I'm kind of afraid they'll do the Deadpool & Wolverine thing, where they're the same actors but with a (slightly) different history.

To me, that makes no sense, because the emotional pay-off is from these being the same characters we know and love, but I'm unsure if that's what's going to happen

I think the casting announcement shows actors in the order of their appearance in the script, despite it not making much sense but still

especially considering the lack of cohesion between all of the original fox x-men films as it stands, i really wouldnt mind if they all just "somehow return" lol

See... here's my take on that.

You're right to an extent, but I honestly feel like the X-Men films have perfectly acceptable continuity. There's, like, five things that are legitimate issues, maybe less, and the rest is just confusion over timelines and actors. "How did Xavier came back to life", "how does Magneto have his powers again", "how are there two Emma Frosts", etc. That's all explicitly shown in the films, directly implied or confirmed BTS. "Oh no, the new actors play the present day characters in 2018" as if Edward Norton's face didn't magically morph into Mark Ruffalo, like give it a break, it's just a gag.

People asking how Mystique is alive in the original film when she died in 1992 legitimately annoys me, considering how if they watched them in release or chronological order it makes perfect sense... although now we might have to ask the same question except for Avengers: Doomsday.
 
There are a few legitimate issues, like double Deadpools or 19 year old prepubescent Jean Gray. It's just that, overall, a lot of the confusion is unnecessary. A lot of people still think Jean died in Dark Phoenix despite the film showing the Phoenix force flying in the sky after she had an ending monologue.

We know when every movie is set. We know which timeline they belong to. Are the timelines really that confusing, Mr. Deadpool?

yea i was mainly referring to those few things that just dont line up (like charles saying he met magneto when they were teenagers), i see a lot more unnecessary added confusion among a lot of fans tho lol

Cyclops would also be in High School in 1979 via X-Men Origins: Wolverine, but I guess he could be 14 by that point and skipped a grade at some point.

There's a theory that Charles might have been misremembering his past as an early sign of dementia.
