Morrison's New X-Men or Whedon's Astonishing X-Men?

Which X-Men run do you prefer?

Me too. I liked Ramos on Wolverine, but he didn't seem to fit on X-Men. Bachalo did, however.

I like the idea of Magneto being Xorn, but it wasn't done very well. When rereading the series, I noticed a couple of points that made it seem quite inconsistent, even though Morrison supposedly knew Xorn was Magneto since the beginning. I think I listed a couple in the discussion thread.

But I can accept Magneto being Xorn because the idea of there being another Xorn who looks like Magneto and is a brother of someone is ridiculous and stupid and the reason why Morrison will not work for Marvel.

Agreed. I felt like a lot of the New X-Men run was fairly inconsistent. Although, in theory, I like the idea of Magneto being Xorn, it was executed rather haphazardly. But the idea was great: Magneto hijacking the Institute from the inside was a wonderful idea. And the "dark future" book-ended at the end of his run didn't seem necessary. I understand he was trying to tie together Beast's insecurities with John Sublime, but.... eh...

OTOH, I think there was just too much good stuff packed into his run to not like it. Cassandra Nova, secondary mutation, John Sublime, the evolution of Emma Frost as a character (which Whedon did well, but Morrison pioneered). Hell, the origins of Weapon X were maybe the greatest part of the book.

I do agree that Whedon did a pretty fine job of growing the continuity that was established in New X-Men. I hope Astonishing stays fairly separate from the rest of the X-Universe when Ellis takes over, with its own encapsulated continuity.

We've seen the origins of Weapon X a hundred times, always with a new dark secret added to it, I thought it was completely unnecessary to do that again.

But Fantomax is a great character.

Eh, I loved The World. Hell, I'm using it as a base for a fancomic.

You see, I think that's where we differ. For the most part, I don't care what's been done before, because everything has been done. Hell, "The Cure" has definitely been done before, and it was one of the better parts of Whedon's run.

What matters is the quality of how it's being told, and New X-Men's Weapon X origin was definitive.

I don't really care that they repeat stories, but regardless of quality, if I've seen it too many times before it's just going to be boring to me. It's the main reason I'm so anti-origins in super-hero movies.

You don't necessarily have to show me something new, but don't show me a cliche.

While I agree that the Magneto tripping out on Kick was over the top. Especially if you consider that a Holocaust survivor putting people in crematorians. I do think that Magneto would go to the lengths to infiltrate the X-Men and undermine them from within.

While I tend to dislike Wolverine stories I thought Assault on Weapon Plus was a great story. The fact that Wolverine was the tenth subject of the program instead of the subject.

All in all I thought that the negatives in the New X-Men run (and they were there) were completely overshadowed by the positives. After eradicating 16 million mutants with a wild sentinel in Genosha, Cassandra Nova switching bodies with Xavier, who is revealed to be his twin sister that died in a battle before they were born, and then using this it as a means to take over the Shi'ar Empire to use against the X-Men. The introduction of John Sublime being an ancient organism trying to undermine the human race for millenia and using Kid Omega and the Weapon Plus facility to take care of the mutants. And of course anything involving Xorn was completely absolutly great. Especially when he was revealed as "healing" others through the control of nano-sentinels in their blood stream. I just think that New X-Men was the absolute X-Men story.
 
I also think New X-men was better.

New X-men was something new and very different to anything before. It was more focused on mutants and their mutations, and how it tied to the rest of the world. I also loved that every arc was a new spin on some of the major X-men arcs. The Sentinel arc, the Shiar arc, Wolverine arc, Magneto arc, and even a apocalyptic future arc. The "Here Comes Tomorrow" arc is still my favorite arc.


While Astonishing was more straight base epic superhero action. Colossus's return is still one of the best scene in comics.


Now these are the two best X-men runs ever. But I do hate when everyone says that the X-men suck. They have had lots of very bad stories and can be very convulted. But the X-men can be good.

Carey & Brubaker have both done very good jobs. Legacy is awesome.


I also fell in love with the other New X-men after the Magik arc. They should not of canceled that. Damn Young X-men.

Heh, I actually fell in love with the new New X-Men because of the Quest for Magik.

I prefer New X-Men. Cassandra Nova, the new students (Beak, Stepford Cuckoos, Quentin Quire), secondary mutations (feline Beast and diamond Emma Frost), Sublime, Xorn, Fantomex, Weapon Plus, darker, more assertive Cyclops....I even enjoyed Morrison's wrap-up arc, Here Comes Tomorrow.

It's a shame that none of the elements of Morrison's run were translated onto film for X2 or X3 (NXM itself was inspired by the first movie). Really, New X-Men is almost like an "Ultimate" spin on the X-Men, only more innovative and, well, better all-around.

As for Astonishing, it was great....I was glad to see Colossus return, and it introduced some pretty cool characters. Cyclops is cooler, and the art is better IMO.

I'm amazed New X-Men is wining so much. Wasn't a close choice for me...

I'm going to have to agree on this. Has anyone tried to read these concurrently to see if it syncs well when reading? I don't know if that makes any sense.

This decision is really hard for me. i can't decide.
