"You see a photo of young Leatherface… an old picture from the late 70s. The logic for me is that Leatherface, after the crimes of the original movie, just ran away. [His new mother figure] took pity on him… saw that he was mentally challenged and scared and probably did some terrible things. She took him in under her wing. Probably… I think…. a lot of the movies that happened after [the original] still happened. He probably escaped, ya know. He was in and out of that place for a long time. I think she probably gave him enough chances as movies [that] happened. And then it got to a point that he settled down. He just stayed there."

Explanations
The Hewitt family from the reboot are completely new characters, thus there is no contradiction with them co-existing with the original family. They might be connected to the Sawyer family through the Illuminati or Thomas' mother, but all possible connections are speculation. Erin Hardesty could be related to Sally Hardesty from the original film. The narrator, who is a canon character, returns in both reboot films, technically making him the only crossover character.

The only other technically related thing I can think of is Butcher Boys. All explicit connections were removed when they made it no longer a Texas Chainsaw Massacre film however. I guess it works as a spin-off but... well, I don't know. I don't think there's any real confirmation of a shared universe explicitly.
