Resident Evil (video game series)

I bought degeneration the other day on DVD. I liked it a lot. Much better than the live action movies. Very exciting, fast paced action-horror. It does tie into the games, especially RE2 and RE4 (considering two of the three main characters, who would have guessed?). I strongly recommend it to any and all fans of the series.

I hated the degeneration movie so bad. It's the only movie this year I've given 1 out of 5 too. There was way too many clichés. I'm shocked I actually prefer the live action movies. The friend I watched it with (who loves all things RE) said it was crap as well.

But that's just us. Some may like it.

I thought it was great, honestly. Felt like a direct sequel to RE2. And it explained how terrorists got a hold of the T virus after Umbrella fell.

I agree it was very heavy on the zombie/horror movie cliches, but despite that it was still great. And honestly, name a horror or more specifically a zombie film/game/etc which didn't feature more than a few of those same cliches.

That said, I very much enjoyed it.

Agreed. It was a lot of fun. Nice action, great CGI (for a Direct to DVD film anyway), and a worthy chapter to the RE saga.

Also loved that they got the same voice actor from RE4 for Leon.

Another plus was the fact that this movie serves as an interquel (RE 4.5) between the 4th and the upcoming 5th game, setting up the new Pharmaceutical giant Tricell.

And that's cool. I expected some but it had way too many. It distracted from the film from laughing at them. E.g how many times did they escape on 1 second during a countdown? But I know others would probably like it so that's cool.

But thats sort of the point. Its exactly RE for those cliches, zombie/horror or action genre. It works well in the video games, and this movie was intended to echo that. If you enjoyed the RE games, I can't see how you wouldn't like this movie. If you aren't a fan of the RE games, it would make sense you might not like this. And if you ARE a fan of the games and didn't like this movie, well, that I just don't get. What else were you expecting?

The live action RE movies weren't Resident Evil at all.

No but there should be a middle ground. Just because games have it doesn't mean film should. As it forgiveable having a few in games as it's split up by a hours of gameplay. Too many in a 2 hour film is not right.

I love the games just not that film. It's like I like the Mortal Kombat games but I didn't want the film to show health bars or in the resident evil films I don't expect them use a plant they find in the corner of the room.

Sure a couple of clichés is expected but I felt it just had too many in the space of the film and sometimes the same ones over and over and over again. I wanted a resident evil film that was both a good movie and in keeping with games tones. I was disappointed completely with what we got. I expected live action ones to let me down but not that one and when it did and how I'd rather watch the live action films as films as they are better movies.

I might be explaining it wrong i'm not sure.

No, I completely get where you're coming from. As I said, I think the cliches hurt the movie itself, but I was entertained regardless. Still, it was definitely RE in tone, and I was very satisfied with it overall. It was a far worthier effort than any of the three live action RE movies. I hope to see further RE movies in this fashion. Hopefully, possible sequels will learn from the mistakes of this one.

That's fair enough.

If they did a sequel I would watch even though I didn't enjoy the film in hopes they do learn from it.

If the live action movies took the same atmosphere of Degeneration and cut down the cliches and improved the acting, it would have been a pretty good way to honor the franchise. Now, it's just a "bad girl" action flick franchise which just happens to have zombies and currently a post-apocalyptic scenario.

A new Resident Evil could be coming to the Wii hot on the heels of the soon to be released fifth instalment in the all-conquering it's-not-really-survival-horror-any-more-but-we'll-call-it-that-anyway series, with Capcom believed to be making an announcement on March 12.

Speaking at a recent press event in Toronto, Capcom's Associate Product Marketing Manager Matt Dahlgren told Joystiq that "...Nintendo Wii fans will be very happy very soon." Joystiq's since gone one further and is rumouring that the game will be a Wii-make of Resident Evil: Code Veronica, the Dreamcast instalment that remains a firm fan favourite and earned a hearty 9.2 back in 2000.
