Captain America Vol. 5 by Ed Brubaker discussion (SPOILERS!)

#41

Something screwy going on with Faustus telling Sharon she lost the baby. Obviously if it was still there and she "forgot" about it there would be some craziness later, but I wonder if maybe he took it or something? Growing it artificially outside of the womb?

Faustus has some cajones to betray Skull then turn around and go right to the debate where the Senator was going to get shot.

I totally want Fautus' beard.

And now it's gone.

Re: Captain America series discussion (SPOILERS!)

This book rocks.

Trying to track down previous trades.

It's such a shame that Steve is going to inevitably get resurrected.

Did you look for the Omnibus? I think it's still in print.

And now he's like the biggest fan.

I know. But in my defense it's a very slow-moving book, and to start reading the beginning of a slow-moving run is maddening.

Re: Captain America series discussion (SPOILERS!)

The book really is a slown burner.

Read an arc or 2 in one sitting and it's dramatic gold. But read an issue or 2 at a time....and you realize that nothing and everything is happening.

Re: Captain America series discussion (SPOILERS!)

The new issue was the climax issue to the entire "Death Of Captain America" arc and it was pretty intense. I need to read all 3 Acts at once.

The cliffhanger was pretty bizarre. I would also totally bang Sin.

Re: Captain America series discussion (SPOILERS!)

I did the exact same thing and it read beautifully. It's virtually epic. From Steve's death to Bucky's quest for revenge to Bucky's acceptance and virtually stepping up to his destiny all the way to owning it at the end.

But for a minute I really swore that Skull was gonna be transferred from Lukin to Sharon. But then when I saw what he had planned and realized what was going on, I was completely blown away and sad that it didn't come to fruition.

Red Skull's consciencousness transferred into the superior genetic offspring of his hated foe...only to have Zola's science age his body to prime status. Just think......

It'd be like having Red Skull in a Cap Clone body all over again, which is something Brubaker explicitly said he hated

Re: Captain America series discussion (SPOILERS!)

I just read and and was pretty blown away as well, not to mention pleasently surprised that the ending was happy, sort of.

New Red Skull is weeeeeird though.

Also, I'm so happy Steve isn't back.

Re: Captain America series discussion (SPOILERS!)

I finally read the latest issue. A lot of **** has happened. I'm just glad it's over now because I found it really hard to keep interested in it.

Red Skull in an Arnim Zola robot body is going to be weird though.

Re: Captain America series discussion (SPOILERS!)

Now that the huge epic is over, they can start moving into other storylines,

I would of liked Brubaker to try and make Batroc a little cooler. But it seems that The Winter Soldier angle is coming back.

And naked Black Widow...yum.

SKRULLS! GET OUT MY BOOKS!

I just finished reading all of this over the last week. It's really long but it feels like the first 7 or 8 volumes are just Origin story for the new Cap.

Bucky as Cap is great it's like back to basics, war hero out of time...cuz lets face it Steve had been in the present for decades now. Bucky as cap is awsome, and everything everyone says about this is correct. I think I might leave it for a while now tho and catch up a few more trades down the line.

I still need to start reading Daredevil.

It is really long; I got the first volume of Brubaker's run when it came out and ended up returning it because I couldn't get into it; nothing was happening. I love big picture stories where it all leads up to something huge at the end but I had no idea when I was reading that first volume that was the case here. I was too impatient. When the Omnibus came out it gave me a chance to go back and read everything again, and now it's probably my favorite book.

Which is the complete opposite of his Daredevil. EVERYTHING is happening in DD.

These 2 polar opposites are just good ol' fashion awesome comic reading! Everyone should be reading these.

Re: Captain America series discussion (SPOILERS!)

No comments on the Time's Arrow story? I'm a little apprehensive of bringing back ANOTHER major character from the old era from the dead but I have faith - Brubaker has not disappointed yet.

I finished #46 just now and I really like how Black Widow is used in this book.

Also, over the weekend I grabbed the Brubaker Captain America Omnibus off the shelf and read it - it's one of my favorite books that I own. I was reading Brubaker's foreword and had no idea how much he was into this book and character - he really makes it sound like this is his dream job and it shows in the writing.

Also, Steve Epting is one of my favorite artists.

I noticed something when it was talking about Winter Soldier's failed assassination attempt on Dr. Chin - it is mentioned several times that happened in 1968, and as we know Winter Soldier was taken in and out of commission periodically from 1944ish until recently.

However, reading the Omnibus I noticed that someone (Falcon I think) mentioned to Steve Rogers that he had been back in commission for about 10 years. I know that specific dates don't mean anything for the most part, especially in a long-running book like Captain America, but thought it was interesting that Cap had only been back for about 10 years whereas Bucky has been back since the early 50s. I was looking for a mistake on Brubaker's part that would contradict those two timeframes/dates but I can't think of any - almost (all?) all of Steve Rogers's flashbacks were specific events in WW2. I just thought that was cool.

Re: Captain America series discussion (SPOILERS!)

I must be the only one reading this...things seem to have slowed down since the Death of Captain America storyline ended but this is still a great book.

Bucky lets himself get captured by Dr. Chin for a number of reasons, and apparently had planned to have Namor bust in and bust him out.

Chin turns Human Torch's powers into a virus or something (?), and infects 2 of his own men with it. Then he infects Namor.

Widow finds out she's Bucky's "plan B" for breaking out.

Re: Captain America series discussion (SPOILERS!)

I'm still reading it and loving it.

I also wouldn't mind a Brubaker/Epting Black Widow book someday.

Re: Captain America series discussion (SPOILERS!)

I just can't get that excited about this comic any more. I have to force myself to read it. :(

Re: Captain America series discussion (SPOILERS!)

It's the only comic I'm reading, mainly because my school library has it so I pick one up whenever I pass by. I love it
