Siege (Bendis/Coipel)

Nothing in the 3 issues so far has even come close to resembling a siege.

It's like how Secret Invasion was just a giant fist fight.

It's going to be Carnage. Look closely at the Void's hands and feet... Than his mouth (those aren't teeth its the symbiote goo dripping from one lip to the other). Look at how the Void is depicted in Dark Avengers. The Sentry's first move coming back was ripping carnage in half and i bet some symbiote latched on and infected him.

Then Thor hits the Captain America shield with his hammer which creates the sonic blast that allows Bob to take control again so he can leave the solar system forever and join up with the cosmic half of the marvel universe which actually has the powerset to deal with his nonsense.

Carnage then either rejoins with Kletus or somebody else and we end with a Carnage return epilogue.

Is what I think will happen.
huh...that actually almost makes sense.

hahahahahaha!!!!!!

OMG! IT TIES ALL THE WAY BACK TO MIGHTY AVENGERS WHEN BENDIS DID THE WAR OF THE SYMBIOTES!

(He did do a story about symbiote aliens invading Earth, right?)

Dude is a genius.
Actually, it ties back into the first arc of New Avengers.

Nothing in the 3 issues so far has even come close to resembling a siege.
nothing in the 8 issues of secret invasion even came close to resembling a secret invasion.
They should have called it Blondes Gone Wild.
heh.

huh...that actually almost makes sense.

I love the theory. The biggest problem I have with it is that...that would be the payoff for this series? The return of Carnage?

nothing in the 8 issues of secret invasion even came close to resembling a secret invasion.

No arguments here. It was the complete opposite of a "secret" "invasion".

I hear the next big Marvel event will be called "Prominent Hero and Prominent Villain Gather Their Friends To Punch Each Other Amidst Occasional Snark".

Occasional snark? I guess Bendis won't be writing it then.

Man... The play-by-play commentary was excruciating. They turned poor President Obama into the guy at the theater who's loudly asking stupid questions about the movie while everyone else is trying to watch it.

Bendis is The Void!

If The Void/The Sentry turns out to have been infected by Carnage, I'd imagine it'd proceed in a similar way to what DSF suggested. And, you know, that's anti-climactic and pointless. If he really is a Biblical God/Physical manifestation of evil, we have a different problem entirely. Will Superman kill it by singing? Will Hal Jordan "stake this vampire"? There is no conceivable way for Bendis to write himself out of that one. It's impossible for Bendis' low-rent Avengers to defeat a virtually unstoppable villain sue in a satisfying way. And, you know, whatever deus ex machina he contrives will be anti-climactic and pointless.

I was actually really hoping that Bendis would subvert our expectations with Siege; everyone pretty much predicted another Marvel event comic with arbitrarily assembled groups of heroes and villains jumping at one another screaming catchphrases and buzzwords at each other. I actually considered that "the event X many years in the making" would be cerebral and tightly plotted, addressing every plotline since Avengers: Disassembled. I really thought this wouldn't just be another big superhero fight. It was stupid of me to think this.

I used to think this, but realized that is not going to happen a while ago.

I'm sure you meant this, but the operative word there is "Bendis". I'd have faith in any one of several writers to do just that, but Bendis is too lazy and unimaginative.

Shame on Joe Q for not keeping Bendis on books that suit his strength as a writer and letting him do stuff like this.

Will Superman kill it by singing?

I actually thought that was kind of cool.

Anyway, IGN has an interview with Bendis. Notable quotes follow.

Well, I look at it as everyone's motivations are pure unto themselves. He has a way he thinks the world should be. He's using everything in his bag of tricks to make that happen. So is Norman. So is Tony Stark. So is Steve Rogers. That's the thing – the problem with a character like Loki is that for years he's been written as this "bwahaha" villain, and that doesn't really say anything about the character or his relationship with his brother or father or Asgard. So we're trying to keep it there. We'll see what people think of that. I like villains who are the star of their own movie, whose opinions are clean as a whistle. You can understand it.

Seriously? I've never pictured Loki as "the hero of his own picture show". I've always pictured homeboy as a right bastard with no redeeming values and no internal delusions to that effect. I don't think giving him a twisted perception of helping his people really adds any depth to the character. If Loki gets all teary-eyed when he sees Asgard collapse, I'm just going to roll my eyes.

Yeah, this is a very interesting interpretation by Olivier Coipel. What I've liked about the Void overall is that because of the nature of it, every artist has had an original take on it. I kind of try to explain where the character is at to the artist – and sometimes only to the artist – and see what kind of incarnation they come up with. When I first saw it, I was intrigued, because that's not quite what was written. I had said this is the creepiest, worst manifestation of the Void. This is the Void unleashed. There's nothing human tethered to it like there has been in the past. And this is what he came up with. It just made me feel like Coipel had something horrible happen to him on a beach in his childhood.

But I do think it's a great, horrific image. It stands out and it's iconic. There's just something about it that you don't expect at all. So that's what's upon them and it's as Norman said: "There's nothing holding him back now." There was always someone massaging his shoulders – Hulk, Reed, Tony – there was always someone calming him down. And now that's been removed. For those watching Dark Avengers, we've seen just how far he's fallen from what was not that strong of a foundation to begin with.

So, I'd guess that means the Carnage angle is unlikely. My guess is, the Void is just being the Void and doing what the Void (apparently?) does. Which is, I guess, **** **** up?

Just to clarify, I love Final Crisis. It's my favorite event comic ever. And I was totally okay with Superman killing Darkseid with music (or the antithesis of his vibrational frequency, as it were). I was just using it as a throwaway example to demonstrate that Bendis cannot conceivably write himself out of this. An alien Demigod with a machine that can do literally anything allows for a much different sort of antagonist than a guy with a discus painted like a flag who happens to work out a lot.

So they beat the sentry/void by
punching him really hard
. Huh.

And here I thought this would get interesting.

Double post to avoid the ad. I didn't make this, but it conveys my feelings about siege perfectly.

They did get powered up by the Norm Stones, so it wasn't just punching.

I really dislike how Bendis writes Loki.

I was also incredibly disappointed to see him kill off Loki and give him an inexplicable heroic turn, especially after that great one shot Kieron Gillen did.

Hmm. I didn't think that was too bad. Especially for Bendis.

I would've liked to have seen the Norn stones become more of a permanent thing. I think it would've made this "heroic age" more interesting if the heroes were dealing with newly enhanced powers.
