It was said so because as the programs starts out in its baby phase, they're "testing" this out with old/somewhat old comics to see how things goes.

I was particularly interested in Proj's take on it, know that he operates pretty much the same way I do.

I know. The ******** thing was much bigger than people realize, I think.

There are substitutes, (which cannot be named) but they are very, very poor comparatively.

Sorry, short memory. I even made a comment about it.

Anyway, that sucks. I hope they do move to that eventually. I would be more than happy to pay $5/mo for that. And, like I said, buy the trades as well.

I get what they are doing and of course it makes sense for them, in a way. But there are a LOT of people who do things the same way I do. Comic torrents are NOT like movie or music torrents. I do believe that people still buy comics they like. Not offering NEW comics and shutting down the tracker in question is a huge mistake.

I do agree with everything you had mentioned. The whole zooming thing has put me off from even reading the comics they have up for free. It's a damn pain.

I wouldn't mind either paying to read some online, but they way they have it set up is just awful.

Also, I do wish they'd get new comics. But I understand how they're starting the way they are with what they have, like I said, to test their new experiment out. I mean, people will check it out. So hopefully they'll update with new comics soon.

Like maybe whatever comics are out this week will be available either the same day or the next. That doesn't sound bad, really.

I download single issues to keep up with discussion and then buy trades of story arcs that are good.

I would not pay for single issues and then pay for trades; I can't afford that.

If anything, I'd say these torrent sites where comics are uploaded are only helping the industry. They get people like me checking out new comics every day, and if they're good, I'm sure most people buy the trade so they can reread it over and over.

I don't know. I just won't be using Marvel's system.

I changed that quote - I meant to get Proj's take on it because I know he downloads a lot too and then buys trades...not that I don't care what you say.

I do understand that they can't just put EVERYTHING out there and that it might be in their best interests to roll things out in phases...but for the reasons I mentioned, it makes more sense to start with NEW comics that people can't get in any other form other than ridiculously overpriced $3-4 single issues rather than books that are often found in multiple collections that are constantly reprinted. If the intent is to combat the downloading of comics, give people what they want. The download numbers on the torrents for new books are always WAY higher than collections of older books.

I totally agree. Like I said, downloading comics is NOT the same as downloading music or movies.

Just to expand on this - comics are a very time-oriented medium. It is absolutely in Marvel's best interest to offer new books at a GREATLY discounted price (it costs a lot of money to print and ship books; digital downloads eliminate that) in order to keep fans interested constantly and up-to-date on books they like. It is far, far, FAR too easy to fall behind on a book and lose interest, and therefore stop buying it.

I couldn't agree more.

Maybe what they could've done was have some old comics, for the ones who enjoy/want to check out the classics and what not, but also have some recent issues up, too. Like say comics from a month or two ago. Something like that.

Yes - I agree. Spotlight it. Focus on it, then pump it full of ads for whatever collection it is currently in.

There needs to be like an iComics or something that allows you to download recently released issues like a day after they're published and search for older collections...
 
The (in)famous tracker I mentioned (which cannot be named or linked to here) went back online a day after taking itself offline. But yesterday they announced that Marvel followed procedure for removing comics from their trackers.

I'm sure that another "central" comics tracker will spring up, but right now - nuthin'.

Marvel is making a huge mistake with the timing on this. It makes perfect sense for them to not want to have their comics being freely distributed but people are using those downloads to make decisions on which books they purchase because they're tired of getting hosed on $5 per issue for crappy books. Right now Marvel is taking this away without providing an alternative.

Unless another tracker pops up soon, I predict Marvel will actually lose money because of this.

You guys should be following this. Precedents are being set here that can have MAJOR effects on comics distribution. This is one of the most important news stories to hit comics in a long time.
