of the most real High School Movies ever at the same time as being absurd and hilarious. Funnier than I was expecting. By FAR.

14. The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford - 8.5/10 - A beautiful film with fantastic performances, particularly by Brad Pitt as Jesse James... It has its weak points, and drags a bit, but it's still quite a damn good movie

15. Once - 8.5/10 - Not quite the kick in the head of fantasticness that people had me expecting, but still quite good, very touching, and definitely worth seeing, no matter who you are. The music was very good, and the girl was adorable. So... Yup.

16. Sicko - 8.5/10 - Sicko is an important movie, especially if you're an American... Actually, it might only be an important film if you are an American... But if you are, this movie is equally as important a film as An Inconvenient Truth was last year. This movie is about how our country's healthcare system PALES in comparison to EVERY OTHER Western Country... This is an issue that we should make central in 2008... So, yeah. See it if you are American, if not, its not going to mean all that much. (which i deducted .25 for... the other point off is from the films various flaws, but its still a damn good movie)

17. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix - 8.5/10 - The pacing was off for about the first third of the film, and Bellatrix Lestrange was exaggerated into rediculousness... but the feel and the look of the film outdid ANYTHING in the previous movies... By deciding to adapt the book as it should be adapted rather than as defined by the previous movie, we get the best film yet in the series... One that feels like it tells a complete story. And Sirius was awesome... Gary Oldman was simply the most perfect choice for that role.

18. Hairspray - 8.5/10 - Fun, Funny, and put me in a great mood... I love the music, Cyclops rocked as Corny Collins, and even though Zac Efron has soulless demon eyes, it was nice to see that he could sing without them splicing someone else's voice into his. Also: Amanda Bynes was adorable

19. Mr. Brooks - 8/10 - Very good movie... Watched it entirely based off of the suggestion of Planet-Man and other people on the previous page, and it didn't really disapoint... While it was flawed, the greatness shined through in the general idea of the piece and the acting.

20. Elizabeth: The Golden Age - 8/10 - Not quite as excellent as the first, but due to addition of John Dee (a character I felt should have been in the original), and a fantastic performance by Clive Owen, I really enjoyed it. It should have moved into the Spanish Armada stuff much earlier, and let the Mary Queen of Scots stuff run by a bit faster, but I still highly recommend it. But see the original first.

21. The Simpsons Movie - 8/10 - A fun, and suprisingly good escapade with the Simpsons family... I was laughing through the whole thing, but at the end of the day it just felt like a long, high quality episode of the Simpsons, and didn't do much to be something more than that... So it gets a pretty high rating from sheer enjoyability, but not all that much substance.

22. Grindhouse - 8/10 - Lots of fun, it has its weak points, but the sheer enjoyability of Planet Terror, and the newest Tarantino film (which includes what I now consider to be the greatest chase sequence of ALL time)... Death Proof is simply brilliant. I'll see it again if it hits the theaters on its lonesome.

23. Stardust - 8/10 - I love the book so much that this movie could NEVER satisfy what I wanted (a word for word adaptation, including the depressing epilogue), but the more I think about it, the more I think that I need to see it again, because at the end of the movie I was very pleased with it, despite all the things I think it got wrong. It isn't the book, and I think the book is better, but its still a ****ing fantastic movie.

24. Ocean's 13 - 8/10 - Its not quite the quality of the first one... But it's ALMOST up there... The first half of the movie I was really anxious, because it took a WHILE to get going... But when it picked up, it really picked up and I enjoyed the hell out of it... Clooney and Pitt's relationship gives this an extra point, but I might knock it down later in the year.

25. 1408 - 8/10 - Cusack did a damn good job in the movie, without losing his usual Cusackian Charm... My biggest problem with it all is the fact that they never really explain WHY the room was evil. It just was. But a good movie, quite enjoyable.

26. Pirates of the Carribean: At World's End - 8/10 - Satisfying ending to a well executed trilogy. I enjoyed the hell out of it, and I'll happily dish out the money for the next film on the list.

27. Tranformers - 7/10 - Your typical fun summer action popcorn flick. Good Characters, Lots of Fun action, but not much substance.

28. National Treasure: Book of Secrets - 7/10 - Better than the first one, I thought... Easy-going adventure movie... Worth seeing if you come across it on TV down the line, but I wouldn't go seek it out.

29. I Am Legend - 7/10 - This would have been ranked higher than Grindhouse if the movie had kept the pace and feel of the first two thirds of the film... From when the other characters enter the scene, the movie turns into preachy rubbish meant to teach us the meaning of faith and the American spirit. I really enjoyed it, but the ending ruined the whole thing. It felt like two completely different styles of film.

30. 300 - 7/10 - Fun. Good. But the scenes in sparta interspersed with the narrative slows the story... I need to see it again (for the fourth time), but I'm pretty sure that this is where I stand on it. Mostly Good.

31. The Golden Compass - 7/10 - I'm impressed with what they got right (casting, cgi, general design of everything), but the movie lacks all the nuances of the book that made it worthwhile. I'll check out the next one and hope they bring back the religious stuff, because when Ms. Coulter tried to explain that Dust was Original Sin without any mention of the church or the bible, I almost started laughing.

32. Bridge to Terabithia - 7/10 - I must have been a little crazy when I saw this for the first time, because aside from a wonderful performance from the lead female character, the film really isn't as good as it could have/should have been. Good example of childhood nostalgia blurring my eyes to a pretty mediocre film.

33. Across The Universe - 6.5/10 - The newcomer who plays Jude is the reason to see this movie, outside of him (and his ****ing beautiful voice), the plot is entirely unsubstantial, some of the sequences and characters are ENTIRELY unnecessary. It had so much potential, and could have reached it by focusing on character development and keeping the film grounded in realism, rather than being one music video after another. I might pick up a soundtrack, because some of the best covers of Beatles songs that I've ever heard. But that doesn't make it a good movie. Not by a longshot.

34. Fantastic Four: The Rise of the Silver Surfer - 6.5/10 - Had a lot of the flaws of the first, but rectified several of them... Johnny Storm continues to be the strongest aspect of the series, which I absolutely hope continues... My biggest Problem is with Mr. Fantastic, cuz, well... he should seem intelligent.

35. Shrek 3 - 6/10 - Solid Enough... Not as much heart as the first, Not as much funny as the second, but still a the end of the day it was an enjoyable solid movie with fantastic CGI... There's this bit with The Gingerbread Man's life flashing before his eyes that still makes me laugh just thinking about it. Not great, Not Bad. Certainly better than I expected.

36. Spider-Man 3 - 6/10 - The most disapointing film experience I've had all year. This made me cringe so much with what they messed up that every time something decent happened it was ruined by the inconsistency of it all... The good parts simply showed that this COULD have been good. But they opted against it, apparently...

37. Evan Almighty - 5/10 - It had heart, but no real discernable message, and poor usage of Wanda Sykes, who I think can be fantastic when she's got a good script. I'm glad I saw it once, but doubt i'll ever see it again.

38. Ghost Rider - 4/10 - This movie made me want to make my own Ghost Rider movie, one that was good.

39. Bratz - 1/10 - One Point for being so bad that I could sit through the whole thing, laughing my *** off at the terrible acting and absolute lack of plot and anything worthwhile.

Movies I'm Looking Forward To On DVD:
- The Darjeeling Limited
- Beowulf

Movies I'm Going to Try to Catch in Theaters:
- I'm Not There
- AVP: Requiem
- Atonement
- There Will Be Blood

15. Once - 8.5/10 - Not quite the kick in the head of fantasticness that people had me expecting, but still quite good, very touching, and definitely worth seeing, no matter who you are. The music was very good, and the girl was adorable. So... Yup.

You got that right.

UCers should start making predictions as to who will see more '07 movies (me or DSF). While it looks like it's all him at the moment, just know that there are at least 20 films that came out this year that I'm waiting to rent. In fact, I'm probably gonna see one tonight...

:)

By January 1st 2008, I will have seen more than you, and what better time limit than that? If we make this unlimited I will still be more awesome than you.

Challenge me. I will win.

I know that. I'm saying, the thread will still be open in the new year, since anyone can still see and comment a 2007 film. So, in the long run, who knows; I've still got a good 25+ movies I want to see from this calendar year. I usually only see about 20% (or less) of the year's movies - that I see - in theaters. And I can't speak for you, but it looks to me like you tend to see most of the films you want to see in the theater. So, I don't know, if we play by those rules, it's still anyone's game. :)

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
I think this might of been my favorite movie this year. I dunno. Maybe. It was the best HP movie yet. 4 and 7 are the best books. But they did an excellent job with the movie. Luna and Tonks were great.

Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End
This could be first or a close second. With one or two minor things this movie was a great final movie. Rush almost stole the show from Depp. Keith Richard's cameo was awesome.

Stardust
This movie was as good as I was hoping for. I wanted more swearing from the star like the book, but alas. The actors were great and it was a very fun and epic movie.

Shoot 'Em Up
This movie was over the top, tongue in cheek, action movie. Clive Owen played a great badass cynical weirdo and Paul Giowhatever is the greatest villain ever.

Black Snake Moan
I think this is the best Sam Jackson role ever. This movie was just cool. The music was great, Ricci was hot and very dirty. Even Timberlake didn't ruin the movie.

3:10 to Yuma
Bale and Crowe are some of the finest actors ever. Crowe really stole the film. He was very likeable and than just plains evil the next. I really never knew what would happen next. And who knew Ben Foster could act?

300
The movie that spawned a new sensation. I think that Miller's comics are much better movies. This was the manliest movie ever.

The Golden Compass
I don't understand why everyone hates this. I loved it. I have the need to read the book series now. Fantastic acting and lovable characters. I think it will only improve with future entries. It also makes me want a pet.

Transformers
I don't even like Transformers and this movie was great. Shia is lovable, Fox is uberhot. The Transformers were funny. And the action scenes were great.

Grindhouse
Planet Terror and Death Proof. I think I liked PT more. But they were both good. Rose McGowan is like my god. The trailers were fabulous. This movie couldn't really be enjoyed unless seen back to back with trailers.

30 Days of Night
I never read the source material, but I always had a thing for vampires stories. I liked the whole feel of the movie. The vampires were great looking. They looked like something out of a Rammstein video.

Live Free or Die Hard
I don't know if I seen any of the others or if I just forgot. But this was better than I thought it would be. Hilarious. Badass. I heard complaints of it was too over the top. That didn't bug me. All the actors were great.

Saw IV
The best one since the first one. I loved it all. The backstory of Jigsaw. I did have a problem with the stupid twist at the end. That was very dumb and pointless.

Superbad
Funniest movie all year. It wasn't over the top gross like most movies, will still being pretty close. The bit with the license had me dying.

I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry
This movie was really funny. The interaction between Sandler and that other guy was the highlight.

The Condemned
Stone Cold Steve Austin and Vinnie Jones on an island trying to kill each. That's just great. This was a lot better than I expected. It actually had a decent story and message. Austin was better than I thought he would be.

Hitman
This was the typical assassin story. But the acting was great. It was a fun movie that seem to fit the game.

Smokin' Aces
I liked the random characters in this. Reynolds was great. I loved the crazy redneck brothers and Alica Keys was fine.

The Simpsons Movie
This movie was funny but not gut busting. The comic book guy had the best parts and I was pissed at the missing Sideshow Bob.

Shrek the Third
Another fun movie with funny moments. It is just more of the same.

Knocked Up
A very original comedy, but as I never went though any of that, it never really sunk in with me. It had some really funny parts.

I Am Legend
The first parts of this movie were legendary. *snicker*. Once the third act came around it kinda of lost it and the original ending would of been so much better. Will Smith is awesome.

Resident Evil: Extinction
I never been a real fan of this movie or zombies in general. But this was pretty cool. Zombie crows were genius. I wish the fight between her and the C.E.O. guy would of went longer.

Shooter
This movie is why Mark Walhberg should play the Winter Soldier. It was a good action flick.

28 Weeks Later
This had some really fantastic moments and some really horrid scenes. The nightvision scene was the worst. It felt like watching One Night In Paris again.

TMNT
Not as fun as the old movies, but still fun. I wish we would of got more in depth with Kiara and where she came from.

The Last Mimzy
This is a cool kids movie with some eerily events. I enjoyed it, but it's really a kid's movie.

Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer
This was a major step up from the last one. And if they step up even more for the next one than it should be really good. Silver Surfer was flawless. Galactus. I'm not even going to touch that one.

Spider-Man 3
Probaly the most disappointing movie all year. I love Venom, but he sucked in this movie. He looked tacky and had no point to the movie. The Sandman was dumb due to bad writing and Emo Spider-Man. Come on. There was some enjoyable parts.

Beowulf
I really can't decide if I like this or not. It was funny, but only because it was so silly. I don't have a desire to see it again.

Halloween
This was your typical slasher flick. Complete with underage boobs. I was hoping for a little bit more.

Ghost Rider
This could of been uberawesome. Could of been, but fell flat. Le sigh.

War
Worst movie all year. They fight for 2 mins. And the ending was balls.

Movies I still want to see...
Bridge to Terabithia
Zodiac
Ratatouille
Hairspray
The Bourne Ultimatum
Rush Hour 3
The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford
We Own the Night
Wristcutters: A Love Story
American Gangster
Southland Tales
National Treasure: The Book of Secrets
Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street
Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem
Juno
