Rebuild of Evangelion (spoilers)

Re: You Are (Not) Alone

The film became a ****ing mess.

Never leave the fate of the world in the hands of horny teenage sex starved boys.
That was kinda the point of the series. In addition to being a massive mind**** it's also a deconstruction of the giant mecha genre of anime. Where people consistently leave the fate of the world in the hands of a psychologically damaged teenager. Gundam being the most prominent example.

NGE shows just how badly that would really end.

Give this man a prize. That is the most succinct description of NGE and the giant mecha genre ever.

I have to admit, that's one of the reasons why I never got into Code Geass, LeDouche just seemed like an even whinier Shinji Ikari.

That makes sense

You know I've seen just about all of Code Geass and from what little I've seen of Shinji I have to disagree. LeLouche was more, "My mother was assassinated, during which my sister was crippled and lost her sight from the trauma. So, I'm gonna save the world from an oppressive and racist dictatorship even if I have take over the whole damn world to do it". While Shinji seemed more "Daddy didn't love me, one girl acts mean and hateful to me; while the other girl, who I may have a chance with, is a clone of my mom. I hate myself and shouldn't exist, whine, whine, *****, *****, insert self-hating emo song"

Though the term "LeDouche" does fit nicely.

They both complain a lot, but there is one important difference. Lelouch is proactive. He builds the Black Knights from the bottom up and tries to destroy the most powerful nation on Earth. When he complained I never got annoyed because I knew he would try to do something about whatever injustice he felt had been perpetrated.

Shinji on the other hand is so incredibly passive. He has every situation, even the ending, forced on him. He never does anything but react or in some cases have a mental breakdown and fail to react to the world around him. I disliked Shinji the first time I saw Eva, but the second time through I really tried to empathize with the character and I enjoyed the whole show on another level.

There are similarities, but I think there are also some serious differences in the characterizations of those two. I will, however, admit to being biased. I love Lelouch for being such a Large Ham.

Actually, to be honest, I think it is the Large Hamness that bothers me. Well, that and Lelouch is a bit of a powergamer's wet dream. I think I have a little more compassion for Shinji and Asuka because I lost a parent as a kid too, and I've been through both phases of depression. When i was Shinji's age i was pretty much girlShinji, down to the massive amounts of self-loathing and passiveness. Then in college, I had my angry Asuka phase.

Shinji is such a damsel in distress sometimes I'm surprised he hasn't been kidnapped by Bowser.

Well, I just watched a fansub of 1.0 and I have to say I was impressed by how successful they were in adapting and distilling the early part of the series to a movie format. I'll definitely check out 2.0 when the fansubs hit the net.

Ah. Well, to each their own.

That's understandable. I can't even imagine losing a parent, but I went through some depression as a teenager and I think it had the opposite reaction for me. Shinji's meekness drove me nuts, but Asuka's unfocused anger and determination to prove herself immediately worked for angry teenage McCheese.

I haven't really thought of it like that, but right there is the problem with the ending, Shinji Asuka didn't evolve as characters. Sure in the last scene Shinji tries to do harm against Asuka, who shows a sign of compasion. But that is immediately undone when Shinji starts crying and Asuka says "disgustin". It feels like there was no point to the whole thing. That along with with them being stuck in a post apocalyptic landscape where the ocean is red like blood makes it really a downer.

So while I was looking on wikipedia I realized I've seen a apart of the last episode, I was sure I've never seen the show. It was when Shinji was theorizing about the nature of reality and how other things in exists define his form. It then cuts to Asuka waking Shinji up for school only to notice his mourning wood. I just figured it was the first episode to a show I;ve never heard of before. But I thought going from a dream exploring the metaphysics of existence to a penis joke was a brilliant opening for a show.

I will be checking out these movies when I get a chance.

Re: You Are (Not) Alone (spoilers for NGE)

All I can think of to add is that I'd like to see a Code Geass AMV set to the Larry-Boy theme song.

Oh, and to this:

Re: You Are (Not) Alone (spoilers for NGE)

Okay, I've almost got all of the Platinum DVD editions of the series. What do I get next? My library has something called Death and Rebirth and something else called Genesis Reborn which I believe are both retellings of the final episodes... are they recommended once I've watched the series?

I would watch the TV series first, then Genesis Reborn (which is technically a director's cut of the last 2 episodes of the series). Then Death & Rebirth. Then End of Evangelion if you can find it.

But don't try and watch them in one sitting. You'll end up killing yourself.

Re: You Are (Not) Alone (spoilers for NGE)

I tried that once with Berserk. Started at 10am and finished around 4am. You can only fathom what kind of anger that seeps in one's sleep deprived mind after realizing, "this is how it ends?"

Re: You Are (Not) Alone (spoilers for NGE)

I watched Vol. 2 last night. It ended with Shinji getting an erection in the water after hearing the girls on the other side interacting with each other...

Vol. 3 tonight!
