The All About Comics Thread 5: Comic Books Ate My Paycheck

I finally finished the Bone One Volume Edition.

I don't have any idea if it includes the spin-offs DiB mentioned - a quick search didn't give a clear answer.

I liked it overall, but fatigue set in mid-way through and it became a chore to finish. I sat down and plowed through the last 300 or so pages and enjoyed the ending. I think that's just what it was - a 1300 page book is a pretty daunting task. When I was reading it I was mostly enjoying it, but it got to feeling like it would never end. I don't think it's so much that the story was too slow as it was just a LOT to get through.

Good book, though. I'd recommend it.

Now I need to figure out what my next reading project will be. I just finished re-reading Mark Waid's Fantastic Four and I think I might jump to the Millar/Hitch and Hickman runs.

I'm pretty sure the spinoffs/prequels aren't included in the massive edition, just the entire run of the original series.
 
Anyone go out for FREE COMIC BOOK DAY?

I went and had a great time. The store was packed, which was great, and people were apparently already there before the store even opened. I got in about quarter after noon and had to literally wait about 10-15 minutes before I was able to get to my friend who owns the place. I had to send him a text telling him I was there. :lol:

But it was nice seeing everyone come in, lots of kids, too, getting the free comics and buying other books as well. My friend had the comics/graphic novels/story arc sets on sale, as well.

And I definitely helped put a smile on a little boy's face when he came in with his mom asking about Black Panther, whom the kid was getting into. I told them he should get the New Avengers series since that's where Panther is currently appearing. His mom got him the first five (current) issues, plus the Hawkeye TPB. I also made sure he took with him the Infinity free Marvel book since it ties into the overall story in New Avengers.

Mainly because I'm a Mass Effect freak (even though the comic spin offs primarily suck), but also wanted to check out the RIPD story and the Killjoys story since that's getting a lot of hype.

Unfortunately they didn't have it... :(

Ten Grand by JMS and Ben Templesmith. What a weird book.

The art and coloring are absolutely beautiful. but the story is just so weird. A guy gets killed, and makes a deal with an angel that if he fights crime and dies in an honorable or meaningful way he gets to spend 5 minutes with his wife (girlfriend?), who was killed by a demon.

I mean, it's such a bizarre and specifically weird premise that it makes it a chore to follow.
 
I was kind of excited to read Satellite Sam and looked at 4 different comic stores to find it and couldn't...but I read it and found it to be a mess. Not sure I'll bother giving this one much more of a chance.

Going off (my very bad) memory here, but I seem to remember reading the first couple of issues of the most recent volume or relaunch or whatever it was and just could not get into it. One day I'll try to start from the beginning.

Yeah, this seems like Bull****. Williams has supposedly been drawing it for what, a year now? And its bi-monthly. Pushing it back 2 months is terrible. And it makes me very apprehensive about when future issues will ship is this isI was planning to buy each issue and the special edition off month copies but now I'm not sure.
 
One of the comments said JHW3 was waiting for the script for #2 just before the first issue came out. What the ****? Comic companies still haven't learned how to wait?

I'd be surprised if that was actually the case. Gaiman isn't new to any of this. He's normally pretty professional about everything too. Him being that late of a script just doesn't sound right.

Wonder if it has anything to do with the Miracleman reprints/new issues by Marvel. Course with them starting in January and presumably being monthly, that means we're still over two years away from the new issues...which should start around January, 2016. Maybe Buckingham was given a huge lead time on the new stuff to ensure no delays/time for edits/changes/his other commitments like Fables (which should be finished in early 2015 with issue #150). That still allows about a year of lead time even if he doesn't start on the Miracleman stuff until then. And I'm sure Gaiman will have knocked out a few issues at least, especially since #25 has been written and drawn for 20 years and only needs to be colored. Course Gaiman may have altered his plans for the direction the title goes so may require some changes.

I don't know...is Williams working on anything else? Is Gaiman? Seems surprising DC/Vertigo wouldn't have had at least a few issues in the can before publishing, given they knew it would sell well.
