I don't see the island as manipulating anyone for it's own purposes. I think the island helps people realize things about themselves.
It's hard to understand why the black cloud kills some people, but lets others live. I assume it has to do with how it views each person on a moral level. I look back to the first season when Locke stood his ground against the black cloud(before we knew what it was) and it didn't kill him. There's no simple answer for
If I had to guess why the black cloud killed Eko, I would say it's because Eko was ready to die. Eko's last unresolved issue was his brother, and he resolved that.
I think if I wanted anyone to survive the rest of the season Eko would be pretty high on the list. There was just so much that could be done with his character.
