The Smoking Thread

My father smokes, but only one or two a day when he does smoke- and never near anyone. Always outside on the porch or in the backyard. My mother smoked for a while but quite some 12+ years back.
I've got an aunt like that. She smokes one cigarette every evening. She works like a mad man and really needs a smoke in the evening to relax.

At any rate, you don't wanna hear my opinions? No one's got a gun to your head.
Second hand smoke has a gun to my head.

Don't shoot! I'll type whatever you want!
Second-hand smoke kicked me in the balls and took my lunch money.
That monster!
You know what they say, "If she smokes, she pokes."
Not 100% true, but usually pretty accurate.
Scientific fact: If you quit before you turn thirty, there are almost no long term negative health problems.
Never heard that before.
I've got to hear your source on that tidbit. Other than the fact that it's a gross generalization, I have a hard time believing a scientific body would come to that kind of conclussion.
Not that I doubt the good doctor, but I'd like to see that research as well.

Wikipedia article on tobacco smoking, which cites the British Doctors' Study...

those who stopped smoking before they reached 30 years of age lived almost as long as those who never smoked.

There's the article... Basically it says that by smoking regularly until death you live on average 10 years less than lifelong nonsmokers. Those who quit by age 40 gained nine of those ten years back, and those who quit by age thirty get back all ten.

These are the same people who first concluded that smoking increased risk of lung cancer, in case certain people would want to try and say that these people are biased and/or wrong.

If only you had had the option not to take up a habit that you knew was deadly, expensive, and addictive in the first place!

The simple fact is, you knew it would be hard to quit when you made the decision take the habit up.

Smokers always seem to change the subject when you bring this up, because there's absolutely no way to justify it.

First of all, most people go in not believing the hype. You try it the first time and it's no big deal, matter fact, it releases stress. A stress that very much needs to be released in a healthy manner. You can't be one to judge and point the finger when you're morally wrong one way or another. Nobody is a messiah and if I wanna smoke, that's my right. Nobody goes into smoking knowing it's gonna be hard to quit. It's the first time you try is when it hits you. And you're right, there is no way to justify why we smoke. Liek there's no way to justify why VVD gets a hard on for killing people, or why MWOF likes the sauce. It's only because we enjoy it. I hate porn and I can give you a lecture on how big of a loser you(in general) are for not going out to take a real girl on a date. You're reason to justify it would obviously be either that you love hot chicks or that you needed to let off steam. Everyone needs to let off steam and they have different ways of doing it. Whether it be playing sports or knocking down jager bombs( 8) ). You can't tell me it's wrong to smoke and tell me I'm the idiot for I will fart in your general direction. And now I ruined my argument.

Did any of you guys ever actually have any peer pressure? It was different for me because I'm from a mountain populated almost exclusively by dirty hippies with all that implies but did you ever really have any desire to smoke because it was cool?

I never had any peer pressure other than weed. I smoke cigarettes to lay off steam from those little devils I take care of. I swear, everyone but my mom smokes on their lunch or whenever they get the chance, because dealing with 20 kids in your room is hec.tic. When I turned 18 I marched up to the counter and pointed at my reds. The guy didn't card so I made him and I smoked. Now it's a habit. I understand the risks at this point now, but oh well. You're gonna die any way. I think the best line I can think of is from Scary movie 3 when the kids tells the smoker, "Smoke all you want, you're gonna get hit by a bus." See smokes don't kill you, busses do.

Nope like Hibiki I was only pressured to smoke weed.

As for me I don't smoke anything except the occasional cigar, personally I just get a bad taste in my mouth and keep having to spit. Also, I have no problems with other people smoking, I only get pissed off if the smell gets in my car, or on my clothes.

Anything I say here would only detract from how wildly you just discredited yourself.

And you've missed my point entirely.

I don't give a flying **** whether or not you waste your money and ruin your lungs by smoking.

I've said it a dozen times here. The only reason I'm judging, looking down on, or disrespecting any smoker here is because second-hand smoke harms and kills innocent people.

And I know from experience.

It's horribly selfish of smokers to knowingly and willfully do that to people "because they're stressed out".

News Flash: EVERYONE IS STRESSED OUT.

And their are a whole lot of people way more stressed out than you who somehow haven't turned to smoking to relieve it, and have just toughed it out.

So I'll say it again, smarten up. Giving other people lung cancer and emphasema against their wishes is a choice you do

Why do you assume that I or others here smoke around people? I think that's ignorant that you would tell me to smarten up when I, myself, don't smoke around anyone other than fellow smokers. Also I think it's hypcritic that you pic has a smoker. :noway: For shame

Please show me where I made that assumption about you or the others here and not "smokers in general".

Well since he's a comic strip character and can't give anyone else cancer...

I only smoke with smokers or off by myself... I'm not breathing smoke in other people's faces.

We get that you dont like smoking, but that doesn't mean that every smoker is irresponsible and careless, despite your personal experiences.

Question, is it wrong to throw beer in someone's face if blow smoke in my face? Cause, I've really wanted to sometimes.

I can reasonably respect this study. I would necessarily say British doctors represent a good cross section of people. The probablity of cigarette smokers dying in middle age was almost triple that of non-smokers. I'd like to be able to read the full text of this study. They usually require you to pay to read it in the journal it was published in.

Side question, DSF, can I make a really bad gay/cigarette joke?

Just to throw my 10 pence worth in.............

If the Governments didn't need all the hefty taxes they receive from smokers then this thread wouldn't exist !!

If they sell it to me legally then I'll smoke when and where I damn like !!

Thank you, I appreciate that.

A lot of the other people here are acting like jerks, especially if you look at the responses to the second-hand smoke argument even after I mentioned that whether or not second-hand smoke kicked Moony in the nuts, it's still killing my grandmother.

I guarantee that you'll never, ever see a smoker give a straight answer to that comment, and that says volumes more than I ever could.

you wanna talk about second hand smoke, i'll lay it down here for you.

in this world there are three choices you always have. no matter what.

1) to just leave.

2) to fight

3) to stay put

and if im taking a smoke in a smoking area, you have the CHOICE to walk away and not be bothered by it. BUT if you CHOOSE to stay in an area where there is smoke. than that is YOUR choice. and don't give me that, i don't have a choice or my granny didn't have a choice. there is always a choice. if you don't take the action then its your fault. the choice is there. Even if someone has a gun to your head, there is still the choice to live or to die.

and if you think second hand smoke alone kills people, and you call yourself Planet-man...how much do you know about the toxins being pumped into the air everyday? or how many toxins a normal person breaths into there lungs? or how what type of 'safe' poison we eat and drink everyday?. or what is in that rain that just fell from the sky?

and if you say that you don't have the choice to the air you breath, then think again. you have the choice to fight it. to try and bring it to peoples attention to get laws lobbied for and the such. but if you choose to stay put and do nothing it is still your choice.

any questions?

BOO to tha YA!!!!

*insert clap here*

The fact that you know it's bad for you, and much more importantly, others just makes you all the dumber for smoking.
I'm not dumb I'm addicted, there is a difference! See, I actualy want to quit.

If only you had had the option not to take up a habit that you knew was deadly, expensive, and addictive in the first place!

There's just no right answer!
I didn't think I would become addicted. i started off small and the habit grew. If I could go back I would. People make mistakes it doesn't mean we're dumb and want to kill ourselves and others by blowin smoke.

Yeah, they do, because a smoker's selfish habit is harming other people than themselves.
Whatever, yeah my smoke from the back porch is hurting everybody.

Smokers who whine that they can't quit and that you have no idea how hard it is are worse than Emos.
Your worse that my brothers girlfriend. Clearly you don't know anything of addiction. Read my other posts in this thread! I've almost died due to my smoking too much. If that doesn't validate that this addiction is real I don't know what will.

Listen, I want to make something absolutely clear:

Although I think smokers are foolish for pouring money into an extremely unhealthy addiction with nothing to show for it, I could care less what you do to yourself.

I'm against smoking for the simple reason that Second. Hand. Smoke. Hurts. And. Kills. Other. People.

Smokers always seem to change the subject when you bring this up, because there's absolutely no way to justify it.
If you smoke in public places sure I guess you have a point, I don't so this doesn't apply to me. Sorry about your Grandma by the way, thats rough.

I thought about it and the joke wasn't that funny.

Jeez what a let down. I was looking foward to it all day.:p

I just got off my smoke break, oh it was glorious.
I been noticing lately that I've developed a habit that I do only while I smoke.

It's spitting:x Super gross, but I constantly spit while smoking. I wonder why? I don't have this problem any other time.

It was basically a play off the word *** as being both a homosexual and a cigarette.
