When I posted in this thread it was after having read the first arc of the Icon volume (and mercifully unloading the issues on TOG).
I decided to give the first volume (Image) a try. I'm about 9 issues in - it really isn't that bad. There's nothing groundbreaking about it and Bendis's hyper-annoying speech patterns and tics are even MORE annoying than usual (seriously - even when the story seems kind of good I want to chuck the book out the window because it's so annoying to read). But I like the concept. Hopefully it will pic up the pace and get less annoying, but I doubt it.
