That was the creepiest thing I've read in a long time and it stayed with me long after. It's kind of terrifying really.
We doomed ourselves by reading the comic. Same way we doom ourselves when we read any comic, watch TV, etc. We waste our lives on this stuff and become part of the machine and only exacerbate the situation by reading more. Instead of being productive we consume comics while it consumes our lives. That's my guess anyway.
