DC Universe Online

Nice. Nice. Seems like you're not all that limited in terms of your abilities either. I wonder what a character like Batman would be like since he's got no powers... Less fun to play? Hmm... I guess it would depend.

I think technology would stand in for super-hero "powers" in Batman's (and similar characters) case. I also think Batman-like characters are heavy on the brawling/fighting aspects.

I think this too

That's how they did it in City of Heroes, I think.

Yeah I think so. I remember technology been mentioned but I never made powerless one.

However on this I think more work will be done to it as Batman is one of if not DC's main hero now. So they'll know people want to be like him. Maybe they'll even incorporate cars and planes ect.. to travel around it for them like Star wars Galaxies had spaceships and Landspeeders and was made by sony online who's making this.

So you could say "Quick to the Gothamite-mobile"

The vehicle thing would be very cool, but I doubt we'll see that. Vehicles/spaceships were a much more intrinsic part of the Star Wars universe than they are of the DC universe (despite the Batmobile). The DC universe is more about super-heroes duking it out...which is what this game will be. Plus, being that there hasn't been any mention of vehicles yet I don't think we'll see it. Its possible they could release them in a downloadable patch or something, but I think that might involve too much in terms of rewriting code to implement them in the existing code and have it all work seamlessly in just a patch. Maybe in DC Universe Online 2?

yeah you maybe right. I was thinking they already have working cars and traffic e.g We saw someone grab a bus. That making some user controlled ones may work. But you are right it's unlikely

Thats a whole different animal then climbing into the cars or trucks in the game and operating them (driving around, etc), especially in relation to how they interact with the existing stuff (the heroes, structures, other cars, etc). Thats where they'd have to design an entire extra element for the game and work it into the existing code for a Grand Theft Auto type result. But I don't think it was worth the required work if talked about during development...like I said, this game's focusing on the super-hero battle and mission thing, which makes sense.

That is true also.

I was thinking they might have them and say Auto-pilot for people who can't just super speed across the city to meet friends or to do mission. But I do agree with you.

You see that's just it.

There are definitely going to be options in this game for the creation of powerless superheroes. That Auto-Pilot thing just doesn't sit well for me and the last thing I want to see is a load of costumed adventurers with jet-boots or something.

Put vehicles in, god damnit.

See I mentioned Galaxies as landspeeders in that game you could drive but if was way too far and you didn't care much you could make it drive you there

Does anyone know about the environments in this game? Is it more like Warcraft, where I can walk between Gotham and Metropolis or will it be like Phantasy Star where there is sort of a hub and you teleport into your mission?

The only hero who uses a vehicle regularly that I can think of is Batman. I'm not very familiar with DC comics, so maybe I'm missing some people. But seriously, its a super hero game. Most super-heroes don't need a vehicle because they're capable of matching the same speeds and distances covered with their powers alone, Superman's flight, Flash's super-speed, etc. For those without super-powers, a zip-line (like Batman's) for swinging around the city works just as well.

Seriously, vehicles would be ALMOST pointless in this game. They'd be like the TV watching and internet surfing in GTA4...pointlessly extraneous additions. Yeah, it might be cool to drive around Metropolis or Gotham, but not as cool as flying around or running around with super-speed.

Yeah. I could see it being in an expansion that focused on powerless superheroes, but it feels extraneous for the core game.

And you missed Blue Beetle. :( I want to play Blue Beetle.

Like I said, I'll be the first to admit ignorance of the DC universe proper. But really, how much is riding around on a Harley or whatever the hell Blue Beetle does in terms of transportation going to add to the gameplay element of kicking the *** of super-heroes and villains?

Yeah...I would like to see them find a way to implement vehicles in limited form, but thats mostly just due to an overwhelming urge to drive the Batmobile (even if its only in the video game). I once tried to steal the Batmobile from Universal Studios...but I was thrown off by the fact that it didn't have any door handles or locks.

It won't. But it will add a means for non-powered heroes to get to the *** kicking action faster. That is very important as how else can they do it?

Grapple hook too roof? zip-line? Swing on Grapple hook? What would they add to the *** kicking part? Nothing. They will be slower and let the people down.

While say a car would fill the following

- Take them where they need to go fast
- Add more customisation
- If it has wepaons it can help them out
- Add fun gameplay for travelling as super speed and flight does.

He gets around in a flying airship called The Bug.... in the shape of a giant bug.

That alone is worth the price of admission.

So that was why I had such a hard time getting into DC comics as a kid...well, that and all the 80's styling. You see, despite the fact that I was growing up in the 80's, I was so ahead of my time at that point I realized how over the 80's really were. However, I wasn't ahead of my time enough to realize that the 80's would encounter a resurgance in the present time. Irony expressed through the passage of time escaped me then, too. :(

Hah. That's the thing. I only caught the tail end of the eighties, and I was but a wee thing then, but none of that stuff really worked for me. A lot of it still doesn't but some of it's grown on me. The Question is absolutely magnificent, and Justice League International is also great... but I find myself not being able to read those books at the same pace as other stories, just because the art is still pretty off-putting to me.
