You know what else is killing me? Nanny Diaries. I know that movie'll make bank.
From your descriptions and my own experience, it seems like it hasn't been a very good week to invest in movies. I think part of the problem is that there really is a lot of uncertainty over the coming season. Let's take a look at some of the movies:
* TMNT is ostensibly a good gamble because we're talking about a PG-rated action/adventure CGI film that could draw in a varied crowd, but could fall on its face when only the fans show up.
* Last Mimzy's appeal seems vague and unspecified. I don't know what they're doing with this film. It's not that I'm dismissing it as a bad film, it's just that it's commercial angle is really unclear.
* With The Reaping, we have a fairly plain-sounding Biblical horror tale that has the appeal of something like
Stigmata or
The Omen. But Hilary Swank hasn't had a hit in years, and films like these usually have difficult times at the box office.
* The Nanny Diaries is something that could work or could not work in the box office. It's being played up as a romantic comedy between Chris Evans and Scarlett Johansson, both 'beautiful people' but the actual story from the book seems difficult to sell as a 'must-see' movie experience.
Anyway, I'm having a terrible time at the movies as well. The only profit I'm scoring right now is with
Wanted. The focused totality of films like
Reign Over Me,
Shooter and
Paprika are killing me.
All my profits are from starbonds. I've got most of my profits from Nicky Katt and Amy Poehler right now. So far, I'm up by 29k today.
