This was a really good fun self-contained action movie in the old style of 70s and 80s action movies - far more like the Wolverine movie I've always wanted to see. It didn't reinvent the wheel or revitalise the genre, but in a Summer of really disappointing superhero movies, I thought this one was pretty great. Ironically the least pretentious superhero movie ever made.

And Jackman just owned every speck of every frame he was in, as always. Possibly his best performance as Wolverine, yet.

Re: The Wolverine (News)

So this takes place after X-Men 3, not between the first Wolverine and X-Men 1?

Correct.

I also thought this was really good and now I'm really excited for Days of Future Past.

I'm not interested to see where Sabretooth's story goes. I've always wanted to see Wolverine versus a bunch of ninjas on-screen though.

i really hope the sequel is mostly taken from Claremont's and Miller's Wolverine mini. Just Wolverine, Mariko, and a bunch of ninjas. No more throwing every character cameo possible in.

And that's what we got!

Was this better than Man of Steel and The Amazing Spider-Man?

I keep hearing that it's really good, but that Viper is sort of a campy villain and the finale is sort of ridiculous. But I can handle that. Not sure when I'll get to see this, but hopefully at some point.

Yes and Yes.

Yeah, Viper really wasn't integral to the movie, anyone could've taken her place to play the role she did. Finale could've been better, but passable at least. Still, two minor things in an overall great movie.

If there are any other Wolverine solo movies, I want James Mangold to be involved again.

For those who've seen it, is it mentioned or alluded to at all about how much time has passed since The Last Stand? I've seen in trailers when the Japanese sidekick finds him he's all scruffy looking and bearded. So I assume its been a couple years or more at least.

Also, I know the mid credits scene with Prof X and Magneto meeting up with him in the airport occurs 2 years after the events in Japan, at least according to reports from Comic Con. Was just wondering if that's established in the film itself (with a "2 years later" title card thing) or just a timeline they'd set behind the scenes

Also, I know some of it takes place during World War II. Is it set around the time of the atomic bombs dropping on Hiroshima and Nagasaki? I'm assuming that based on the trailer.

Also, the old man who offers Wolverine a "cure" for his immortality is the same guy he saves in the WWII portion, obviously. Is it ever mentioned how old he is during the modern day portion?

Sorry, all timeline related questions.

The only time mentioned was the one in the scene in the credits (it did say 2 Years later). I didn't hear about how long it was since TLS that I can remember.

Yes, it was the time of the atomic bomb dropping in Hiroshima/Nagasaki.

It's never mentioned how old the guy is.

It's definitely better than Man of Steel and I liked it more than The Amazing Spider-Man. It does have problematic developments near the end and Viper seems like an unnecessary character but the rest of the movie is really solid. After the last Wolverine movie (and Iron Man 3 and Man of Steel this year), it's a pleasant surprise.

I'm looking forward to watching an unrated/extended cut.

Also: I'm pretty sure this movie wipes X-Men Origins: Wolverine from continuity. Wolverine remembers things he shouldn't - and I doubt Days of Future Past will refer to that movie either. Victory!

My expectations were not very high, and it ended up being way, way, WAY better than I thought it would be.

I agree: Jackman is great in every frame he's in. The film is a lot of fun - particularly the bullet train sequence - but it's too convoluted and the ending just doesn't work. Almost there.

Ok, thanks. Guess the timeline is still able to be approximated based on the old mans assumed age in relation to WWII.

Well, I loved the first two thirds of the movie. If they had just had Harada fight Wolverine in adamantium armor at the finale instead of the robot and the twist, it would have been much better. And what the heck... He just has bone claws now? And viper sucked as a character.

But, all said, I really enjoyed myself for most of the movie. Wolverine, Mariko, and Yukio were great. The chamistry between Wolverine and Mariko in particular just worked so well. The part that dealt with Wolverine's inner struggle was amazing and seeing him vulnerable was really cool.

3.5 stars and my favourite Super hero movie of the summer, but not better than the Amazing Spider-Man (although if the ending had been better, it would have been).

The adamantium doesn't grow back by itself, so it makes sense that his claws are bone.

The Silver Samurai wasn't at least just robot, which is what it looked like at first. Not that it's better, just sayin'... :p

I understand that, but I don't want the movie just left with him having bone claws! I was hoping he was going to find some of the leftover adamantium stockpile and dip his claws in it. That would have been far fetched, but I would have been okay with it.

I don't think that would have worked with the story or the character. Besides, this is something different and interesting, which I like very much. It can make for some interesting moments.

I agree Cap. I also like the first 2/3's of the movie. And I agree, it should have ended after the Harada fight. Maybe he could have worn non robotic Silver Samurai armor. It didn't need the whole extra bit with the Silver Samurai robot/cyborg thing. And Viper was a pointless character. This movie COULD have been pretty good but during the 3rd act it really barfed on itself.
