Weight Loss and Working Out

The key thing to remember during the holidays is that it's ok to pig out...a bit.....but you need to remain active. You have to keep working out. Otherwise you're just packing on calories without doing anything to burn 'em.

Portion control plays into it as well. Each portion of food should be no bigger than your fist. Obviously not as large....but no bigger. And eat often...it'll help keep your metabolism up and allow you to burn the food quicker.

Well, I'm trying to cut my soda habit, hard to do when your girl drinks nothing but soda, but I'm trying.

I don't want drastic changes, just small ones that add up.

I stopped drinking soda a couple years back. At first I was constantly thinking about it and noticing when other people were drinking it, but one day this summer I realized that I'd stopped thinking about it a year ago and hadn't even noticed.

But the thing that makes soda so bad is the high fructose corn syrup in it. It's great if you're not drinking soda, but lots of sports drinks and so-called fruit drinks are just as bad. Pay attention to the labels of what you're drinking and remember that lots of dietitians recommend sticking to milk and water.

I would also recommend not grazing. Decide up front what and how much you're going to eat at each meal so you won't end up eating fifteen cookies over half an hour while saying "Just one more won't hurt." Not that I've ever done that.

Works for me.

Also it helps to try to regularize your food intake as much as possible. Don't starve to feast later, as most people end up overeating that way. And on that note, you shouldn't miss meals and try to 'make up' for them later. Try to evenly distribute your food consumption across meals.

This makes sense.

However, I'm not sure how this would apply to me as I have really small fists. By that logic, I'd be eating less than a cup per portion.

Bingo.

This is the biggest contributor to overeating. Stupid fat Americans! In Russia...food eat YOU!

Well this concept is based off size. If you're 5'7" and 140lbs...you aren't gonna want to eat the portion size of someone like Houde. Your portion sized should be proportionate to your size.

I understood the logic of that, fo sho.

I'm just saying, at 5' 8" and 120lbs., I still have pretty small fists. I would like to eat more than just the size of my fist.

Unfortunately, 5' 8" is moderately above average in the Philippines.

It ain't exactly insanely tall, but at least it means I can keep most teenagers away by putting my hand to their head.

Also, bear in mind that we have a President who is 5' 0". One day she's going to get hit in the face by a door knob.

I would too

5'8" and 120lbs!?!?! What kinda man-baby are you?!?!?

:):):):)

Girlfriend's 4'10"

I'm always losing her in the mall, and end up holding the hand of some little girl.

God I hate when that happens.

I hate losing the short girlfriend and then you can't even see her over the shelves at Blockbuster. You wind up walking around Blockbuster for 20 minutes just searching for her.

Tell me about it. I'm 6'1", the girlfriend is 5'3". The worst store, though, is Barnes and Noble. She always goes to some out of the way area and then crouches as she's reading something. I wind up wandering the damn store for 20 minutes or so just looking for her.

On a different note, I've lost 20 pounds on Weight Watchers over the last two and a half months. I recommend it since you can eat whatever you want. You just have to watch your portions. :D

In my experience, I find that most people are overweight or out of shape due to zero to substandard activity levels and poor knowledge on nutrition and dieting.

Dieting doesn't work. Kinda. One of the biggest keys is to change your mindset on how and what you eat.

I maintain my current weight and still eat enough to build muscle by eating almost the same thing everyday (Mon-Fri). Then on the weekend I pig moderately.

One of my pet peeves about people who complain about maintaining their weight is how many of them absolutely totally will not walk or take the stairs unless given no choice. Also, 90% of Filipinos NEVER seem to understand the principle of escalator etiquette: stand still on the right side and use the left side to WALK.

Oh, I'm definitely guilty of being underactive. As for dieting, I agree with that. But I don't really consider Weight Watchers a diet. It's a lifestyle change. It teaches you to eat properly and cut down on the junk. You could eat a grilled chicken sandwich for 5 points compared to a fried chicken sandwich for 9 points. And when you only have 20 something points a day, you watch what you eat.

For Houde that's like 8 bananas!
Jolly Good Burn!

I'm all about convenience....but yeah. I hate people that will drive around for 10 minutes in the parking lot looking for a close spot....when they're seriously overweight and there are PLENTY of parking spots that are available at a moderate distance, but they're too lazy to walk.

Would it kill you to walk those several extra steps?
