I just upgraded the RAM on my 2009 MacBook Pro (went from 2 GB to 8 GB). It was so slow it was almost unusable before, but now it's like new again.

When your computer runs out of RAM during normal use it virtualizes RAM by using your hard drive. This is horribly inefficient and slows everything down. Adding RAM makes a HUGE difference in how your computer operates.

As software and operating systems advance they become "bigger" and more resource-dependent, so they need more RAM. You're constantly running dozens of processes at once, even if you think you only have a couple programs open. It's a vicious cycle.
