Star Wars General Discussion (dedicated to Houde)

It's actually the best reviewed novel in the new SW canon so far (on Amazon anyway).

I do get what you mean about it lacking tension due to knowing the outcome though (well, part of the outcome, there were still a few surprises in store).

Weird. Everyone I've talked to has felt basically the same way I did. I think the romance stuff really dragged the book down and I say that as a big fan of romance. It just wasn't well done.

I haven't read it yet, so can't offer my take.

To be fair, in regards to the reviews, since the novel has only been out a couple weeks it's likely the rating will drop some as more reviews are given.

Vader Down

Vader Down will start with an oversized one-shot, before continuing into issues of the ongoing series "Star Wars" and "Darth Vader." "Star Wars" writer Jason Aaron and "Darth Vader" writer Kieron Gillen -- who have a history of collaboration dating back to their time on the X-Men books -- will write the story, illustrated by "Darth Vader" series artist Salvador Larroca and Marvel veteran Mike Deodato. Mark Brooks will illustrate covers for the event.

According to details released to press, the story sees Darth Vader, on his own, crash-landed and up against the forces of the Rebel Alliance. Along with Vader, fellow Star Wars headliners Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, Han Solo and Chewbacca are mentioned as playing a part in "Vader Down," along with the newly introduced Aphra, who debuted in "Darth Vader" #3.

"Vader Down" #1 is scheduled for release in November.

This should be pretty good.

I hate when Marvel does stuff like this. Stop screwing around and just put the issue in the regular series so it's easy to follow.

I've done some deep research. Maybe someone here has stumbled onto something figuring this out. Is Dash Render canon? Canon sources acknowledge The Outrider at Mos Eisley during ANH but everything else surrounding that is still considered legends.

The Outrider does indeed exist in the new canon, as you mentioned due it's appearance in ANH's Special Edition version.

However, as of now, Dash Rendar isn't canon. That may change and they'll possibly reintroduce him at a future point, but as it stands now, nope, no Dash in the new canon.

Short answer: no
Long answer: no he is not

I can't confirm the outrider though because I'm too scared to watch the Blu rays of the original trilogy. It felt weird enough with episode 1 & 2 being changed.

rogue-one-cast-photo-d23.jpg

The filmmakers have assembled a stellar cast, including Felicity Jones, nominated for an Academy Award for her leading role in The Theory of Everything; Diego Luna, who was featured in 2008's Oscar-winning Milk and the critically acclaimed Killing Them Softly; Ben Mendelsohn, recently nominated for an Emmy for his leading role in Bloodline and co-starring in the upcoming Mississippi Grind; Donnie Yen, Hong Kong action star and martial artist who starred in Ip Man and Blade II; Jiang Wen, who co-wrote, produced , directed and starred in the award-winning Let the Bullets Fly and Devils on the Doorstep; Forest Whitaker, recently featured in the critically-acclaimed Lee Daniels' The Butler and winner of an Academy Award for his leading role in 2006's The Last King of Scotland; Mads Mikkelsen, who starred in The Hunt and was the memorable villain from 2006's Casino Royale; Alan Tudyk, who plays a performance-capture character in Rogue One, stars in the soon-to-be-released Con Man series and Trumbo, which releases this November; and Riz Ahmed, who was recently featured in Nightcrawler and starred in the BAFTA-winning film Four Lions.

"Rogue One takes place before the events of Star Wars: A New Hope and will be a departure from the saga films but have elements that are familiar to the Star Wars universe," says Kathleen Kennedy. "It goes into new territory, exploring the galactic struggle from a ground-war perspective while maintaining that essential Star Wars feel that fans have come to know. Gareth is such an innovative director and I'm so excited to be working with him and the extraordinary ensemble cast he's selected for 'Rogue One.'"

Looks great

That's really exciting. I'm so geeked for anything Star Wars; they're handling everything very well so far.

Finn with Luke's lightsaber!

I like the idea that Finn might be Han's son with the woman in the comic (what was her name?) but I think that would be kind of obscure for the general moviegoing audience.

Still - Finn and Rey as half-siblings...

While the familial ties have always been strong in the first six episodes, it'd be nice for them to have a main or supporting character in the form of Finn who, while a potential Jedi, isn't from the Skywalker family.

It'd sort of act as a counterpoint to the Prequel trilogy era where Jedi were everywhere, and the original trilogy where it was limited to Luke (and later Leia) after Obi-Wan's death, in the sense the Jedi are slowly returning to the galaxy after the fall of the second Death Star.

I do think Rey is the likely candidate for continuing the Skywalker legacy, mainly due to the scene from the trailer with Leia handing a lightsaber to (presumably) another female.

On a side note...

I've been loving the Marvel SW comics.

Both the SW and Darth Vader ongoings are reliably good or great every month, and the minis have all been incredibly strong so far as well. The Princess Leia mini was great, and the current Lando mini (that's 3 issues in) is absolutely perfect in every way. For the most part they're pure joy to read every month.

The Kanan ongoing is less impressive, but still a decent read.

Looking forward to seeing how the Chewbacca and Shattered Empire minis turn out.

Star Wars - I am absolutely loving everything. Solo's "wife" (who didn't see that coming I mean really. There's no way she's legit), Ben's journal, Luke's hunt, the art and the way it feels perfectly like Star Wars. So good.

Darth Vader - this one I love in spurts. There's really great character moments, but when it's follow Not-Ashoka it doesn't lose me so much as de-hypes me. We know she's not going to make it, but I'm having fun watching her interact with Annie.

Leia - I didn't care for this. It wasn't bad, jist not something I found interesting and, while I'm sure it's building to something, I just don't care. Great art though.

Kanan - easily the best ongoing, by far. Oh man I almost cried reading the first like three issues when he lost his master. Best art of any of them on top of that. And the next arc we're going full prequel era. Cannot wait!

Lando - best miniseries. Only thing wrong with it is that it's a miniseries. Lando is better than ever.

Completely agree. It absolutely bleeds that authentic Star Wars feel. The characters lines echo exactly the characters from the films, as does the art. It really is great.

That's what I like about it, is mainly those character moments. Still remember the scene where Vader found out Luke was his son... that was powerful and incredibly memorable. As for "not-Ahsoka" not making it, that may not be true. Vader is absolutely ruthless and it seems obvious he'll take her out eventually to cover his back (since she's the only real link between Vader and his secret workings behind the Emperor's back). However, I could see it possibly going another way, with Vader stranding her alive on a remote planet so that she can live, but not be a likely threat. Sort of a hint of that little bit of good that remains in Anakin, and won't be seen again until the end of Return of the Jedi.

I'd also be perfectly ok with Vader Force choking her to death. It is in-character, after all.

Leia - I didn't care for this. It wasn't bad, jist not something I found interesting and, while I'm sure it's building to something, I just don't care. Great art though.

I'll admit, while it was a very well written tale, it didn't grab me anywhere near as much as the SW, Vader ongoings or the Lando mini. However, its still a great mini, just not my cup of tea either.

Kanan - easily the best ongoing, by far. Oh man I almost cried reading the first like three issues when he lost his master. Best art of any of them on top of that. And the next arc we're going full prequel era. Cannot wait!

Its good, but not sure how you like it better than the SW ongoing. I do enjoy it, and wonder if I may not judge it overly harshly due to it being set in the Prequel era. I just find it difficult to take interest in that period for some reason (perhaps some unfair taint left over with my disappointment in the Prequel movies).

I do like that it'll apparently shift back and forth in time. First arc was all post RotS, next issue is a One Shot set in the Rebels era, and as you said the next arc ("First Blood") is another prequel era tale, but set before RotS. I do like that they're using it to expand on the Prequel era now that the canon has been rebooted. That era has largely been ignored so far with the reboot, so its nice that Kanan offers a healthy dose of that.

Lando - best miniseries. Only thing wrong with it is that it's a miniseries. Lando is better than ever.

Completely agree. Its pure gold. I have no doubts they'll do more Lando minis, perhaps bridging this tale and ESB, that cover how he gets to Bespin. A heist tale with Lando intending only to steal a rare ship, finding out who its owner is, and the discovery of a Sith treasure trove inside, guarded by desiccated Royal Guards...

Its got everything! And much like the SW ongoing, I can't help but hear Billy Dee's voice every time I read Lando's lines. Again, the dialogue is absolutely spot on.

The art in Lando is so great.

Star Wars proper and especially Vader are adding a TON to the established storyline. If you are not reading these you are seriously missing out.

I just finished the novel Tarkin and really liked it. It also added a lot to the story, particularly with the relationship between Tarkin and Vader and the plans the Emperor has (very surprising).

I am going to say there is one difference between ANH and Star Wars and that's that Luke doesn't come off as whiney or annoying like he did for me in ANH and that's a good thing. Feels more like ESB Luke, which is my favorite. I want more Ben stories.

That scene was done so well in the main book, but, maybe because I read that first, I thought it was kind of lacking in DV. Or maybe it's because the faces for Padme and Luke took me completely out of the scene. I want Vader to stab her through the heart.

I think if they can make it pay off later it will at the very least make it more bearable. Ot just seemed so pointless on top of everything. Leia didn't really change much. It was a hell of a lot better than that Guys Isn't Racism Bad? comic hes doing with JG Jones for sure though lol

I think it's because I didn't really care for episodes 4 and 6 and that The Clone Wars is my jam. I love that era and I love that you can see how everything evolved into the OT and now PT stuff is bleeding in. Clones are the most tragic characters in the whole universe so when Order 66 happens its not like how it was when Revenge of the Sith came out anymore. We know that every single clone was their own individual person and that they had a very strong relationship with the Jedi. Its actually really depressing when you think about it. I also love how this comic is informing Rebels in Kanan's decisions in that

Just remember, due to Commander, Death Troopers are canon. At some point the Empire got zombies. Man that was a cool book. That'd be awesome if in Rogue One they stumble on their plans or a mission log. Just a quick tease that never gets explained until they announce a Death Troopers film. Or those guards, maybe that's the start.

Luke was whiny on Tatooine at the beginning of ANH (and a few other instances after leaving the planet). I suppose blowing up a Death Star puts a little hair on your chest...

I do agree the Clones have an interesting overall story. I'm really looking forward to the upcoming SW-Rebels episode (think its the second episode of Season 2, "The Lost Commanders" if I recall correctly). They'll be bringing back some of the surviving Clones from the Clone Wars TV series. And them exploring that transition as a result of Order 66 was nice to see fleshed out.

Just remember, due to Commander, Death Troopers are canon. At some point the Empire got zombies. Man that was a cool book. Could be. I think it's far more likely it's unrelated to the Death Troopers and has something to do with a Sith artifact in that room slowly siphoning the life force from living beings. That's how it came off to me given the zoom in on that helmet at the end of issue #3.
