Ultimate # of Titles

Erm...isn't that The Ultimates is?

Technically yes, but I think Ultimate Avengers as opposed to the Ultimates would mean the Ultimates break away from SHIELD control and venture out on their own as an independent super-team, whereas right now they're doing and going wherever SHIELD/Fury tell them. I think the major difference is the idea of the Ultimate Avengers would be more like the original 616 Avengers.

Are we forgetting how the Ultimate books get their big fan base? It's from Marvel Movies, folks. The Ultimate comics were primarily there for newbie readers that have seen the films to chec out comics, easy to get into, most havn't gone that far so it's easy to pick up the storyline so far. I'm guessin that the next Ultimate title will be one of the new films that is set to come out soon.

Honestly, it would be great to see a Marvel Knights'ish title. One focusing on all aspects of the "dirty" side of the ultimate universe.
Actually, I think Ultimate Marvel Knights is still a workable concept, as compound and I have been toying with the subject for quite a few months now.

I think for it to be patently interesting would take a kind of re-imagination that might scream heresy for some devotees of the characters. I mentioned it elsewhere, in fact on one of MWOF's DD threads but didn't really go into details.

The thing is, many of the Silver Age Marvel characters who have now been Ultimatized --- The Fantastic Four, The X-Men and The Avengers --- were born out of anxiety over the atomic bomb and radiation. Ultimate characters tend to reflect an anxiety over power, over being more than human, reflecting a kind of (wait for it) superhuman zeitgeist.

But the Knights characters who were born in the 70s-90s cared little for the kind of technological anxiety that the Silver Age characters reflected. Luke Cage was an effort to reflect the African-American unrest and the trend in media towards blaxploitation. Ghost Rider refracted the 70's spiritual anxiety back to itself, at a time when America felt that the 60s idealism petered out into social and moral decay. Frank Miller's work on Daredevil explained how an individual can transcend their impoverished upbringing and their handicaps and stave off urban despair.

For an Ultimate Knights franchise to work, the characters cannot just exist alongside the existing Ultimate characters for their own sake. They have to be reexamined thematically and see their own themes "modernized".

How does a man with strong social ties, to his family and to his faith suddenly decide to go armed to the teeth on an antisocial crusade against crime? What is family and what is war? Where does punishment end and vengeance begin?

What is the meaning of damnation and salvation at a time when, post 9/11, the difference between the Judaeo-Christian, the Islamic and the agnostic is at its most tense? How do you summon up the worst in you and turn your own spirits of vengeance into a force of justice?

Why does a man, set back by the pain of a handicap, the injustice of the city, the loss of a father never lose hope? How does he continuously face failure and disappointment, suffer the circles of violence and pain and remain fearless?

How does one man face a world so compromised, drive a stake through the heart of evil, knowing that his accomplishments shall never be acknowledged? How does he take a blade to the darkness and never lose sight of what is black and what is white?

To examine that in ways the Marvel Knights never did, the Ultimate Knights have to be more different from their 616 predecessors than any other Ultimate characters.

Ultimate Spider-Man took the famous oath of "power and responsbility" and changed it to become a story of a boy learning to become a man. Ultimate X-Men reimagined the sociopolitical struggle into a question of ethics. The Ultimates took the ever-changing nature of a peacekeeping force like the Avengers and examines the tenuous nature of alliances between people, institutions and each other.

For Ultimate Knights to just exist, unchanged is doing an injustice to the ambitions of the existing Ultimate titles.

While you are right, for all the success that the line has had, it has been in spite of this. Maybe that wasn't the primary aim for the books. Otherwise the books would have stayed closer to the movie plots and the serieses (seri?) begun closer to the opening of the movies.

Yeah, but Marvel said that using the fan abse gathered form films is how the Ultimate titles have gotten so popular. Its a lot easier to get into a comic that is only on issue 10 or 11, than to get into a comic that is on issue 500. Well, less daunting anyway.

I still think an original series that took the people outside of America and stayed there is the only real viable concept for an ongoing at this point. Daredevil can't justify his own mini, much less an ongoing. The Ultimates are getting minis here and there to flesh out origin, and it'd be hard to make an ongoing out of one of them. Given that Banner is over his Hulk fits, one of the major points of the character is gone and I doubt Hulk with Banner's mind would be interesting enough to justify an ongoing. Most of the Marvel Knights characters still haven't even shown up, so that's out. The number of mutants is growing, but can still be kept to a manageable level, so a second X-book really isn't a necessity despite what people say.

Personally I'd love to see The Punisher get his own Ultimate title. Although, it'd need a good writer, and I'm not so sure Ennis would write it. But hey, Ult. Punisher would be good.

Like I've repeatedly pointed out, characters that can't make it as a mini don't get made into ongoings. Besides, we've barely seen Ultimate Punisher anyways. Ultimate Team-Up, I think the Ultimate Spidey Super-Special, and is that it? That's not enough to justify them putting out the expenditure to make him into his own title.

He was also in the Carnage arc for a bit fighting against Ultimate Boomerang.

I still maintain that Supreme Power should be an Ultimate book.

Why? It's much to violent to be one.

It is exactly what Joe Quesada defines as the idea behind the Ultimate line - a retelling in a more modern setting.

I don't think it's any more violent than, oh, say, the Cap vs. Herr Keiser scenes in Ultimates.

You can say that about any title:

'Did the Fantastic Four really need their own Ultimate title?' The answer is, no, they didn't need one. But it has turned out to be one of the best UU titles and with the Crossover arc, it could turn out to be the best. Punisher would be great with his own series, but like I said before, a book like Amazing Fantasy (Ultimate Marvels?) would be the best bet for Marvel.

I think FF could handle an ongoing far more easier than Punisher. After all, the FF is one of the four corners of the Marvel universe along with X-Men, Spider-Man and Avengers.

Though Wolverine could hold his own... :D

Don't even go there. Please!

The only realistic chances of an ongoing are DD and a Spotlight title, with the latter being very unlikely due to the sham that was Team-Up. But as Ourchair(I think) has stated before the various titles can be sorted by genre:

USM:teen drama
UXM:eek:ppressed minority
ULT:geo-political commentary
UFF:sci-fi

Thats probably a bit off, but he general idea gets across. So, to prevent the stagnation and destruction of the line, a new title would have to be different.
So thats any mutant titles out the window :D
No more teen dramatics :D
No black ops/political/war/supersoldier books
No sci-fi books, which is a bit strange considering the amount of titles they could spin out of the Galactus trilogy eg Captain Marvel, Silver Surfer, etc.

So if we want to figure out a/the(?) new title, we need to find a niche that has to be filled. The only one that I could think of was a crime/detective type book which would suit a character like DD perfectly, and he's a popular enough character to justify a title. Daredevil for me.

And I'm with j, enough with the ****ing retarded guesses. Use your heads and *try* to come up with plausible guesses, not what'd be "kewl." Seriously some of the crap I saw reading this thread. Punisher? Ghost Rider? Moon Knight? Some of these are on par with saying that Ultimate Howard The ****ing Duck would be a great addition to the line!

You got somethign agianst howard beotch?

Here's my two bits...

Ultimates leave SHIELD at the end of Ultimates 2. This would create two new titles.

Ultimate Avengers
Ultimate Nick Fury, Agent* of SHIELD

(I know he's director, but yeah...)

I'd personally love a Nick Fury led book. much more Espionage, black ops political stuff...
