Universal Studios has announced that Alex Kurtzman and Chris Morgan will lead an effort to reboot their classic monsters from the 30's and 40's, with the intention of them existing in a Marvel-style shared cinematic universe. Here's a link from Variety with some information:

It looks like Universal plans on starting this shared universe with an upcoming movie based on 'The Mummy'. A year or so ago, there was word of a 'Van Helsing' reboot starring Tom Cruise, but there hasn't been word of it recently. If I had to guess, October's upcoming 'Dracula: Untold' may or may not feature into this cinematic universe, depending on it's box office success.

Aren't they remaking The Monster Squad? Kind of defeats the purpose doesn't it?

How so? While based off of the Universal monsters, the Monster Squad doesn't have any literal connection to it. Plus, I'm pretty sure The Monster Squad reboot has more or less stalled. I'm not seeing how the existence of a Monster Squad reboot has any effect on a series of films based on the classic Universal monsters.

The original Monster Squad sucked anyway.

I'm not continuing this conversation until you take that back. You gonna say the original Fright Night sucked too?

I haven't seen it since I was a kid, so I can't really say whether or not it sucks. I noticed it's on Netflix, but I haven't had time to watch it yet. There's no way it's worse than Monster Squad though. I know a lot of people love that movie, but I thought it was ridiculously boring when I watched. Maybe it's one of those movies that you really need to see at a young age to appreciate.

Yeah, sort of like Basic Instinct or Showgirls.
