Brian Michael Bendis' Powers Coming To TV

According to MTV's Splash Page, Bendis confirmed at NYCC that Powers, his creator-owned series about homicide detectives in a superpowered city, is coming to TV by way of The FX Channel, after a long development hell directed towards putting the comic on the big screen.

'Powers' is in active development as a pilot at FX," Bendis told MTV. "I just handed in a draft to the network and we're getting our notes from the network as soon as this thing is over. So next week I'll get the notes, and as long as they don't involve sock puppets and some sort of orgy scene that I'm not interested in, then hopefully it will go in the right direction."

"But they're a very smart network," added Bendis. "It seems like the right place for it to be."

Also, outright Bendis hating should be taken elsewhere and this is coming from someone with a love-hate relationship with Powers.
 
I never liked powers. I think i was the anti-climactic end of Who Killed Retro Girl that tainted it for me.
 
The concept never grasp me and, as many of us remember of WW Philly a few years ago, the idea of Satan blasting taft doesn't appeal to me. (That was from Powers right?)

I always felt that adaptations of comics that are less than stellar are an opportunity to fix them or get rid of things that may or may not detract.

Think about Showtime's Dexter, which has far less mystical elements than the Jeff Lindsay novels that it is based upon.

That being said, its quite probable that although Bendis is involved, the number of artistic collaborations necessary means that we won't be seeing an entire episode of monkey sex, and that anticlimax in story resolutions might be reduced.

Also FX make really great dramas. They have a good production company. I think this show has a great chance at being really amazing, even though I have no interest

Me too.

I just didn't want to say that in my post, because my opinion on what makes the adaptation better or not is not part of the argument.

So, regardless of how bad Powers can get, it shouldn't really be a barometer of how good a series could be, even if Bendis is involved.
 
It would be interesting to see it play out.

FX would be the best choice for this type of series. Well HBO would probably be better, but for cable TV, FX would be the best choice.
 
I'm with Friday on losing interest around the end of Who Killed Retro Girl. The comic had a lot of potential, and I think given the budget, the TV show may work well. I'll give it a chance, if only out of a repayment of debt to FX for the awesomeness that was The Shield.
 
I bought the first two volumes of Powers and regretted it. The characters weren't entertaining and the plot never grabbed me.

That said, TV is free. So I'll give the show a chance.
 
I read the first arc and to say I was underwhelmed is putting it mildly. Fortunately I found some sucker to pawn them off on.

That said, I would at least check out the first issue. I didn't have any problem with the concept of the show.

I believe you mean the first episode.

I thin I would prefer an Alias mini series on HBO.

So many factors....


I only read the first trade, and was pretty entertained. Not enthralled mind you...but my interest was piqued enough to check out another trade or 2. Too bad I could never find them.

But I am wholeheartedly loyal to FX and after giving me nothing but pure enjoyment while watching The Shield, Damages, The Riches, Dirt, Sons of Anarchy and several other shows---they've earned a spot in my TV line-up and I'll give anything they put on a shot. I even gave Testees a chance.

I think it was smart of him to go with FX. Had it been on any other prime network like ABC or FOX it would've either gotten cancelled or blown off as some Heroes-wannabe.
 
I tried the first trade and didn't even get halfway through it.
 
I liked the comic well enough for as long as I read it... I think it suffered after the Image -> Icon switch... But honestly I have always thought it had the potential to be a good TV show.
