My friends and I are endlessly fascinated with the fact that the word "porque" means both "because" and "why".

Frequent exchange between us:

I think this constitutes a second language.

I took 2 years of Spanish in high school. I remember a good deal of it, but have forgotten enough to no longer be able to hold even a basic conversation. I just remember words.

I took a year of French, which I loved, but have forgotten pretty much all of it.

I speak Filipino/Tagalog.

Which is foreign enough, I guess, for all you Yanks.

I also took a bit of German but couldn't speak it conversationally.

And in high school they made us learn some Latin.

It is easier to type, since you don't have to answer someone quickly, sometimes I forget some words and I kinda "freeze" when talking. I'm training so that I don't do that much.

That disappears with practice. I found you sort of just learn to talk around the words you can't remember.

I'm a good bit past conversational in danish, but only in certain areas. That also lets me pass as pseudo-fluet in Swedish and Norwegian. I've got a smattering of words in French, Russian, German, Italian, Spanish, Japanese, Pidgin (which is technically a dialect but whatever) but I couldn't hold a conversation in any of them except maybe pidgin. I can piece together the meanings of some text though.
