So we have a title and a release date, and the primary cast. Any thoughts on a plot?

I'm not much of a Thor expert - is there a past storyline that "The Dark World" references?

Mads Mikkelsen would have been a great villain. I hope they can find a suitable replacement.

Svartalfheim

Another of the Nine Worlds, Svartalfheim is a shadowy land where the dark elves dwell (as opposed to the light elves of Alfheim). As these dark elves aren't the biggest fans of Thor and the Asgardians, it's not exactly a stretch to assume this realm could be the "dark world" in the sequel.

That's only because Thor and Loki didn't sit around having a drawn out conversation about existentialism, architecture, and platform boots for two hours. Maybe in part 3, though.

I thought it took itself too seriously.

I thought it took itself too seriously.

What would have been better if it didn't take itself as seriously, and what would be the best way to do that?

I wouldn't have liked something more serious.

If someone says "Why so serious?" I'm going to internet punch them...

Anyway, apparently there are going to be dark elves in this

Stuntman James Grogan:
The other day for example, this is quite random but I was working on Thor 2," he explains, "I had a load of stunt guys in and the director came in and he said 'Look, we want you all to be elves,' and I was like 'What the hell is an elf anyway?' and he said 'I want you all to walk around like these supernatural animals,' honestly it was the most ridiculous thing ever but you just have to not be self aware and get on with it."

My thoughts are that Odin made some sort of deal with the inhabitants of the 'Dark World' in order to get Thor to Earth in the Avengers. So Thor 2 would be about the repercussions of that deal. Maybe something happened that Odin didn't expect, and then he tries to renege on it or something. Which ends in some sort of epically huge battle in Lord of the Rings style with Thor leading the charge. That would be cool.

I'm actually surprised Anthony Hopkins was willing to sign a multi-picture contract in order to play Odin. He's a fantastic actor, but he's developed a reputation as being "diva-ish" (is that a word?). I was surprised he did the first one, let alone a second (and hopefully a third).

Granted, he played Hannibal Lecter three times, but that was an Oscar winning role the first time around and more in the territory of his high brow roles.

Hopkins' "diva-ish" is simply that he doesn't do rehearsals. In order to remain spontaneous on screen he does very few takes and no rehearsals. It's not that he's unreasonable in his preparation, rather he doesn't fit the industry standard of doing continuous takes.

Only a rumor right now, but Viggo Mortensen is rumored to be in talks for the role of Dr. Strange in the Thor sequel, and supposedly not just a cameo, but a supporting role. Again, it's only a rumor, but the guy who broke it also was the first to break the news of Falcon being in Captain America - The Winter Soldier and the first to confirm Sebastian Stan returning as Bucky/Winter Soldier in that film (though the second was expected, the first wasn't, so he's got a bit of credibility to his record).

Also, think Viggo is a great actor who not only looks the part, but could definitely add a whole lot of awesome to the role. While it's a bit suspect that the Thor sequel is filming now and no confirmed news of Mortensen's involvement has been confirmed yet, I figure it could be due to his scenes filming towards the end of production, or Marvel Studios doing a good job of keeping it secret (like Hawkeye's cameo in the first Thor).

Hope it's true, personally.
