I would disagree with the assessment of him "writing as craft" as opposed to "writing as art", because the two are not opposite ends of the coin. It is a fallacy to suggest art isn't craft and that craft can't be art.
Lobdell isn't much of an artist or craftsman. His soap opera tendencies are just cliches. It feels "by the book" because it's by someone else's book or his own past books.
