Maybe I should work on the other three Watchmen timelines at some point, anyway. Could be fun to see.

The timeline works, though. The film is 1976 and the comic appearance is 1977.
The TV show then created an alternate sequel that disregarded everything but the original, so that's an alternate timeline. You could unofficially count the animated films if you desired here. Rorschach is another continuation but takes the TV show events as part of its history with some minor easter eggs.

I would typically agree with you, but there's only one version of this character. Clark Kent has LOTS of variants, while Travis Bickle, besides this cameo, has only one. There's no contradictions, the timeline matches, and it's an intentional link that they made. I think in regards to Before Watchmen, they might have wanted them to be connected.
If, let's say, they made a comic book continuation of Sam Raimi's Spider-Man and Darkman appeared for three pages and had a brief conversation with Peter Parker, you wouldn't be crazy to think that they're low-key connected. Clark Kent, on the other hand, is like if Dracula showed up.
I don't think Taxi Driver or Watchmen are connected if we're talking the individual entities that they are, but I think they are loosely connected through these three pages in a prequel comic that neither Martin Scorsese or Alan Moore likely approve of.
That's just the way I see it, though. I'm sure the intention was to connect them here, but I don't think that any other Watchmen media even recalls this insignificant crossover.

I guess it's more accurate to say that it happens in both but we're seeing the specific movie universe incarnation of events. It takes lore from the comics and is consistent with it but we're seeing the movie versions here.
IMO it depends on the creator approval. If Darkman appeared in a Raimi Spider-Man production, I would think they are the same universe if Sam Raimi approved it.
For example, Marvel 1985 miniseries by Mark Millar is canon to Millarverse, since it was referenced in the Kick-Ass comic.

We're assuming that Sam Raimi wasn't involved in this case. It's just a licensed continuation of Spider-Man that happens to feature Darkman in a brief appearance.
As far as Taxi Driver is concerned, I don't disagree that the cameo is essentially fan fiction. I do think it suggests that Taxi Driver happened in the reality of Before Watchmen, which considers Watchmen to have also happened.
That's my take.
1. Watchmen (1986) doesn't consider Taxi Driver canon.
2. Taxi Driver doesn't consider Before Watchmen canon.
3. Before Watchmen considers Taxi Driver and Watchmen (1986) canon.
It's kind of a weird situation.
